Has Anyone Ever Tried Using a Kneeboard While Driving A Car?

Featured Replies

By the time I'm done loading my sunglasses, coffee, GPS, cell phone, cables, converters and everything else into my car, just about ever piece of usable real estate has been used up, and I often end up laying my Android on my thigh while driving, so that I can easily see the caller ID, maps, whatever. If you follow my meaning, this really seems like the safest way to do things, because if I store it anywhere else, I'm going to try and look at the screen for one reason or another . . . even if just out of curiousity. And, this practice keeps leading me back to the thought about "Why not just get a kneeboard?"

What do other people do? I can't believe I'm the only person in the world who uses his smartphone while driving for one reason or another. (And I don't really need a lecture about safety and all that . . . I get it, and that would really just be a waste of your time.)

Thanks, folks!

It would be very dangerous, you can get away with it in an aeroplane because you can look and see that there is nothing ahead for 20 miles, but in a car, you can't even even be certain the road will be clear for the next 20 yards. Don't do it, you will cause an accident. And if you use a mobile phone when driving, then yes, you do need a lecture about safety - anyone who uses a mobile phone to do stuff whilst driving is putting other people at risk. Pull over and use it, or get a hands free set.

Probably not, but you're one of a rare breed that would go on a forum and admit it! Get in the car, switch off your phone and finish your coffee before you leave the house.

The World is divided into two groups. Those who say "Give me a link" and those that provide the link. WWG1WGA

Heads down is the worst thing to do when you are driving.

Agreed. I use my car's bluetooth because I have that luxury.

I do hate when guys put their heads down when flying and especially taxing. I always recommend holding the chart, checklist, etc up and at a convenient spot within the instrument or windscreen scan. I want to keep my traffic scan going when VMC and my instrument scan strong and relatively uninterrupted when IMC. Not being condescending, just my 2 cents! I know some very experienced guys that bury their darn heads in their charts on their lap. Makes for an interesting ride when IMC without autopilot, in my experience.

To be perfectly honest, you posed no real question except "what do other people do?" Here we are. I said I use my bluetooth. Someone else said "turn the phone off." Yet another said "don't go head down". Sorry us "contributors" didn't meet your standards. :Peace: Was there an actual "point" to the thread?

Buy a car mount! (also suggested by a "contributor")

When you cause a fatal collision Chuck then this posted comment might come back to haunt you when there is a coroners hearing, your attitude is terrible and you shouldn't be on the road due to your admission and lack of respect for other road users.

Driving a car and flying a plane are two different things, I wouldn't drive with a kneeboard. I don't use gadgets when driving either.

I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

Man, you sure showed that guy! I bet you feel like you made the world a better place, don't you?

Ha Ramrunner looking for a debate eh! How about we jump onto team speak and have a chat? Firstly I do make the place i live in a safer and better environment and have done for 19 years. I also am a subject matter expert on the results of using smartphones whilst driving and the results and tragedy it causes. The original poster clearly has no respect for other road users anyway if he does use a kneeboard while driving hopefully that item wont turn into a missile in the cockpit when he has a collision for not concentrating solely on the road. The end.

I suggest Chuck you think twice about posting things regarding your bloody stupid antics while driving. Your arrogance towards your admission makes me incensed with anger. I suggest before you post something like this again you consider how you would feel if a child of yours had been killed by some idiot on his phone while driving. :aggressive:

I respectfully suggest you think twice before posting something that displays your sarcasm and ignorance about something you clearly know nothing about.

Not much looking for a debate. I just wanted to point out your incredibly condescending attitude. It distracts from what you may actually want to say. I'm sure that when he read your comment, the OP simply smacked his forehead , as I did. You clearly care very strongly about the issue, and a more measured response will probably get you more of the response you're looking for. The internet needs a bit more calm injected into it.

What exactly is it that you suggest I know nothing about? Kindly note, my post had nothing to do with telephone usage while driving, merely the moralizing tone of Megs8888's post, which I found to be in poor taste. I merely want a bit more civility on the internet. Speaking of which, excellent choice of the punching emoticon.

Your words not mine as I said your debate was flawed when the grammar errors kicked in chow.
