November 1, 201213 yr As an Opus supporter, loyal fan, I regard Opus as the best weather engine there is. I have tried all the others and there has always been something that’s missing with all of them. With Opus, I am always completely blow away from the amazing weather it reproduces. I see that Opus is gaining strength and a lot of supporters to their software. People try Opus for themselves then realise straight away what an amazing product it also is. Then there are a few haters, negative commenters out there that slam Opus. Each to their own, and people are entitled to their opinions, but it’s those that are out to be negative towards Opus without even trying it for themselves. This is a message to really say to all those that are curious about purchasing Opus, please don’t take these negative comments as gospel and base your decision entirely on those. Make up your own minds, and at least give it a try. The demo is free for a limited time and if you do decide to take the plunge and purchase Opus, you can rest assured that your purchase comes with a 30 day refund guartantee if you dont like it. But you have nothing to lose by trying! Disclaimer: I too have no connection or association with Opus’ business and am not on their payroll
November 1, 201213 yr I want Stephen and Cheryl to use their programming wizardry on other stuff for FSX In no particular order 1. Let OPUS communicate with the NGX or other aircraft so we can get a weather radar! 2. A full function vatsim client that is as simple to use as OPUS, works over the network, launches quickly including loading all aircraft. 3. Hack into fsx.exe so we can use all cores and have more dependency on the GFX 4. Interface directly with headtrackers (http://www.roadtovr.com/2012/10/25/oculus-rift-headtracker-adjacent-reality-1695) including the soon to be released oculus rift so we are no longer dependent on TrackIR! More to come... B) Soarbywire - Avionics Engineering
November 1, 201213 yr Gotta say I love this program, finally relented and started using the Live Cameras... what a great change that was. Not to mention the support is fantastic. Stephen and Cheryl are top notch! Joseph Chamberlain FAA ADX
November 1, 201213 yr Hi, I think the demo only includes the cameras and not the weather engine, please correct me if I am wrong. Cheers, John.
November 1, 201213 yr Speaking as someone who's not really in the market for a replacement weather engine at this time and watching impartially from the sidelines, looking at the various comments and posts here and elsewhere on the interwebs, it certainly seems like the positive posts vastly outnumber the negative ones. I very much doubt Opus are going to be losing sales as a result. :-) The Couch Aviator's Diary - a newbie's journey into flight simming http://couchaviator.blogspot.co.uk/
November 1, 201213 yr Hi, I think the demo only includes the cameras and not the weather engine, please correct me if I am wrong. Cheers, John. Not true. The demo runs the weather engine for 10 mins. and only updates on the ground. To try it again, you must exit and not start the program again until 2mins. Then you get another 10min. Demo. I believe there is no time limit on this. In other words, you can try the demo for a day or a month. Same goes for me: Correct me if i,m wrong. Regards, Rick Hobbs
November 1, 201213 yr I spent half the day yesterday reading posts and watching videos of opus ' reviews I decided to buy it through Flight1 .....I spent the second half of the day flying with my new Opus weather engine and getting completely blown away by what I saw !! cheers Greg
November 1, 201213 yr .....I spent the second half of the day flying with my new Opus weather engine and getting completely blown away by what I saw !! I agree. Opus weather fills the skys with clouds and fog. No clean and reload or flashing reloads. It is a new benchmark for weather engines. Anytime a new product comes out, I see there will be a lot of negative comments. I believe sometimes because it is not offered as freeware, and it doesn't have anything to do with the software being good or bad. Opus is amazing. I wouldn't fly without it now. Robert Yunque
November 1, 201213 yr I'm also blown away by how the weather looks in FSX, thanks to OPUS. I couldn't resist so i purchased. However, i have some remarks and because this is still a WIP i will mention them here. Compared to other weather applications the settings compartment lacks a lot of adjustable features. There is a setting for cirrus but in the sim, cirrus appears only at the highest level and stays there all the time (same cirrus all the way in several +3 hour flights). Would be nice if the cirrus layer would dissapear for the next Metar station and reappear somewhere in the distance at another level. In OPUS heavy rain is also still accompanied by thunder and lightning (seems a FSX flaw). Camera adjustment (positioning only) is kind of poor at the moment. But, still a work in progress i won't complain about the price compared to what others offer in settings/adjustment to their apps. I wait and see what the future of OPUS will bring and at this moment i'm still very pleased for what it offers. Gerrit
