As a "Past Master" at reinstalling various flightsims, I've found that it's remarkably easy to put things back to rights in a matter of a few hours, mostly without having to reinstall anything at all!

Mostly it's a matter of taking thought to preserve key .cfg files, as well as the contents of selected folders before uninstalling the core sim version. Those add-ons that create Registry entries will not disappear when the core sim is uninstalled, so once the new version is in place, and all of the archived folders, files and .cfg entries are moved back into place, I'm done!

I never attempted something like that. Some sceneries even change the core files through installers, so I do have to run them. Again. CFG is of course clear.

Did previous patches require fresh installs? I thought only 1.4 now did.

My main concern is more on the time scale. Every 1.x step is some 6 months, means 2 years gone while the one improvement on e.g. the performance is.. well, if it is there, it's small.

As for the other changes, I saw they've ruled out smaller things, but aren't we still looking at the very FSX weather system. What about the engine models, take free and geared turbines for example.

The jet model was the one from FSX too, addon devs still need to use custom stuff, even outside of the sim, otherwise the spoolup behaviour is sort of reversed.

I read they've enhanced the heli flight model, but what about the rest?

All those small FSX items like the battery discharge, the wonky gyro drift, the strange icing behaviour, a model for fuel injected engines, and so on. The fps impact of the mouse cursor.

I'm sure you guys know quite some of those, so am I the only one wondering why 2 years of development did not lead to ruled out 'small' items and only little progress on the big ones?

I am yet to see a patch... all versions were full installers as far as I remember.

And it looks as if we'll get those full installers until 2.0 is out. See Adam Breed's reply.

KInd regards

Ok, I didn't know that. I had 1.2 back then and never went through the update cycle. So in that case, I share your concerns, Word Not Allowed.

If the improvements were big, I think one could justify the install/copy over/config efforts easier. I like the enthusiasm and hope of some of you folks, so please don't stop reporting.

Thanks for the link, Jean-Paul.

Hi,

Doing this once every four to six months is not that bad. For the most part, I copy and past backed up items that includes the PMDG737NGX and 99% of my addon airports. The only problem is with FSDT, Cloud9 and Flightbeam Studios.

You dont get it?

RWFeldman - easy, boy. This ain't an argue ^_^

Mike, I understand what you mean. The process can be made a bit easier, but it's still a fuss.

i dont mind doing a fresh install of p3d every 6 months or longer tbh, i dont even keep an fsx install for that long.

Hi Word Not Allowed,

That it is, and I'd love to have an upgrade option myself. At least we'll get it with P3D 2.0.

Couple of years back, I was an installation-guy... the older I get, the less I want to fuss with installing, more I want to enjoy it!

Maybe someone programs a tool to automate the job. You folks already have that installer trick thingy (scientific term that is ^_^ ), right?

Downloading P3D 1.4 took me longer than reinstalling it.

I think of the FSX crowd, at the moment, P3D is most attractive to people that like to tinker with their installations. There aren't all that many add-ons that install straight to P3D and I believe most people are looking to transfer a lot of add-ons that aren't P3D native. The thing is if you're going to invest the time and effort to get those things working in P3D, in the end you will know damn well where all the bits go that are affected by a full installation and what you need to do to restore it.

When and if Prepar3d 2.0 comes out and it will really go to directx11 it will be a must upgrade.

Guess it all depends on what and where you fly. I mainly fly GA on a limited number of aircraft over Orbx scenery (they provide a migrator tool) so it just took me a couple of hours to get me up and running. That's not too bad considering I only have to do it twice a year.
