November 3, 201213 yr No updates unfortunately... still no power, heat, hot water... It is now Saturday. Hearing possibly Wed. to have services restored. No hotels anywhere although some gas lines are getting better. So while you guys all have your technology conversations please remember some of us are still very very much in the middle of this.... I was trying to use this thread to keep others updated I was ok and find out if other avsim members were ok and needed help around me but it is just getting lost now and you have to scroll through pages of discussions to get an update on someone... Then guys like Kevin report they still have no power 4 days later and everyone in this thread ignores it and goes on with their own conversations. It defeats the purpose of this thread and shows a total lack of compassion. How about someone asking where he is or if they can help in any way??? Kevin, where are you located? I have a generator in NJ. Have people in the house all day charging devices, have a space heater and we are getting by. Can I help you at all??? Have a Wonderful Day -Paul Solk
November 3, 201213 yr Someone says they were near a great fire... another in a hurricane 50 years ago... I think attempts to identify with those suffering. No one says anything to Kevin... some of us know what it is like to be w/o power / running water for days. So he is not ignored... How do you know I don't do what I can? Like donating to the Red Cross / Salvation Army... praying for ur guys safety / health / well-being... Kevin was not ignored. Just about the last thing I said to my son before bed last night was how fortunate we were not be experience the tragedy occurring on the East Coast. Personally, I am not in a position to travel there and assist as a first responder. 20 years ago... yes I could have... not now. How many here show compassion but don't advertise it? Stan has easy a couple thousand dollars worth of trees to move. That is once he gets squared away with power. He in our thoughts and prayers too. And something else... not even government officials have a handle on this mess. But I do agree... the tech discussions would be served better in another thread. Some did not take the hint when global warming got dragged into this thread and I asked to knock it off. Hope the best for you Solk... you were in one of the hardest hit areas. What I see and hear on FOX showing NJ... Staten Island... as I said before... it's heartbreaking.

November 3, 201213 yr I welcome diverse input, as is to be expected on a forum spanning multiple continents and viewpoints. I'm sure most do here... that is not the argument here... how hard to open a thread on the matter (technology) if that is what someone wants to discuss? I may as well dive in and talk about "why I want to be Amish"... but it won't serve the thread very well.
November 3, 201213 yr Commercial Member I may as well dive in and talk about "why I want to be Amish"... but it won't serve the thread very well. If you do, let me know. I'll buy a shed from you. I wanted to know about how the storm was affecting people as individuals yes, but I see no reason besides individual tastes to limit it to simply that if some also find interest in discussing some of the wider implications as well. I might also submit that the current discussion is the largest digression from the topic so far. We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... November 3, 201213 yr Thank you Rob for the best wishes... Fortunately I am in a direct position to help being so close to the epicenter so to speak... I just spent the day on Staten island helping a friend who lost everything on the same block 4 bodies have been pulled. It is gutwrenching, sobering and humbling. After 8 hours of that I get to come back to still nothing in my house but I have someone bringing me a pizza for my first warm food yet... I guess the only thing i care about right now out of this thread is how are our members doing and how can i help... Stan, you are Allentown right? I can be out to you next weekend if you still need help! I apologize for being sensitive right now but when you are still in the middle of just getting by on bare minimums superfluous conversation means nothing. I am still trying to just get back to some sort of normalcy and I am one of the LUCKY ones, I still have a house and a roof unlike some of my friends! Just a very sensitive and difficult time... Have a Wonderful Day -Paul Solk
November 3, 201213 yr I apologize for being sensitive right now Can't see it anything but normal after almost a week of things upside-down. Better than throwing eggs at the utility workers (or bimmercops). http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/11/02/bridgeport-utility-workers-report-having-objects-thrown-at-them-by-residents/
November 3, 201213 yr I was one who mentioned global warming, I'm very sorry if it annoyed any of you at this difficult time. But I only mentioned it briefly and didn't fan the flames. I'm following the whole thing with great concern, ESP for you Staten Islanders and others in the apparently less priority areas. Those poor residents, chucking objects at repair crews won't make things happen quicker, but I would understand their frustration. Are any hirises still without power? Those would be a priority too, no? Politicians- damn, if they channelled half their campaign funds into repair work, you'd all have gold plated electricity boxes by now! November 3, 201213 yr Last Night... Lower Manhattan you could see (film from a helo on a news channel) w/o power... really bizarre to see such a large section in the dark. You would think (hi-rises a priority)... but the NYC Marathon was scheduled till a huge outcry. It apparently would have started at Staten Island (of all places). Last figure I heard was 2.7 million w/o power (the multi-state region and that has been some hours now). Picture of the NY Post from 2 Nov.
November 3, 201213 yr Hot topic, Rob, those plans on the marathon. Well, now cancelled of course. Do they make use of the infrastructure in a way? Means, did they for example take those generators and perhaps even that event food to help folks? Somebody surely had a lot of Power Bars and energy drinks planned.
November 3, 201213 yr Do they make use of the infrastructure in a way? Means, did they for example take those generators and perhaps even that event food to help folks? I didn't hear what the City did with them... only thing was that the two of them could power like 400 homes. Why they weren't parked on some place like S.I. Then again I heard the marathon brings to the City $340 million...
November 3, 201213 yr You name it. I'm sure the folks aren't happy on the financial view. However, since the stuff may be that close, I could imagine some clever PR guy 'donating' it. Two candidates currently fighting, at least of them may like to attach his name to a generous offer. Just thinking. Seems like they were ready to let the marathon happen. So it's not like logistics are holding them back, but, now, money.
November 3, 201213 yr Wow, still 2.7m without power? I can see why that generator picture caused 'issues'! There was an article in our aussie papers, that 30 Aboriginal marathon runners were so disappointed that the marathon was cancelled 'at the last minute'. Yes it's a bummer, inconvenient, but come on, be glad that you're healthy enough to be able to run a marathon! I think they were going to volunteer in the cleanup instead. That's a better attitude. I'd be there if I could, heck stick me on a treadmill and plug your phone in for a recharge! Simmo W, Melbourne, Ozhttp://www.youtube.com/user/id5556
November 3, 201213 yr Commercial Member I really hope after all this is said and done, people will start to appreciate and give thanks for the things WE HAVE and take for granted, such as housing, electricity, tap water and food. There are millions of people around the world where having none of these things is a normal way of life. Sometimes I see people argue over such petty things, that I say we are due for the wrath of God. The other day I saw this lady at the supermarket throwing a temper tantrum because the store ran out of paper bags and only had plastic. Just grab your groceries and go home lady.
