I almost drank the kool-aid

My experience lately with FSX Gold pretty much mirrors yours, Bill. It's hard to walk away from FS9 at this point, as beautifully as it runs on my new PC. I'd like FSX better after some improved texture and landclass addons, no doubt, but I can't quite bring myself to make the investment at this point.

That is indeed where the expression came from. Rather or not it's outside of your historical horizon or not.

I don't believe I said anything that disputed that?

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

Honestly, I couldn't quite hone in on exactly what it is you were saying. Sorry

I broke down and bought the Gold Edition of FSX. My computer runs it just fine. My first impression was it had a lot of eye candy. I also thought the airplanes had more functionality. I thought "This could be something really nice". After a few days I thought I might dump FS9. I decided to take one more flight out of Seattle to Portland, Oregon in the DA Cheyenne. About half way there, I started thinking I would have to be crazy to leave FS9. I've done all the tweaking I have numerous addons and twice the framerate. I will probably keep both simulators, but FS9 is my go to version.

FSX is a really great sim but you must have a really good PC with expensive Hardware

With the right tweaks, ENB, addons, FS9 can look pretty nice too :)

50K Cloud layer with Active Sky:

BillW, I had exactly the same experience! Problem is.../both/ sims are old now, and somewhere down the line are going to wither on the vine of technology...

I like lemon kool aid

That being said, getting DX10 Preview to work has made a huge difference in how FSX works on my limited hardware so you may want to give that a try before pouring the kool aid down the sink.

How does dx10 work on fs9?

It doesn't.

It's called FS9.5 and does the job for me.

You need to spend a little time getting it right is all, and a little altitude.

Active Sky is the last FS9 frontier, feng I see you're running an I7 for it!

I have seen 6fps when the weather gets complicated, imagine having to upgrade your computer to run FS9 - never thought I'd see the day...

So if it doesn't, can you run fsx and fs9 together on same hdd with dx10 only applying to fsx?

No reason why it should not work as FSX will call whatever DX10 functions it needs with no effect on FS9.

I added Ultimate Terrain X and GE Pro X and I must say it was a major improvement . Another $75, but very typical of both sims. Someone had to come up with software to make it really good. By the way, the Kool aid commment did refer to brainwashing and not mass suicide. Quite frankly, I've never heard it used in the mass suicide context. To each his or her own.

I've gotten a new machine since then. A i7-3960 overclocked at 4.3 GHz; 16 Gigs RAM and 3-way SLI 680GTX....all to run FS9! j/k. FPS stays pretty solid at 60 (locked at 2560x1600), but with the PMDG 747 parked at Vienna during a thunderstorm, the fps might dip down to the 50s.

FS9 will never die!
