So how many of us are in the path of the storm?

Two candidates currently fighting, at least of them may like to attach his name to a generous offer.

Rep. Charlie Rangel was saying how some of the marathon money could have been "donated"... but I don't think that would have happened.

This is what happens: Romney slammed by MSNBC's Mitchell for collecting storm supplies

Edit:

I really hope after all this is said and done, people will start to appreciate and give thanks for the things WE HAVE and take for granted, such as housing, electricity, tap water and food.

This is something I learned at 18 (yrs)... being in the field as a young Marine in places like the Philippines... you see people with just little hootches made from cane and c-rat boxes... you really start to appreciate the amenities like "running water".

Many here could attest to that... Tom A. in the Peace Corps... military folk who have spent time in the "third world" countries. Or those who have experience the brunt of a hurricane or tornado... It puts things into perspective.

Erm, we have to watch the thread not to become too political. As said, they are fighting, those two. This includes media.

As said, as a local PR guy and with already having the provisions for a marathon with 45.000+ runners at hand (that's a lot of food and drinks plus medical stuff), I would look for a way to make use of the cancellation and help the victims of Sandy.

I wouldn't even care who 'buys' all that stuff, so I would surely offer it to both candidates and tell them that I was ready to run that big marathon and now, instead, can plan to deliver power, food and water to the people in the area.

It really just would be a money problem for them as the logistics are already partially in place. Well, they were. Cancelling the thing and receiving the bad press for trying to make the event happen 'no matter what' surely was a PR disaster so far. And no hurricane victim received help.

Erm, we have to watch the thread not to become too political.

Ehem...

Back to what you were saying...

Sure, excellent point... but as I mentioned earlier... it really seems many officials just don't "get it"... which goes to perspective and understanding (as Efrain mentioned) how dire the situation is for so many.

True, I admit being guilty on the 'mentions candidates' case. It's just that I think that one could make use of their need to receive positive PR.

Unfortunately, the help for people in need demands for a will and a lot of money. If only one factor is zero.. well, you've named it. :(

Yeah... I certainly don't "fault" you... the blame lies squarely with the media and how they choose to report.

I do think the pleas for help are being heard... but the response time astonishingly slow.

Hot topic, Rob, those plans on the marathon. Well, now cancelled of course.

Do they make use of the infrastructure in a way? Means, did they for example take those generators and perhaps even that event food to help folks? Somebody surely had a lot of Power Bars and energy drinks planned.

I am always wary of the consensus answer on a story like this without doing more research on the issue. It's all too easy to dig out the torches and pitchforks in the heat of the moment when the media is off and running with a nifty headline.

It will be interesting to see how this story develops in the fullness of time.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

However, since the stuff may be that close, I could imagine some clever PR guy 'donating' it.

I distinctly remember hearing on yesterday's news that this is precisely what the folks who run the NYC Marathon were planning to do with the generators, food and bottled water they'd already had on hand.

6am, time to go line up for gas for the generator. House has to be in the 40's right now!

Took 'em to Jersey where they sat in an empty warehouse all day yesterday (according to FOX News).

Apparently some marathon runners (who entered the NYC Marathon) have asked the New York Road Runners what they could do... only reply "you won't be getting a refund".

About to push hour 137 now with no power. Water's intermittently coming on and off. Fuel lines have been ridiculous. Wednesday night, I spent 42 minutes waiting in line for fuel at a rest area off the New Jersey Turnpike for the MDX, and that was with probably a couple hundred cars ahead of me with twelve different lines available. Friday afternoon, I spent 92 minutes waiting in line to refuel my RAV4 at a fuel station that had only four lines available. With new fueling restrictions now, I probably need to refuel my RAV4 tomorrow night when I return from school, as I already use a quarter of a tank just to get to and from school, and with the fuel situation at hand, I'm not too comfortable letting it get below half. I just hope the lines aren't nearly as long with the new restrictions in place.

Gas is the big deal now.

In North Central NJ where my parents are, several communites had no power, no traffic lights, and no gas for days. Today after 6 days, the power came on for them. It's so easy to take electrcity for granted, but if you ever get to live in one of these power outages you appreciate it so much more.

Maybe now the gas lines extending miles will start to go away...
