Impressive XPX video

Featured Replies

Orbx are no doubt the top of the tree for FSX scenery, but I fly Europe destinations and so have no real need for it.

However I'll probably take the plunge when the UK stuff comes available.

Hey fellas, calm down for crying out loud, no one is making the thread into a big debate. I simply wanted to bring the Orbx scenery to the attention of guys who may not be aware it.

This is an X-Plane subforum and a topic about a video showing X-Plane scenery running in (who knew?) X-Plane. Where exactly is Orbx relevant in this case, other than to say "That's cute, but blah blah blah."? It seems like every time someone posts something new in X-Plane development, some FSX apologist has to come in here and shout it down by pointing out something FSX may or may not do better. It accomplishes about the same thing as walking into Microsoft's headquarters and obnoxiously pointing out everything MacOS does better-- that is, to ruffle feathers.

Using the same analogy, if the zealous Apple fan took a "whoa, whoa, whoa! I didn't mean anything by it!" stance at the first indication of pushback, it would be just as disingenuous as your comment.

"No matter how eloquent you are or how solidly and firm you've built your case, you will never win in an argument with an idiot, for he is too stupid to recognize his own defeat." ~Anonymous.

As the twit who started all this off, I unreservedly apologise to all. The original topic post popped up in my inbox with no-indication that it was from the X-Plane subforum (which I didn't even know I was subscribed to), so I assumed it was in the general FSX forum which is the one I follow most closely, and therefore more open to comment. I can see now why some have taken offence at the direction the thread has taken as a result of my contribution. Sorry guys.

Hi Howard,

Along with everyone else who has picked the wrong place to evangelize for another sim, this forum is for X-Plane people and X-Plane products, not FSX people and FSX products. Please do not come in here and antagonize X-Plane people. Thank you everyone for your co-operation, so that no stronger measures need be applied.

Kind regards,

Great attitude! In fact, you deserve a break today. You have a new "I love your Post" award.

Kind regards,

In my opinion this is a stunning video that does indeed show two critical things:

How far X-Plane has come, and how far it should be able to go!

Both are extremely positive and encouraging.

Kind regards,

This video is very impressive compare to what we already have, I mean very, look at the scenery and try to find any stutters....the colors are great.

I have FSX, tried Fligh, t have not tried XP-10 yet but let me tell you something, you tell me that I can buy scenery like that made by 3PD developers (- one of them) for the USA or that I can download them for free and I'am in board with XP-10, don't care how much I spent on FSX.

Seriously, everything can be added, ATC and customize AI traffic is just a bump in the road, they already have a solid base to start with, something we all wish we had in other sims.

I don't know about you guys but for me the immersion factor is the first thing I'm looking for in a sim, you look at the vid. again and you tell me if you feel immersed like this in other sim, look at the details on the ground, no slide show here, the streets are where they are suppose to be without them cutting thrue buildings, and this is all over the scenery, trees and buildings shadows on the ground without loosing perf.

0.2 M/PIXEL resolution and some places at 0.1.....I'll like to see South Florida like that....

Alain

I have downloaded all of central South Florida with g2xpl at resolution of 30 cm/pixel, it takes a while and alot of space (250 GB) or so, but you can totally do it for XPX. What doesn't work so well is the OSM data which is sparse at best. BUT I am thinking of converting the new Miami Scenery and overlaying it over my Photoscenery to see how good it can look.

Isn't it interesting that the best scenery we've seen in X-Plane 10 thusfar is based 100% on orthophotos and aerials - a concept which was reviled and shunned by Austin Meyers so much that he commissioned his "plausible world" environment.

(Shrug)

The good about the video:

  • Smooth!
  • Great looking and highly detailed. VERY Immersive!
  • The native X-Plane 10 roads and buildings provide nighttime lights, something not often seen with aerial imagery.

The "bad" about the video (Well, not the video, but the process used to create the scenery):

  • Scenery generation is dependant on structure and building data in OpenStreetMap, which is very rare in the USA.
  • It's also dependant on super-high resolution seamless aerial imagery, which becomes a licensing issue in many parts of the world.
  • Scenery of that detail comes at a serious use of drive space. The resolution would undoubtedly need to get ratched down for broad areas of use.

It's a glorious technology demonstration no doubt, and if you live in the areas it will cover you are probably wetting your pants to get your hands on the scenery!

I have the same attitude about this demonstration as I do about Orbx (and the much maligned MS Flight for that matter) - it does me no good if the scenery covers a place which I don't fly. Until such detail comes to my preferred airspace, they are all about as useless to me as the Grand Tetons on a bull.

Reading behind the marketing justifications, the real reasons Austin reviled the orthophoto scenery, are the very same reasons you gave for the "bad" about the video/photoscenery.

So actually it's no surprise that the best scenery we see is photoscenery, and yet it would not make sense (for at least another decade and more from now) for the whole world to have photoscenery instead of the "plausible world" concept. And yes, the plausible world in X-Plane needs to be improved.

I would like to see the result of that, it's exiting.

If somebody can make Florida looking like Poland I'm in....I'll buy a 1.2TB SSD if I have to.

Let's be fair, as a showcase for XPX this is brilliant, and the type of video that would make one at least want to try XPX. I think It will be in a great place in 3-4 years time. If Orbx started development for XPX, that would be the jackpot win that really would tip the scales for XPX . - eventually.

But for now, there are still too many exciting things happening for FSXP3D - and I am a long time believer in it.

Heuuu! this video is showing what's going on as of today, not in 3 to 5 years, you can buy this scenery already....granted it's only Poland I'm sure that who ever does the USA like that will make a killing for XP-10 users, I understand ATC and AI need improvements but what sim does not and to be fair to XP-10 this sim as stuff that older sims don't and wish they had.

Like I said before, for me the immersion factor is what I'm looking for, buildings and streets placement is a killer in the OP vid if you'r looking for immersion, no roads cuttings thrue tiles or buildings.

If you need to see something else as exciting as the OP vid. about the old FSX read this... http://forum.avsim.n...imental-shader/ this Steve guy did more to improve FSX in less than a month compare to others did in 6 months working on Prepar3D.....and it's in DX10....I will not be surprised to see Devs. making patches for their DX9 scenery making them fully DX10 compatible....if you build it they will come.

I know it's available today, but its....Poland. And one small country does not a sim make. So, as with FSX - which wasn't exactly 'awesome stuff' in the first 1-2 years of its existence either, until SP2 and hardware were able to deal with the Performance bugs. And it took quite a while - at least 2-3 years before many switched over from FS9 when 3PD finally started hitting the virtual shelves.
