Fresh Black tarmac

Featured Replies

Recently I am seeing newly laid tarmac on runways and taxways at many airports. Something I've done elsewhere must be the cause - but I can't think what.

It looks most unnatural. Has anyone seen this too, and discovered what has caused it?

My mostly used airports -Gatwick Xtreme and London City Xtreme - are unaffected. So far it seems to be just the defaults.

Frank Jones

Have you installed something like Real Environment Extreme? They come with their own selection of default taxiway/runway textures and could have overwritten the originals

Hi Gaiiden

Thanks for that suggestion. I have used REX for some time. It is such a high quality enhancement that I can't believe that any file in their arsenal would be as bad as this shiny black toffee-like surfacing.

I do have my sliders mostly to the far right, so It might be the default FSX attempt at realism. I'll have a nose around.

This thread has been read by quite a large number, but yours is the only idea put forward. What I am seeing must not be that commonplace.

IMHO, general countryside scenery, runways, aircraft, clouds, and taxiway textures are bad or good (and sometimes fantastic!) only in the eyes of the beholder. You did not include a screenshot. Your description was only newly laid tarmac and unnatural. That doesn't tell us much. You also did not indicate in your profile what texture related software you have installed (you even have some of your system specs sitting in your "My Simulator' profile). FTX Aero, which is powered by REX, also includes runway textures but I have no clue as to whether you own this product or not. No one knows whether you have FTX Aero installed. REX has a lot of themes that you can try to get rid of bad runway texture areas. There are other software that manages texture themes too but we don't know what you have installed that could possible look like unnatural, newly laid tarmac. I cannot believe any developer would include in his/her package "unnatural, newly laid tarmac" so it could be a video card/monitor problem. I don't consider any of the default textures to be substandard either and look much better tahn newly laid tarmac (I now have GEX installed so no longer have default textures)! I hope that in the future you do describe your problem a little bit better so that we can try to help you.

Respectfully,

Jim

Thank you for the lecture, Jim. If I may say so - you use the word 'respectfully' rather loosely.

I am sorry I asked.

Frank Jones

Didn't mean to lecture but you were lecturing us for not responding and I just wanted to respectfully let you know what you had to do to get more people to respond to your issue. Perhaps there is a problem with your textures.

Describing my all too brief note as a lecture is stretching it a bit. If you read anything in my profile you will have noticed that I am nearly 80 and at this time of night (22.40) I am rarely in the best of moods.

I should not read the forums this late, but should shut down my computer and go to bed. If I can recall how to do it, in the morning I'll post a picture.

Also, I will try to do better with my profile.

Hi Jim

It is morning and I have re-read your note. I am sorry for my response; tetchy is the word for it. I see now that you were just trying to help.

Today - I will list my add-ons (there are a lot !) and take a screenshot. Let's hope I can remember how to post the latter. I knew at the outset that more information would be needed, but I wasn't sure what and how much. Hence my wide question looking for someone else who'd seen this.

Mike - Thank you for your mediation. Has Jim been on to you about your profile? I was one of the first to comply with Avsim's request on this. I suppose that was one of the things that niggled me yesterday night.

Metaphorically, it is wrong to keep my blue side up. It's got to be - bright side up in future.

Best regards to all readers

Thank you, Richard. When I was your age I never expected to last this long. Clean living pays off, it seems  .

The photo was taken earlier this year, so I'm lucky physically as well as mentally.
