October 3, 201213 yr I agree, FSG mesh is great and I have it installed world-wide in both FS2004 and FSX. But, it isn't perfect. Addon airports often sit on a plateau (or in a hole) and rivers and lakes sometimes as well. This is not the fault of FSG - it is because of the built-in geographical inaccuracy of the FSX and FS2004 themselves. Many FSG users find it irritating and Justin at FSX has not been able to produce a general fix, or even a fix which we could use to correct individual scenery areas ourselves. It has not put me off though, and I recommend the product with that caveat. John
October 3, 201213 yr I'm about to take the plunge myself. Was browsing through their site last night and it looks really impressive. Ben, do you mind posting some in-sim screens so we can see how big of an improvement it is over the default mesh ? Thanks.
October 3, 201213 yr Does anyone use FS Global for mesh ??? I've used the FS Genesis mesh for years and I'm just looking for a comparison... Regards, Scott
October 3, 201213 yr I personally don't like add on mesh scenery because of the airport plateau issue. You won't notice it at many airports that are on fairly flat terrain of course, but elsewhere it is really distracting IMO. I bought FSglobal mesh and uninstalled it long ago.

Agreed, especially the cliffs it creates at the threshold of runways at major airports and the lakes that appear on the top of 1000 foot hills in the midst of otherwise flat terrain. But for the money (practically free) it is generally an improvement. I personally don't like add on mesh scenery because of the airport plateau issue. I've also returned to default mesh for this very reason. Regards; Fritz
October 3, 201213 yr Hmm - yeah - the detailed mesh is definitely not perfect - but - I couldn't imagine flying without it... The terrain goes back to being pretty bland... If I have serious problems around an airport I frequent - I usually try and fix the problems with ADEX and SBUILDER... It takes a little investment - but - the results usually make it worth while... Regards, Scott
October 3, 201213 yr How would you compare FSGenesis with FSGlobal from Pilot's? Also, does it make sense to use both? Robert Yunque
October 3, 201213 yr How would you compare FSGenesis with FSGlobal from Pilot's? Also, does it make sense to use both? Yeah - same thing I'm looking for - I can't find many comments on FS Global... I don't think you would want both as they both serve the same purpose - at least that's how I understand it... Regards, Scott
October 3, 201213 yr FS Genesis mesh is sort of like my upgrade to high definition TV. Once you make the move, there is no way going backwards. Unfortunately, the cable company knows this and they keep raising their rates knowing that they have us hooked.

I've used both those programs. Even to be able to fix half a dozen airports would make a substantial difference. I'm less bothered by the lakes and rivers although this one is a pet hate (UK2000 EGAA addon with FSG). John
October 3, 201213 yr Good analogy PDX - LOL... As far as the actual mechanics of "fixing" airports - I've done it with a series of "excludes" and "flattens" before... If you've used both ADEX and SBuilder - I'm sure you know ADEX is an extremely polished - intuitive - user friendly product - that is completely documented ( I can't believe it's FREE ) - SBuilder - lol - not so much... I think SBuilder is the more powerful of the two for terrain manipulation - though... One of the most dramatic improvements I can think of - goes back to FS9 and Fly Tampa's San Diego... It was perfect - until you added realistic mesh to the mix - then the airport was barely recognizable as San Diego and surrounded by shear cliffs... I didn't do the work - but - one of he guys on the forum made some excludes to eliminate some of the 3D highways in the southeast corner and then some flattens to step the cliffs (best you could do in FS9) to better match the real world geography... There is a thread regarding same - still on Fly Tampa... Before his work - the airport was unusable with the add-on mesh... I've done smaller jobs on some of the GA airports I use regularly... The guys over at FSDeveloper are extremely helpful - if you're interested in trying it... Regards, Scott
October 3, 201213 yr I've 'fixed' numerous airports with flattens but I've never been able to do it satisfactorily with an addon + FSG mesh. I was hoping you had a magic bullet. John
October 3, 201213 yr Hi Betelgeuse, LOL - sorry - I'm no expert - just persistent... Most of my mods where on the FS9 side of the house... As I recall though - FSX allows for much finer control of terrain than FS9 ever did... It's still a lot of work and you can't realistically hope to tackle a large number of airports... If you hit a roadblock - I'd certainly do what I am to help - but - there are certainly folks out there with a better knowledge of how to manipulate terrain than me... Regards, Scott
