September 23, 201213 yr There is a free version called FSRAAS version 2 (2012) Look under google. Download from avsim. I did not try it yet! Is somebody using this one and does it work?? Robert That one works nicely. I think that free version is good enough for me, so I will not buy FS2Crew's. David Chen

September 23, 201213 yr I really doubt that...all these 'bells & whistles' are very expensive to add to a particular customer configuration, there is then an ongoing maintenance cost over the life of the aircraft & then the training expense for flight crews & engineering departments. Take an operator like Ryanair for example - by the end of 2013 they will be operating in excess of 300 738s...even to a 'finacially able' airline like them the cost would be astronomical - i'd be really suprised if we saw RAAS selected by them for example...(please...lets not let this thread degenerate into a 'peeing contest' about the pros & cons of one low cost carrier or another). Conversely, operators like Alaskan conduct a large amount of their business in very marginal weather (to say the least)...this is perhaps one of the reasons why they have opted for things like RAAS & HGS....the latter probaly enables them to operate in certain conditions where other operators would struggle to keep to the schedule...thus the financial outlay becomes cost effective in the long term. Remember that SIA never retrofitted (RAAS) to their 744 fleet after the Taipei incident...& RAAS was specifically designed to help prevent incidents of that nature ever happening...it was probably considered but then ruled out as an unecconomical option on an ageing fleet in the long term...to the best of my knowledge they never fitted it as standard to the 777 Fleet either (could be wrong). We may see newer designs with things like this fitted as standard straight from the production line...but it is very expensive to retrofit into an older aircraft...& the bottom line cost is what counts in the world of commerical aviation...thats why you don't find a smoke hood under your seat...its just too expensive (in the opinion of the airline it cuts into the bottom line) & you wont see them fitted as standard until the regulatory bodies make them mandatory (not happening anytime soon). Please dont think I am against things like RAAS...I am not...the safer the better IMVHO...& within FS if it 'floats your boat' & enhances your FS experience then $25 is a relatively smal price to pay for the enjoyment it may bring you. Very well said. Jeff Blyth MD11 J41 747 NGX . . awaiting 777 !!!
September 23, 201213 yr It is a free version! But if you compare the two, what is different between the two?? Can anybody tell more about this? Robert I found a video demonstrating FSRaas, which is the free version. I've used it several times and I would say every function works fine for me. I don't know what are implemented in FS2Crew's version, so I can't compare the two. Are those functions listed below all? If so, the only "added" function is the altimeter setting (and maybe the options). I recommend you to try FSRaas and then decide whether to pay 30EUR or not. David Chen

September 23, 201213 yr For those asking about what is modeled and what is not, you simply look at the Honeywell page for the real-world RAAS. Every feature listed that the real thing has is modeled, and some extra features as well. https://honeywellrunwaysafety.com/demos.php I bought the FS2Crew RAAS and think it's totally worth it because I will use it on EVERY flight that I do from now on. It's something that I've always wanted for my sim, and something the free version never did for me. (Especially since I had to re-record the free versions sounds because they sounded awful, and even then I just wasn't feeling it lol) Thanks!Nick CrateChief Executive OfficerFedEx Virtual Air Cargo
September 23, 201213 yr I really think that I don't need a piece of software to tell me all of that. If my concentration as a pilot is such that I don't know which runway I am approaching, I shouldn't be flying. Vladimir Levkov / Владимир Левков Two miles of road can take you two miles. Two miles of runway can take you anywhere in the world
September 23, 201213 yr That's not the point of RAAS. It's to aid in situational awareness. It's used as a second check, obviously you know what runway your approaching. Wouldn't it be nice to have it though while taxiing in 3/8 sm visibility or to tell you how much runway you have left in thick fog as well. It's an aid, not a crutch. Lee
September 24, 201213 yr (Especially since I had to re-record the free versions sounds because they sounded awful, and even then I just wasn't feeling it lol) What do you mean sounded awful, because if you listen to both video there is not much off a differece!!Did you have the new version 2 out 15 sept 2012 ???? Listen yourself: FS2Crew: New FSRAAS: (video may 2012) And do you have problems with FS2Crew Raas ?? Because if you read at the FS2Crew forum plenty of problems at this moment! So I will first try free version and decide later to buy FS2Crew raas. FS2Crew products are always great and I have a lot but I also see a higher price then normally !! Robert

September 24, 201213 yr Over $40 for this?? That's absolutely ridiculous. Especially when there is a freeware version out there that runs just as well. Heck send me $40, and I'll personally call you every time you fly and let you know what runway you're approaching! I guess the saying is true..."There's a sucker born every minute... Matt L.
September 24, 201213 yr name a addon that has come out that hasnt had any problems at first release You are right! But what about al my other questions ?? Heck send me $40, and I'll personally call you every time you fly and let you know what runway you're approaching! :LMAO: :LMAO: :LMAO: Okay here I come which runway ?? :p0504:
September 24, 201213 yr You are right! But what about al my other questions ?? :LMAO: :LMAO: :LMAO: Okay here I come which runway ?? :p0504: I dont have either of them so cant reply with an answer, but having a guess the paid version will have more options to choose from etc I7-8700k,Corsair h1101 cooler ,Asus Strix Gaming Intel Z370 S11 motherboard, Corsair 32gb ramDD4,, gtx 1080ti Card, RM850 power supply Peter kelberg
September 24, 201213 yr Yeahm... might be a little steep but its too good to pass anyway.. I got it and I feel a tad closer to the reality. Regards, Martin Martinov / VATSIM 1207931
September 24, 201213 yr You are right! But what about al my other questions ?? Quite frankly I have only run into one issue and it's the altimeter setting when above transition altitude. It's simple enough and I have no problem going without it. Besides that, I have had no issues. Besides that, the FS2Crew version has all features of the real world counterpart modeled, where the free version only has a little over half. To answer your question, yes I was using the newest version. The sounds that were not copied directly from Honeywells site were obviously simply run through a text-to-speech service and sounded unrealistic, or needed some tweaking that I did with a new soundset. The paid version has professionally recorded sounds. (I don't expect this on a free app, so I'm not bashing) BUT, don't get me wrong, it was a great little tool for a free version. I paid 32 dollars for the FS2Crew version and frankly you get what you pay for, which is a nice product with all functions of the real-world RAAS and more, plus sounds that I personally prefer over Honeywells recordings haha. My point- freeware is freeware, payware is payware (at least in most cases). Thanks!Nick CrateChief Executive OfficerFedEx Virtual Air Cargo
