Again... these movies are for entertainment... historical accuracy is not a requisite

Exactly....I couldn't agree more. I respect your views very much on this as well.

Hollywood acts on behalf of Hollywood and ticket sales is a priority. Australia and New Zealand where also in Vietnam but Rambo never had any Aussie or Kiwi mates to fight with him. He acted alone....But he is just a Hollywood character and doesn't represent the US armed forces either.

What ends up happening is youth end up surprised to learn that other countries were involved in Vietnam as they grew up watching these films and thought it was a US only war.

Cheers

Btw you have never seen A Bridge Too Far ?

Nope but I am adding that to my list today....I just googled it and it looks like the sort of film I would like

That would be the worst outcome of the entertainment biz. Right you are.

But I'd say it's a common problem, not only on history facts. With TV spreading local and international media, it's up to the grown-ups to correct some stuff instead of just absorbing it. Means, if they are (still) able to do the former.

My guess is that, with the spread of e.g. US sitcoms, some national events got carried far far away from their origin. And Halloween isn't something being celebrated around the globe. Well, it wasn't. ^_^

Who was the guy stating that the media shapes us, even if we don't want it to happen? :O

Rambo never had any Aussie or Kiwi mates to fight with him

And he was a lonely, isolated dude... I was just talking with him the other day... "No one to cover my back man... no one to eat C-Rats with... drink Foster's with..." dude was sad.

Now if he had mates like these... another story.

Australian bush / Western Australia: early 1980s

And with the help of a lot of foreign made equipment to do the job. ^_^ Some things never change.

By the way, I hope Rob isn't showing confidential stuff now.

Great pics. Amazing country that Western Australia is. I've met a lot of US Army personel in Wellington over the past year as they are training in Waioura Army Camp in the New Zealand North island. This area is very desert like as well so perfect for desert training. When I hang out with these guys they make me homesick.

One thing foresure is the US men and women in service always seem to have a great time when they come to both Australia and New Zealand.

Rambo could have used a nutter of an Aussie or Kiwi mate to have his back. I think that would have been great.

Getting back to the original topic and also talk about historical films, to me the best documentary ever was "9/11" by the Naudet Brothers.

..

The documentary started as a study of a rookie FDNY firefighter. It was one of the most amazing films I had ever seen to this day.

I wonder if that one is on YT. Well, acts as a tip. Thanks for that, Bill.

Cool,

If you have Netflix, add it to your queue ASAP. You won't be sorry. I won't tell you much more or I will spoil it.

The September 11 attacks by resulted in almost 3,000 immediate (attack time) deaths, including the 19 hijackers and 2,977 victims. 372 foreign nationals (excluding the 19 perpetrators) perished in the attacks, representing just over 12% of the total.

The immediate deaths include 246 victims on the four planes (from which there were no survivors), 2,606 in New York City in the World Trade Center and on the ground, and 125 at the Pentagon. About 292 people were killed at street level by burning debris and falling bodies of those who had jumped or fallen from the World Trade Center's windows.

All the deaths in the attacks were civilians except for 55 military personnel killed at the Pentagon. Some immediate victims were not added to the list until years later.

More than 90 countries lost citizens in the attacks on the World Trade Center. The foreign countries with the highest losses are the United Kingdom (including the British overseas territory of Bermuda) with 67, the Dominican Republic with 47, and India with 41.

I am not quite sure just how national concerns entered the equation, when so many people the world over have reason to remember that day.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

It was an international event as it happened at the World Trade Center involving many multi-nationals, however it did happen on US soil with the civilians being the target.

Same goes for the London Subway bombings and the Bali Nightclub attacks. Many people from many countries are effected.

On the topic of history if you want a full perspective on WWII then The World at War is an amazing documentary series. Yes it feels a little dated (it was filmed in the 70s but in its favour that meant that quite a few significant people who took part were still alive to interview) but nothing else has come close, before or since, to providing a definitive guide.

Thanks Great Ozzie for mentioning A Bridge Too Far...I am picking up the book tomorrow and going to see the film after (I prefer to read first as watching the movie ruins the book)

I don't know why I haven't picked up on this one yet but I am now excited, this cast is awesome:

Where was I that day? 6th grade. I remember looking out the window and seeing the buildings burning. I didn't know what was going on at first. But later on in the day, I overheard the teachers saying that some planes had hit the world trade.
