September 17, 201213 yr Hi! Just bought a new computer, and i'm experiencing (what i believe to be) bad performance in FSX when running the NGX. My specs are: Intel 3570K Zotac GTX670 8 GB ram Nothing is overclocked. I'm anywhere from 15 to 30 fps in the VC on the ground at most urban airports, averaging at about 20-25 with autogen disabled and FSX on generally mid settings. Resolution is 1680x1015. When i view the aircraft from the outside, or with 2D panels its a bit better (30-40FPS) but still not what i expected... I have no other addons running. Both NGX and FSX is up to date. Is there something wrong here, or do i just need to lower my expectations? Ending up with 15 FPS when i put in all the other addons is not very good... Thanks so much for any help! ^_^
September 17, 201213 yr Try to tweak your FSX.cfg through this website ... http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html Let me know if that helped! Cheers Andreas Paul

September 17, 201213 yr You should try out the DX10 forum as well. Well worth the tweak. Nick Hatchel "Sometimes, flying feels too godlike to be attained by man. September 17, 201213 yr Author Thanks guys! I tried to apply the automatically tweaked fsx.CFG, it gave me a few frames extra but noting revolutionary ... As a reference im loading the first PMDG tutorial flight that starts on the ground, not quite sure where it is. Does anyone have any idea about how good my fps shoud be with my specs?
September 17, 201213 yr Thanks guys! What anti-aliasing settings are you using in Nvidia Inspector? What scenery? Traffic? No add-ons is what you said, but where are you flying and with what settings? Do the FPS fluctuate (stutters) or are they continuously very low when afflicted? What we're trying to do is figure out if you're "bottlenecking" the GPU or the processor. This is easily done when we have all the information. That means taking some extra time and giving us a specific scenario in which performance isn't what you expect it should be. In review: AA settings Traffic settings Scenery/area you're flying over You should get great performance with that rig! ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
September 17, 201213 yr I'll piggy back on what Zach stated. Just because you have a GTX670 doesn't mean FSX will run like a rocket. FSX is much more CPU dependent that GPU dependent. Granted a great video card really helps, but in finding out what is causing the low frames, more specifics need to be provided. What operating system...32bit or 64 bit? Is FSX on the same hard drive as the OS? What video driver version are you using? Not all Nvidia drivers work well with FSX. Is it low frames or do you really have stutters or lag? Personally I think too much emphasis is placed on trying to achive a specific FPS. Is your frame setting in FSX on "unlimited" or a specific setting? If it's smooth and lag free, I would never worry about FPS. There are enough of us here that can make recommendations for you to try. It just helps to have more information to base recommendations on. How does FSX run with the default 737 or other payware aircraft (if you have any)? I agree with Zach...you should have great performance with the few system specs you have stated. Steve StubbsUSAF (retired)
September 17, 201213 yr Author Thanks for a great answer, ZachLW! I will try to give you as much information as possible: First of all, here is the link to a screenshot from FSX with taskmanager and Nvidia Inspector: http://bildr.no/image/1276109.jpeg (i don't know why, but you must manually change bildr.no/thumb/ to /image/ to get full size) Im standing on the ground at Amsterdam Schipol. Antialiasing is disabled in FSX Autogen on very dense (changing this down dosent change much). No traffic at all. Scenery complexity on very dense. Blue skies. Clouds Draw distance at minimum. FPS is a bit bouncy when looking around (20-30) but no stutters. I currently only have 4 GB ram inserted, since there was a problem with one of the two modules, giving me some blue screens. So im waiting on a new one from the store. But i had the same performance problem with 8GB inserted. Just tell me is there is any more information you guys need! So glad for any help i can get! ^_^
September 17, 201213 yr There are a million reasons why you may be experiencing poor performance Alex and it's almost impossible for anyone to offer an opinion without knowing a) your FSX slider settings B) any cfg tweaks d) what addons you are running e) weather settings etc etc. Pwrhaps I could suggest you first grab some screenies of each of your FSX control panel settings and post those along with the rest of the information I have suggested. Cheers... BTW what Steve has said about the GPU is extremely relevant. IMO far too many simmers put far too much emphasis on the GPU, although your card will be a blessing in heavy weather situations, it will not be of any greater benefit than some of the less expensive cards from a frame rate POV. September 17, 201213 yr Author Im running 64bit Windows 7, FSX on the same hard drive as the OS (Intel 330 180GB SSD) Driver version is 301.42. And the low FPS is something that bothers me much, and that i notice constantly. So much it makes me feel like something is very wrong ... :( I will give you screens of my sliders asap, dough changing them doesn't change much. Just one thing: When running FSX, one of my CPUs 4 cores is constantly on 100%, while the others show about 10-20 percent on the graph. Can this be the cause of my problems or is it FSX's age that makes it this way on modern CPUs?
September 17, 201213 yr Overclock your cpu. Will make a significant difference. Get yourself up to 4/4.5 ghz, that's a sweet spot for FSX imho. Paul Scholey Paul Skol
September 17, 201213 yr Overclock your cpu. Will make a significant difference. Get yourself up to 4/4.5 ghz, that's a sweet spot for FSX imho. Paul Scholey These Ivy Bridge chips can run FSX very well with no real need to overclock (though I definitely would). I'm just trying to stay on topic without confusing the OP. OP: I still don't know what, if any, anti-aliasing settings you're using in Nvidia Inspector. Let's start by pulling the autogen slider back to "Very Dense" and the anti-aliasing back to 4xS with 4x Supersampling within Nvidia Inspector. Ryan has a great bit on how to do this in the PMDG General Forum. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
September 18, 201213 yr If he set it up by Kostas guide word for word that will give us a known starting point. I'm running a i5-2500K with a GTX 670 and it is fantastic. So not having an absolute starting point is kinda hard. Randy Swofford
September 18, 201213 yr 20-30 FPS at stock speed is about right. Maybe double ram (as you said), but your best result will be overclocking. Ivy OC's to 4.3 or 4.4 with the flip of a switch, after that you need to get a little specialized with respect to cooling. Word Not Allowed's guide is first rate, but there is always room for adjustment to individual needs. I use some of Kost's GPU settings and some of Ryan's. YMMV.
