So how many of us are in the path of the storm?

Also, cell service was out for all of Tuesday. It seems that ATT and T-Mobile are joining forces. I did get 4G TMO this morning. My Sprint Cell modem started working too, but was painfully slow.

Glad to read that many are safe here.

Glad to read that many are safe here.

+1 to that!

A question though... are La Guardia, Teterboro and Newark still closed? The issue with the salt water in the subway tunnels damaging the electrical trunks... would salt water damage the electrical trunks along the runways, leaving ILS and PAPI/VASI unusable? Just wondering...

You folks on the East Coast; the recovery may be long, but you'll bounce back better than ever!

EWR opened at 0700L.

JFK TEB and LGA I'm uncertain of.

I know there is a large FDX location near TEB... That location also serves Hoboken which got it real bad. If I had to take a guess I'm thinking TEB may not be open as of yet (but could be wrong)

East Coasters ROCK!!! Hang in there .... The news shows how bad it is and we "left coasters" feel for you.... And like Viper said "you'll bounce back better than ever."

I agree....My mom happens to be a New Jersey Girl. B)

Most east coasters have been through hurricanes before. I was watching David Letterman last night and those guys were saying this was their 7 or 8 hurricane in their lifetime.

New York happens to be my favorite city in the world and they now how to clean up after a storm like that. I imagine the tunnels will be a challenge as when they are pumped out, there is a lot of electrical equipment down there that will be compromised from salt water damage.

I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

Hi Bill,

Yeah.... I was merely providing info how far this storm stretched out. And power outages are more than an inconvenience when it involves the sick, the very young and the elderly.

Well - going thru life can provide one with "interesting" experiences. Living in Indiana means dealing with tornadoes. Hurricanes while I was in Hawaii. And having done one tour with the U.S. Marines spending about 1 1/2 years at sea... I have my fair share of stories.

Just as probably most folk here that have passed out of their 'er years (younger, dumber, thinner) and/or spent time in the military... could relate similar experiences.

Again... this was merely about Sandy... this 1000mile monster... I find it fascinating that a storm can affect such a large area and so many people. Here on the periphery what is happening I find interesting - that's all. Heartbreaking tho what has happened in places like Jersey and NYC.

Hi Rob...

There's one particular component of these storms that I haven't seen mentioned here - and that is the NOISE.

This is the most memorable (for the wrong reasons) part of living through a hurricane. It is, IMO, the scariest part - there is absolutely no escape. It just bores through you, and I found it very tiring at the time.

Glad to see that the (relative) numbers of lives lost are not as great they could have been. I sincerely hope that all of you who have lived through it can return to normality very soon. It is amazing what we take for granted, like utilities - and only realise how essential they are when we are denied them...

Best of luck to all those who have suffered. It make you feel so vulnerable at times to what nature can throw at us....

Regards

Bill

Expanding outward from the personal situation, I am always concerned about the ancillary effects, the lessons to be learned, and how ordinary people rise to the occasion in instances like this.

Devon,

Invariably there are random acts of kindness, like all of the people in NYC who have power and have set up makeshift cell phone 'charging stations' for others less fortunate to use... that gives me a good feeling inside.

The story about NYU Hospital potentially losing all of its research materials saddens me; not only because of the loss of all that data and samples, but for all of the researchers who put their heart and soul into all of that research.

How many of us have pushed getting a generator several columns up on their personal to-do lists! ;-) kinda too late when the actual emergency happens as your fellow citizens will have undoubtedly already bum-rushed the store. Probably a good time while its on our minds to look into emergency preparedness.

For those who have access to the outdoors, generators are a "Good Thing" to have. They are fairly useless for apartment dwellers though.

I used to have a 5KW portable generator, but it was too difficult to start during the winter, so I had a 25KW Generac natural gas generator system installed about ten years ago. Being fully automatic, it's been a life saver those times when it's been needed.

Just out of interest. How long can the 25KW generator run with the gas in the tanks?

Um, no "gas in the tanks" at all. It's connected directly to NIPSCO's natural gas line, so as long as that supply isn't interrupted, it will run indefinitely...

...or until the mechanical parts break down at least!

PS: The last two times we've lost power here in NW Indiana, I allowed my neighbors to run extension cords for their refrigerator, freezer and televisions...

My 1200 watt runs about 4 to 5 hours depending on the load, which was just the refigerator. I think it's around 1 gallon that it takes.

Ah, that's even better, or worse, as you've said. I thought that if the power is down, other networks would likely follow sooner or later.

Yes, that's what I recall from the smaller units. Don't load it with FSX! :O ^_^

By the way, are folks happily using their old non-smart phones these days? They last forever in comparison with some of the huge display thingies, right?
