August 16, 201213 yr Part of the justification for AF1 to be a 747 size aircraft is that its not just a transport, but a flying White House. Has all kinds of special comm gear and such, plus the meeting rooms, offices, etc.
August 16, 201213 yr Is this a political statement? He almost cost me a job when I was a corporate pilot. It was personal to me. Chris Miller

Has all kinds of special comm gear and such, plus the meeting rooms, offices, etc. This day and age with technololgy being smaller and more efficient and network communications perhaps it would be possible to fit all those operations into a 787. I just think the 787 would be a much leaner and meaner machine compared to a 747-800. Cheers Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
August 17, 201213 yr If I was the president I would have a Q400. Efficient and so much fun doing STOL procedures! Chris Miller

A 2 engine aircraft doesn't offer that safety cushion for POTUS. In the unlikely event they did go with Airbus for AF1, they probably would select a variant of the A340. August 17, 201213 yr I thought the 8i was already fixed as being the replacement. Not? Well, I liked that one for sure. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lockheed_JetStar_Air_One_on_Display.jpg See? Also has four engines. ^_^

August 17, 201213 yr Pff, A340. Real men ™ get themselves an A380, just like that Saudi prince. The problem with the A380, is there are limited airports it could land, which come to think of it, may also be an issue for a 747-8i, so maybe it will be a 747-400. That could land anywhere the current AF1 would be able. Thanks Tom My Youtube Videos! http://www.youtube.com/user/tf51d
August 17, 201213 yr Just a friendly reminder folks. We won't let political spats or wars run here in Avsim. Be careful please.

August 17, 201213 yr Annual costs of Air Force One - $280 Million. Annual US Budget = $ 3.796 Trillion So we are talking here of an expenditure of 0.0074% of total US expenditures.....in other words a drop in the bucket. To put this in terms that most people can comprehend, if you make $100,000 per year this works out to a cost of $7.40/year. If you were trying to balance your budget you would focus on other things and so should the US government. Mark CYYZ
August 17, 201213 yr Moderator Is this a political statement? No, not at all political. I just feel that it's wholly disengenous to be so highly critical and actively antagonistic/destructive towards corporate aviation, as though it's somehow immoral for business executives to make use of corporate bizjets during the course of their business... ...while maintaining a blind-eye at the profligate waste of precious resources by not only himself, but members of his own government. Good grief! Boeing has no fewer than four Challenger's based here at KGYY that fly every day from here to Seattle and back, as well as occasional trips to D.C., NYC, and elsewhere. Can you begin to imagine how much more it would cost if Boeing were forced to ground their fleet and rely on commercial flights? Has all kinds of special comm gear and such, plus the meeting rooms, offices, etc. Well, they usually fly a second aircraft to accomodate the plethora of reporters and other sycophants along for the ride... so yeah, they need a lot of seats! August 19, 201213 yr in other words a drop in the bucket Yes but first "many drops make a river", and now it's looking like a tsunami: http://www.usdebtclock.org/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_public_debt Georges - OpenStreetMap - Ubuntu GNU/Linux -
August 19, 201213 yr Well, they usually fly a second aircraft to accomodate the plethora of reporters and other sycophants along for the ride... so yeah, they need a lot of seats! The White House press corps and other entourage fly on AF1 in the "entourage seating" in the back, however the C-17 carrying the limo and SS vehicles plus the fighter escort package can get pretty pricey as well. That sai "No matter how eloquent you are or how solidly and firm you've built your case, you will never win in an argument with an idiot, for he is too stupid to recognize his own defeat." ~Anonymous.
