Why I keep launching Flight

Featured Replies

Staib said:" I talked one new Icon pilot through the process of setting the Icon's comm radio frequency and then having a voice chat using Ctrl + Tab on that frequency."

Huh?

What?

Huh?

This is possible?!?!?!?

yes it is . Now you can use the comm radio like the real one . Tune a freq and to transmit on that freq you use CTRL+tab . if you use tab only you talk on the general chanel where everyone on the session can hear you ....

Immersion. That's the key word for me. Everything in Flight really pulls me into the game. The mood, the shadows, the graphics, the weather, everything! I am doing a job right now from Kahului to Ford Island. I started at dawn and it's so IMMERSIVE...! The colors you see, the haze, the atmosphere... This is why I keep on launching Flight!!! I am even beginning to like flights that are longer then 40 nm... (My current job is > 90!)

Well, now I am going back to my plane again... I usually don't interrupt flights to post something here, but I was thinking about this topic while I was immersed in the wonderful world of Flight and I just HAD to post it.

And Don, don't you dare stop posting posts like the one you did!!! :drinks:

EDIT

Seeing this coming closer and closer perfectly smooth... How can I NOT love that!

Don, perhaps you could repost your original message that you deleted? Thanks.

Hook

I will try and repost close to what I had :

What I had bascially said was that I keep finding myself flying Flight , even with some of the shortcomings like no Track IR support, which it just begs for - it would take it to a whole new level for me , I know the Flight team mentioned while nothing official they are working on it, and I do hope they still are - is it is just so dang beautiful and simple, no matter what I may be doing at the time on my desktop if I get an urge, just double click the ole Flight icon wiith no prep work , and off I go.

The graphics/scenery are amazing , and considering this is like Flight 1.0, it should just only get better. I am really looking forward to seeing what Alaska brings...

Thanks guys!

Yep, that's what I read! And that's exactly what I find in FLIGHT - ABSOLUTELY AMAZING IN SO MANY ASPECTS :-)!!!

Regardinf the TrackIR, I never had one, but I'd like to ..... I tried it once at a simulation exhibition, and it felt at the same time strange and nice...

Wow, well that was certainly not my intention and never entered my mind in any way.

Nonetheless, I have deleted the original post.

My apologies to anyone that might have saw it this way.

I will certainly stay away from sharing things like this going forward.

That sounds awesome, really need to start flying with others myself but rarely ever see others online (Though I do have multiplayer set to fly with others if available). Do I need to do more than that? Fly at certain places or times?

I like to practice taking off and landing, and also the occaisional long flight for an hour or so, trimming out the plane just right so I can do most of the long haul hands off (For the most part).

Still need to learn how to do the VOR though.

I think you quoted the wrong post...? I suppose you are talking about using the radio's for MP?

Very well said Don, and I dare to say; Alaska most probably will be great and bring lots of things to do.

please keep doing what you do

your enthusiasm for flight is exactly what this forum needs and your suggestions for any addons (TrackIR support) are done in a positive way.

I'm not a trackIR user, but if it makes more people buy Flight DLC then that can only be a good thing.

Guys - I had an interesting flight this morning...

I was on Big Island, hosting a session and watching the kids beating up the local airport at Kona (as the newbies got to grips with bending the laws of gravity in their new Icons) when I saw a virtual pilot doing a more formal circuit and approach... His tag was PILOTOARV221, so guessing he was Spanish, and a little more serious about flying, I fired off a quick 'Bienvenido a Kona' text message to him...

Turns out he was a Spaniard just testing the game for the first time. He was 'hardcore', normally flying FSX heavy metal, in a Spanish virtual airline, and initially was a bit dismissive of the 'arcadey' feel of the game, until I explained about the Maule and the RV, and then got him to set up his mic and speak on the Comms before switching to a private channel to avoid all the #####?! text messages that started popping up when we started chatting in Spanish. What a nice guy he turned out to be. With loads of questions, as he really had no idea there was ILS and VOR in the expanded game...

I had to leave my session running for lunch, but when I came back I could see he was still flying, this time testing out some missions. After that he fired me a friend request, so I would say another pilot has been hooked, and more DLC will be winging its way to Spain... :)

It seems sensible to build bridges between our flying communities...

