September 14, 201213 yr That Opus "thing" is very simple to use. If you only have one PC, there is no "clientside this and client that". Once you have set it up, you click on the OpusFSX Server icon, and it opens instantly. You then click your FSX icon as you would normally do, and click Fly now. FSX loads, the OpusFSX weather automatically initilizes in about 10 seconds, and then you do whatever you would normally do. I just got OpusFSX two nights ago and I can second this...it is very easy to use. Easier than AS2012. There is no need to import a flight plan or anything. You just launch it and go. Of course you can configure it if you'd like to from something other than the defaults. I am coming from AS2012 which is excellent too in its own right. I'm still new to Opus and haven't flown enough flights yet to say that I like it better than AS2012 but it's definitely promising. Dev support is excellent too!! It's definitely worth checking out. I'm pretty interested in Opus as well. I need to spend some more time on the website. I can't tell if it's freeware or payware yet. If freeware, I think I'll try it out while waiting for the new ASCore. It is payware. They have a demo available though. Regards, Kevin LaMal "Facts Don't Care About Your Feelings" - Shapiro2024
September 14, 201213 yr Author What do you think of the Dynamic Head movement part of it? Can I get rid of EZCA if I go with Opus? I love EZCA, but it is buggy and not infrequently causes crashes at start up for me.
September 14, 201213 yr I asked this question in another thread, but haven't gotten any responses, so I thought I'd start fresh. I like the textures from REX, but I'm not happy with the weather engine, even though improved by Essential. So, I'm thinking I'll get Active Sky, if only to have similar weather to those I fly online with who use it. I'd prefer to just get Evolution, as I only want the weather engine. If I do, will I be missing out on improvements to the weather engine that are in AS2012 but not Evolution? I've looked at their website, but can't find an answer. Anyone who has had both care to comment? I had ASE before AS2012 and, to be honest, it is tough to tell in a comparison of the two weather engines. They both are good. The graphics that come with AS2012 though are better and in my opinion worth going for it over ASE. Regards, Kevin LaMal "Facts Don't Care About Your Feelings" - Shapiro2024

I probably will give it a shot at some point in the future but right now the biggest interest in this for me is their weather engine. September 14, 201213 yr Moderator It's hard to judge graphics - they are strictly in the eye of the beholder. Way back when, Chris Willis had a product which had the best clouds at the time. Then came Xgraphics which I felt were better. Then FEX which gave me beautiful graphics with minimum framerates. Then REX - didn't care for them or the FPS hit on my system - stayed with FEX. Then AS2012 and I can say that I prefer that to all prior. For me, there are two criteria - it has to look realistic and pleasing to my eye and it has to have little or no impact on my system OUT OF THE BOX! I have my system set so that, to me, it is perfect. If I add something that changes that, then I pass. I know that I could tweak settings and such to get it back the way I want but why bother? I used AS2012 and not only were my graphics excellent but there was no performance hit. As to the differences in the weather engine beyond FS9/FSX compatibility - lots of subtle improvements - no one biggie but they add up to an overall pleasant experience. Mainly, accurate weather depiction and winds with little or no performance hit. Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
September 14, 201213 yr Perhaps this will help - http://www.hifitechinc.com/news/49-development-news Vic Yes, about time we heard what Damian and company have in store. I use AS2012 for weather engine and graphics (no rex stuff) and look forward to SP2. As well I wonder if finally they have figured out how to have realistic aloft winds with no bugs and weather that is not globally based with this new weather injection method. Right now DWC is the only way to get aloft winds realistic and not have the fsx wind bugs. But in order for that to happen we have to have global weather model so no building fronts in the distance that you fly into and out of. Eric

I wonder how this compares to Opus...That's why I just bought Opus - to get weather that you fly into and doesn't just "pop up" around you. Well, I guess I will be able to compare once they release SP2 as I now own both. Regards, Kevin LaMal "Facts Don't Care About Your Feelings" - Shapiro2024
September 15, 201213 yr Guys Quick question, I was about to buy REX, but is AS2012 the same product? It looks like some are saying its pretty much the same, only better? Richard... Amateur Pilot and UK Web Hosting Guru 🙂
September 15, 201213 yr I'm not positive, but isn't there a setting in the FSUIPC that conflicts with the smooth cloud transitions? Best regards, Jim Not sure. I didn't change anything. "Smooth Cloud Transitions" Is the only option to fly FSX without stutters and drop of frames.
September 15, 201213 yr As2012 with Rex textures. Several people have recommended this but what does it mean? Are the Rex textures cloud/sky textures, or sunlight/shadow textures on the ground? I use GEPro with ASE in FS2004. This associates ground textures i..e sunlight/shade according to the ASE weather. I don't know how accurate it is but it looks very good to me on my system. Now that I have FSX I cannot use GePro/ASE and am looking for a replacement combo. John
September 15, 201213 yr You can use ASE. There's a drop down to swap it to FSX. But you'll need some new textures. What people tend to mean is REX textures for water, sky runways etc, with AS2012 weather generation. REX Essentials will generate weather and AS 2012 has textures, so you can cut those two any way you want. Mike Mike Dryden

And, again, as far as I know, I cannot use ASE with REX. Seems for FSX I need to upgrade ASE to AS2012 and probably add in REX instead of GEPro. John
September 16, 201213 yr You can use Rex with ASE. ASE provides the weather model and REX the sky and water textures. That applies to both FS9 and FSX, with the appropriate version of REX. However, you're correct that you will need a replacement for GEPro. Mike Dryden