November 2, 201213 yr Commercial Member Thanks guys and thanks 56 for starting this topic. I do think some people quickly try the demo and don't understand what the differences are between OpusFSX and other weather engines but perhaps that is our fault for not pointing out the obvious. Yes OpusFSX is a fully working product but also very much work in progress, in other words lots of new features to be added. The cirrus can be configured to randomly appear between two levels you configure in the weather dialog, this applies until you reconfigure to other levels. Camera adjustment can be made using the green arrow keys for which the speed can be adjusted and also the mode can be continuous or stepped so I think it is pretty straight forward to use, we will be implementing the cursor keys after user requests but really I don't personally think this is much different from using our green arrow dialog keys. You can enter coordinates directly into the edit boxes too if you know the rough figures which can then always be tweaked with the green arrow keys. Cheers Cheryl
November 2, 201213 yr Since Cheryl's joined the discussion, I have a question. I'm really completely not-interested in tailoring and configuring the weather to get any particular effect, whether to make an exciting flight or to get a pretty screenshot. I like to fire up FSX, say "Make the weather like it is right now" and fly. If it were possible, I'd like to be able to say "Make the weather like it was X hours ago." so I could do a flight in the real-time evening with conditions from earlier that day. Basically I'd want any weather engine to just be there in the background and do its thing without me having to think about it. What would OpusFSX do for me? November 2, 201213 yr Commercial Member That will be coming very shortly, (it would have been done already if we both hadn't had flu for the past 2 weeks!) where you will be able to adjust your sim time and historic data will be generated. You can see our Coming Soon and Announcements topics on the Flight1 forum. Cheers Cheryl
November 2, 201213 yr I'm with Dr V....I had REX for FS9, and it was... OK, I have AS2012 for FSX and it too is "OK" - though to be honest, my hardware is pretty low spec these days, and running the AS application underneath FSX uses a tad too much resource, so I tend to us it to generate and load textures, but let FSX load the weather, using the AS generated textures - of course I stlil get the issues everyone gets with the FSX weather enginewith winds aloft and sudden changes in temparature, pressure etc as you move from one weather "zone" to the next. So I'm really getting quite interested in OPUS FSX and have been reading various posts and theads. Sounds to me like a must have add-on, but I do have some questions. 1) do I need 3rd party textures, or are they included in OPUS FSX? If the recommendation is to add 3rd party textures, which? 2) I'm reading there is NO performance hit. As I said my equipment isn't top-dollar (click left) I tend to reduce the weather settings to somewhere below what I'd like to allow more resource for compex add on aircraft and scenery. Does using opus mean I might be able to go for higher weather settings and graphics - draw distance, cloud quality etc without it impacting on performance? 3) I Have dynamic head movement off and don't really use camera views - I have no track-IR, only a single 24in monitor and no EZDOK, Is it worth playing with these features? 4) Should I find that there is an impact on FPS and smoothness of flight that, though graphically impressive, detracts from the quality of the flight, how easy is it to revert to the settings and tweaks I had before? Best Regards, Drew Drew Melia, Lancashire UK Captain, InvictaJet VA http://www.invictajet.com
November 2, 201213 yr Commercial Member Hi Drew, To answer your questions, 1. We don't provide any textures, we recommend FEX (pay ware) and HDE (freeware) but you can use whatever you want. 2. Try the demo and see how your system performs, or buy the software and get a refund within 30 days if you are not happy. Detailed weather with lots of clouds will have a performance hit but perhaps not too bad, cloud draw distance etc and tweaks can improve things. 3. You can just disable EZCA and use their utility to tidy the config files and give our cameras a try if you wish, so no need to uninstall EZCA, just don't run it since it conflicts with OpusFSX. 4. No need for many tweaks with FSX apart from disabling weather updates. Most of the other recommended settings are just to improve the performance of FSX. Regards Cheryl
