August 22, 201213 yr I would just prefer the new Air Force 1 to be a 787.... I heard the argument about the 4 engines and I think that is a load of crap....Like the Luftwaffe is going to shoot down a 747 like it is was B-17 bomber LOL If anyone is going to hit an Air Force 1 at this day and age, it won't matter how many engines it has because it will be gone, stop thinking like this is World War 2. Just like Pearl Harbour and 911....future attacks won't be what you think it is and that is the entire idea behind them. (and this is just my thoughts and opinion as a humble citizen who intends to hurt no one ever) I am just being realistic here. Well, this is probably more like post 9/11 than WWII. So if someone wants to take out AF1, chances are it will probably be with a hand held SAM or two or three. In that case, it is probably better to have 4 engines rather than 2.

It won't come from any technology that we are currently aware of....That is the entire idea behind a surprise attack. France created the Maginot Line which was expensive and useless.....The concept of an Air Force 1 being a 747-800 is entirely expensive and useless as well. It is a sitting duck.... Deception is better...Scramjet him outta there is all....to where ever (maybe New Zealand LOL) Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
August 22, 201213 yr I think the current AF2 is the best AF1 out there. On a side topic, I wonder why that spectrum the 757 offers never got renewed. It's a powerful plane, not too big, and operates at some rather tricky airports. What came after that one (in that same segment)? From the passenger loads, I think the larger 737 variants do the job, but those are different in regard to the 757 capabilities. Not?
August 22, 201213 yr I think the current AF2 is the best AF1 out there. I agree as well....The VP jet is more manouverable and just kicks butt all around....LOL 757's are the best tubes ever produced.... Cheers Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

In that case, it is probably better to have 4 engines rather than 2. Right. Plus no ETOPS limitations. And I guess Boeing wouldn't mind the extra orders (altough the current AF1s were purchased on the used market, if I am not mistaken). Politicos get a lot of (sometimes deserved) flak for flying in expensive executive jets, but, as mentioned above, a large jet is also good for taking along the press and some businessmen. In France, where former president Sarkozy had the Air Force sell two A310s in order to get his infamous "Air Sarko one" A330, the current trend is : "Look how we are modest, we all take the train". We'll see how long this one will last. Bruno PS : Didn't know the Germans used the A340. Could someone confirm this?

The reason it was useless is that during WWII the Germans invaded France via Belgium, outflanking the Maginot Line, which is the exact same thing they did in the previous war. John-Alan Pascoe

The reason it was useless is that during WWII the Germans invaded France via Belgium, outflanking the Maginot Line, which is the exact same thing they did in the previous war. And if the next Air Force 1 is a 747-800...isn't that much longer then the period between WW1 and WW2???? Maginot Line didn't even last that long Japan looked for weakness on the attack on Pearl Harbour......kind of the same on 911. OK let's replace generations old jets with a new kind of generations old kind of the same Or look at history of mankind and just do something else.... August 22, 201213 yr Please help me folks, as stated before, I was under the impression that the 747-8i plans on AF1 are already fixed (since months or longer). Where did I get that spin? PS (edit) : By the way, the wiki article on AF1 linked to the above article said that the US considered Boeing AND Airbus for AF1 replacement but that Airbus stated they would decline to bid. Yeah, I read that too. I can only guess when it comes to the insights the government would need to approve the Airbus AF1 usage. Apart from that, did you see the outcry on the (former) Airbus option for that US tanker deal? Just stating this because there's more than a technical aspect within that decision. And delivering AF1 'just' leads to the sale of two full aircraft, so it's more of a prestige thing for the manufacturer involved I guess. Nothing really showing in the books, especially when you are already late with delivering those civil A3xx planes.
August 22, 201213 yr Whenever I hear "spanner", it makes me think of Top Gear on BBC. I can't wait for the next season! At least there is the American version on tonight to hold me over. Gotta be my favorite show. It's hilarious. Sent using Tapatalk
August 22, 201213 yr Looks like the king of Saudia has the idea... ^_^ Honest to goodness though looking at that list, I'm wondering what all the fuss over here was about, calling our Gulfstream IV "Excessive". So many other countries who's financial affairs are in a disasterous state are flying around in wide-bodied aircraft. Even the amount of A319CJ's and BBJ's is unreal. Rónán O Cadhain.
August 22, 201213 yr They just follow a trend. Well, what we can't read is the status of each governmental airplane. Not all of them may be in presidential condition, so perhaps the stable or not so stable financial background sometimes shows. Looks like the king of Saudia has the idea No, France had THE idea (once). B) Sorry, me is a fan of that thing. http://en.wikipedia....nceConcorde.jpg The Concorde, aircraft used for presidential travel by François Mitterrand. Their current aircraft is nice too but slow. But he may have received better PR for picking the Concorde than switching to the large Airbus. Well, everything is better than 100% negative (means the PR).
