October 25, 201213 yr Again, nice try, mgh. Besides, copyright infringement isn't theft. It never was. So why parrot the wrong message? Wouldn't it be more constructive if one took care of piracy without declaring a whole nation to suspects as they are trying now? What do you think?
October 25, 201213 yr There's no effective way stop to theft - otherwise prisons wouldn't be full of thieves. So let's not bother? Not being a lawyer, so I won't say what is what. But both things are illegal. Bother yes, though if you can't effectively do it, do it the best it can be done. Investing more into preventing than development would be counterproductive.
October 25, 201213 yr There's no effective way stop to theft - otherwise prisons wouldn't be full of thieves. So let's not bother? The problem is that they have bothered and bothered and bothered..... And continually failed, whereupon they scream the rallying cry "Something needs to be done!!" And they launch into yet another attack that increasingly hurts the rights and freedoms of the whole world. And they still fail; whereupon the rallying cry is heard again as they tilt at the windmill once more. I am getting to the point where I don't think they will be appeased until I am bound hand and foot in my house with my mouse finger tied to a switch that's attached to a camera with a two year recording capability. And they will still fail at doing anything but eventually making me and most of the wider world lose every bit of sympathy that their original complaint may have generated. We are all connected..... October 26, 201213 yr Besides, copyright infringement isn't theft. It never was. Conspiracy to defraud by facilitating infringing copyright is a criminal offence in the UK. An operator of a pirate site was sentenced to 4 years imprisonment. That seems quite an effective law - perhaps other countries shoud adopt it? Gerry Howard

That seems quite an effective law - perhaps other countries shoud adopt it? My, that should fill up the jails quickly. I wonder how many kids would end up in prison before the outcry, backlash, boycotts and rollback began. Popcorn, please. There is a reason why they tend to prosecute only big "make an example of him" offenders. And even then, I contend the increasing heavy handedness of it is beginning to push public sympathy in ways not intended by the backers of these measures. We are all connected..... October 26, 201213 yr My, that should fill up the jails quickly. Fill up jails = need more jails = more expensive = higher taxes = less income = higher crisis-chances = need to go on? The world is built on capitalism... capitalism involves theft. - "the theft of alien labour-time on which the present wealth is based" (it is another kind of theft, but theft noneheless)
October 26, 201213 yr Allthough capitalism is the one single factor that has bettered the most amount of peoples living standard, health and life expectancy by far in the history of the world. Far more successful than even penicillin
October 26, 201213 yr Even in the UK, copyright infringement isn't theft. And that's exactly what I wrote. The point was to prove that there is a difference between parroting some industry's theme and looking what the legal definition actually says. I think the need for pointing that out just showed. ^_^ And 'effective laws' fill up jails, yes? Interesting. I'd say concentrating on symptoms creates such measures while the causes stay untouched. The last 'effective' one was that (UK) Internet blockage which lead to a free promotion for the banned site and to tons of folks circumventing the blockage, later leading to an increase in traffic right where they tried to avoid it. I'd call that a disservice on the dreaded case. Effective disservice, on that we do agree. I actually wonder what the next step is.
October 26, 201213 yr Allthough capitalism is the one single factor that has bettered the most amount of peoples living standard, health and life expectancy by far in the history of the world. Far more successful than even penicillin Common sense had a lot to do with it too. These laws are based on a block of very narrow self interest, and are not passing a lot of peoples common sense smell test. You can begin to surmise you may be going too far when your most natural allies, the content providers themselves, begin to back away, singly and then in groups. We are all connected..... October 26, 201213 yr Even in the UK, copyright infringement isn't theft I never said it was. Read my original post again. Gerry Howard
October 26, 201213 yr Not theft? To show how ridiculous its getting, read this. (Now wending its way through the supreme court) http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2012/06/if-youve-ever-sold-a-used-ipod-you-may-have-violated-copyright-law/258276/ This is where successive iterations of "Something must be done!!!" leads you on the copyright front. Most people would say this makes no sense at all. Tell that to the judge, if this is upheld. We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically......
