July 19, 201213 yr Hi Guys, I know it’s only July right now but I am expecting to get a new dedicated computer to run FSX only sometime in October (saving right now). I was wondering if anyone has run the pre release versions of FSX in Windows 8? Currently the wisdom seems to be that Win 7 64 bit is the best OS to run FSX. I am worried that Windows 8 might have issues with FSX and Win7 copies may disappear once it is released in October? It might be prudent to get a copy now. Yes I know software release dates often slip – but for now lets assume Win 8 will be released as announced. Any general advice on Windows 8 and FSX? Has anyone run FSX on the pre release version? Cheers all feedback appreciated. Thanks
July 19, 201213 yr Windows 8 is a new kernel and not NT... So, there is legitimate "worry" that Windows 7 might be the last OS for FSX. I tried the pre-release version... And IMO it was awful; MS trying to outdo iOS and Android, but failing miserably... But did not try it with FSX. Namely because a lot of the video and sound drivers for my hardware didn't even exist, so any performance, good or bad, would be suspect anyway. FS Blog -- http://www.flightsim...y.blogspot.com/
July 19, 201213 yr you still can buy new winXP CDs so i doubt that you will have problems bying win7 long after win8 got released. that being said, personally i would not jump on the win8 bandwagon anytime soon. i would plan a new computer specifically around win7 64bit and FSX. you can be sure to have all the latest drivers and compatibility with a win 7 system and frankly i don't think win8 will be any good as a "powerhorse" desktop OS (especially with software like FSX).
July 19, 201213 yr I installed FSX on the CP and RP and didn't see any issues. AFAICT, Win 8 is just Win 7 with the start menu reworked into a "page". Yes, there are "metro " apps planned, but just win key + d into the desktop and all is well. scott s. .
July 19, 201213 yr Author Thanks guys, I guess the broader point is stick to Win7 64 bit. Win 7 should remain available for a while and if I really wanted to upgrade I could do so later – though I would prefer just paying for the OS only once. Scott if you were able to run FSX on Win8 and going by what you are saying – it doesn’t seem to have changed that much under the hood – more about refinement and usability, interface without impacting backward compatibility. Sounds more like a skin change. Kinda like Win7 which always felt like Vista SP3 – a much more refined Vista experience. Which is good, because in case a new sim came out say P3D v2 and wasn't compatible with previous windows releases, I could still run FSX on Win8 while enjoying the new ones too.
July 19, 201213 yr win 7 runs just fine with FSX. FSX is an old program and some problems might be expected IMO. I plan for next year a hardware upgrade too but i will keep W7 for a long time as i did with XP many years ago skipping the awful Vista.
July 20, 201213 yr I only switched to Win7 about 18 month ago, was running XP until then with no problems, and still run XP on other machines with zero issues. Vista was never allowed near any of my machines.
July 21, 201213 yr I've been tinkering around with Win8 64Bit on my machine. Honestly, I have to say that I love it. I have used just about all of the OSes around and quite frankly, Win8 really hits the spot for me. Although, I haven't gotten around to installing FSX into Win8. - I doubt that we will have any issues. Win8 is mainly cosmetic changes +[some code improvements for system resources] and nearly all programs compatible with Win7 should work flawlessly in the Win8 atmosphere.
July 23, 201213 yr Hi, I agree with Ben. I love Windows 8 and cant wait for it to get released in October. Infact I have just bought a Force 3 120GB to compliment my Windows 8 reinstall :). Apparently it works wonders with FRAPS with allot of people reporting almost no frame rate loss while recording so expect allot more FSX videos from me :). Regards Michael Atherton

I think there are some changes in Win8 having to do with thread scheduling and management in the kernal, but I suspect it's one of those things where if you don't take advantage of it in the progam/app it isn't visible to you. All I've tried is FSX itself, without any addons. I don't have reason to believe any would cause problems, but by the same token until you try it you can't be sure. scott s. .
August 2, 201213 yr Windows 8 is a new kernel and not NT... This is incorrect. Windows 8 is Windows NT version 6.2. Windows 7 was version 6.1, and Vista was 6.0. That's right, not so much difference after all.
August 3, 201213 yr Win8 could be MS's biggest flop ever. Yes worse than Flight because it is their bread and butter! But, whats the PC world going to do ? Go to the competition? :)
August 3, 201213 yr I wouldn't go through all that hassle of reinstalling Windows, not to mention FSX and all the addons just for Windows 8. There's an old saying, if it's not broken, don't fix it. Stick with what you have. Jeff Thomson