Cheers,

Nick

Im glad I kept on trying Flight. At first I didnt think it was for me but I decided to buy the Hawaii pack and from that point I only flew the Rv6. I took it out

to Kuaia? (the island with Barking Sands) and just started flying around. I discovered the 'low and threatening' theme and its tremendous fun to fly

up just into the clouds and watch the visibilty changes that occur. Its very real.

I just flew around doing aerocaches for a while...accidentally discovering many of them. the other day I did the training missions becasue I was trying to

figure out how to do ILS and that last RV6 challenge where you completely rely on ILS is far better (and harder) than anything Ive ever seen in FSX.

I feel sorry for those that have deleted Flight after only checking it once or twice.

After the release of several aircraft without cockpits I was wondering if maybe Flight was taking a wrong direction but I think as long as they release some real aircraft with each new region then it really doesnt matter if they release things I have no use for. but I do wonder if the cockpitless planes are the only way to get to some of the aerocaches -- like high flying glider and curvature of the earth...has anyone gotten to those with the RV6? Its ceiling is around 25,000 feet and the glider record is around 33,000 feet.

but it is fun. Ill get Alaska even though I hate snow. I flew into Hana airport and just had to get out and look at the trees. They did a real good job. How did ya'll find out about Alaska anyway? is there a previews section somewhere?

I meant to fly today but I got sidetracked. I still cant get over the lighting. I dont even think I care about 'better clouds' now.

Indeed, somehow I did quote the wrong post, I meant to quote staib:

Yep - ease of immersion is great. Had a play with the 3d setting on my new gtx850 card earlier today - only got a pair of those red/cyan 'glasses' but the effect is cool (for a while anyway)...

Later had a nice night hop in the Maule, back to Big Island (from Hana to Upolu) using the local VOR as an NDB - by the time I was in the Upolu circuit a few more lads in Icons were joining in. We all landed, to have a chat, then flew on another hop up to Waimea, where I talked one new Icon pilot through the process of setting the Icon's comm radio frequency and then having a voice chat using Ctrl + Tab on that frequency.

All good fun...

...

And welcome to the Forum!

Thanks for the welcome. Been mostly flying console flight sims over the years like AeroWings on Dreamcast (Awesome, awesome game, logged a lot of hours in that) and Ace Combat (Which is very arcadey even compared to flight) and a little bit of Microsoft Flight Simulator 9 (Very little I'm afraid as my PC just couldn't handle it with decent graphics settings, Crysis and the like got nothing on flight sims).

Will do and thanks for the words of encouragement.

I am certainly keeping my fingers crossed for Track IR support sooner rather than later, as it really would bring it to a whole new level for me but am enjoying Flight for what is does currently offer.

I have logged about 96 hours in it so far, and to date what I have done is missions, challenges, and lots of jobs - I really enjoy flying the jobs in the Maule, with low and threatening weather theme. Even with this there is still more to be done, ie the aerocache hunts, and learning VOR. I plan on doing some of these here in the very near future as we wait to see what Alaska will bring us.

Hard to believe I was one of the naysayers in the beginning, no way was I going to even try Flight as I was very dissappointed with the direction MS was taking with this release. Then I found myself unexpedetdly sidelined for a few weeks and after a few days reading here on the forum after it's release, I figured what the heck I will at least see what the free product was all about for myself. Did not take long for me to purchase the rest of the islands along with the Maule.

I do appreciate everyone's kind words of encouragment!

Don B

Hi don

i was also a naysayer and tho i don't spend so much time with it at the moment (NGX)I am still looking forward to the Alaska release and will purchase it when it arrives.

I'm hoping it will include some larger jets and maybe some helis in the future, although i'm not holding my breath for that

cheers don

EDIT

That is a beautiful screenshot. If you had real-world weather you'd rarely find the cloud tops that high with weather like that. The Koolau mountains are so vivid in that screen shot, but the cloud base is typically about 1500 - 2000 feet lower than that. That shot brings back fond memories of completing cross-country flights when I earned my PPL.
