So how many of us are in the path of the storm?

And once the power really really goes down, that's it. They won't be releasing repair crews to even assess the damage until its all over.

Correct, as the safety of the repair crews come first. I have been through 2 Cat 5 hurricanes (in the Caribbean) and the devastation that is left behind even by a Cat 1 and or 2 is horrifying

Very sad news.....Reports have come in that the HMS Bounty has sunk off the coast of North Carolina, two of its crew are missing. The HMS Bounty is a Tall Ship Replica built in Nova Scotia back in 1960, it was made famous in 1962 in a film staring Marlin Brando called Mutiny on the Bounty.

Here are some pics I took of the ship in Halifax, Hopefully the Coast Guard finds the missing crew.

I reside about 20 minutes outside Philadelphia in the burbs. We are supposed to have hurricane force gusts within a few hours and last into tomorrow night, Wednesday morning sometime. The rain is coming harder by the hour now. Getting ready to shut down everything as the power is most likely going out by this evening sometime. If it doesn't, that would be a miracle by itself. Everything is closed and city / airports shutdown. The storm is just about onshore now. About 60 miles east of us. The darn thing is over 1,000 miles in diameter! I was going to try a flight earlier here with OpusFSX realtime weather, but why bother...would be blown all over the place. Instead, I did a flight from KLAS to KPHX just to get my mind off of this storm. Unreal. Anyway, hope to check back once power is OK. Be safe everyone else that is in the same situation as we are.

Best, Jeff

Edit, so sorry to hear about the ship that went down. I was typing when you posted.

The bounty Incident has been big news all morning. A huge shame for the lives possibly lost and for the loss of the ship itself. :-(

Meanwhile my power just went. Huge hum and a bang and the power was gone. There have been successive bangs which I have traced to a neighbors house. Tree is hitting the lines, causing huge blue flashes, a humming bang and showers of sparks every few seconds.

Called the police and cars are pulling in from everywhere. The towns emergency sirens went on for a moment just as I completed the call, but don't know if its related.

And here come some fire trucks.....

And there they go, they can't do a thing. Except to say that we will not have power for days.

Fortunately I have multiple iPads scattered around the house.....

I really hate ipad spell correction!

We had clear skies in central Indiana up until noon or so... now hard to imagine the overcast now is from Sandy's outflow.

Amazing the size and strength of this storm... lowest ever mb (millibar) beating the mb of the '38 storm? Combined with all that cold air over Ontario... the Jetstream... amazing confluence of events. Wx Channel did a "what if" some years ago on a hurricane today hitting the NE / New York area.

Sandy to Dump Snow on West Virginia

We've lost power 3 times this summer due to severe thunderstorms (2 days no power for one event)... just wondering the impact of Sandy here.

It is morning here so I am just waking up to all the reports. If that is the worse thing that has happened so far then hopefully things aren't so bad on land with flooding and damage. We can always build another Bounty.

Sorry to hear about the crew but I am curious as to why they were out there this time of year. October/November is the wrong time of year to be out in that part of the Atlantic.

Out on the edge of this one, in the western suburbs of Boston. A bit windy with rain, but where I am there's no problem with water or power -- yet. It's now 4:30 PM local time.

That's right...Forgot about the floods. I was just commenting how New York was left a ghost town but the storm didn't really do much damage other then trees and power. You are correct that flooding was the real problem from the rain further inland.

I was in NYC around that time and I recall the snow storm in January following causing more problems then that hurricane. Garbage was backed up for weeks while they were plowing the snow.

Forgive me, I just had to make a reminder point but was joking mostly. Rain just started under an hour ago here and the wind is lagging behind, but not by much.

Thanks for all the reports and videos, incredible winds in those. The Bounty was such a nice boat too lose.

I would suspect that, just as the Navy pulled all its ships out of Norfolk, the crew of the Bounty were hoping to ride out the storm out at sea.

I had a flight today on Delta to Richmond, VA that was cancelled. Rebooked for tomorrow so we'll see what happens. Oh how I hate getting paid for sitting at home

Just dont go jogging in a friggin Hurricane. How smart are the people up there? We country folk dont need a Govment official/Mayor tell us how to stay safe! :)

The ship was in Dry Dock in Boothbay Harbour, Maine undergoing repairs. It was launched from the Boothbay Harbor Shipyard on 22 October 2012 and making its way south.

I have a lot of friends that got in trouble making this sailing from Nova Scotia or Maine heading south in October/November.....They do this as the summer is ending up north and want the ship in warmer waters, Problem is that is the most dangerous time to be out in that part of the Atlantic, They keep doing it anyways.

It seems every year a ship or two is lost making this sailing this time of year, and we are talking about pleasure craft. Puts a lot of US Coast Guard at risk.

Only if you guys can hear the wind right now, sheesh. Hopefully the crew of the ship are found and okay.

As of now. JFK is closed all day tomorrow too. Well, AA has cancelled all flights for tomorrow and told us employees to stay home. We're getting paid for it though so I'm not complaining.
