REX Essential PLUS vs OpusFSX

Featured Replies

And that haze line? For goodness sake, untick "Enable realistic haze layer". This was put in at user request but even the manual recommends off. It should really be labeled "enable phoney, immersion killing haze layer". That's what's giving you the hard layer.

 So true on the feature name. It's a trap! The manual explains it quite good but that 'realistic' is a magic word in the sim regime. People just react to it and nobody reads the manual.

Another pair - West Yellowstone. 1/2 mile vis, broken at 900 in light snow. Opus, then REX.

Here, I think REX gets the visibility much better.

I know this is Opus vs REX, but AS2012 has a new (beta) patch. Perhaps we could try the three versus one another for those looking to purchase a WX engine.

Later on at West Yellowstone - few at 1800, broken at 4800 greater than 10 vis.

I disagree. The only aircraft I fly in FSX is the NGX, and with the typical max range I fly with the 737, I am not too hung up on upper air winds.

Why? I can live just fine with the +/- 20 min discrepancy between ATE and ETE.

What I can't deal with is transparent weather when descending into an airport that is supposed to be LIFR. That's where I think Opus excels. And that's what matters to me in a home simulator environment.

Of course, flying across the Atlantic or the Pacific in a 747, that's a different matter. But to say that Opus is useless for jet aircraft all together is not something I agree with. But then again, people have different views.

Daniel, what would you put in FMC for CRZ WINDS and ISA DEV (this is not NGX) with OpusFSX?

Just curious, I always take these 2 values from AS2012.

Thanks,

Dirk.

That is the the main missing thing for me in Opus.

Hi Dirk. I leave it blank.

I agree. Hopefully it will be implemented soon. Have you tried the SP2 AS2012 by the way?

Hi Dirk. I leave it blank.

Perhaps there should be some standard values for now that would suit better, any ideas?

Thanks,

Dirk.

PS: testing my first flight with AS2012 SP2, so far so good, and excited ;)

You might want to check the local weather report in the OpusFSX menu. Maybe the high altitude weather there can be useful in that regard. I haven't done any real tests with it myself just because it isn't of tremendous importance to me flying short to medium hauls in the NGX.

I have AS2012 so going to download the SP2 now. Very exited about that myself.

Yes I did, and you even replied to my post, or am I mistaken? ;-)

Switched from AS2012 sp2 (HighAlt IFR mode) to OpusFSX on the move flying off EHAM to EGLC, well, what can I say, Vargveum was right, I'd rather ignore CRZ winds and ISA deviation for a while...

Dirk.

PS: and that was @ clouds coverage 12 in fsx.cfg and cloud layers 20(!!) in AS2012. Upper 342/49 (in OpusFSX report) can be used. No other wx program can beat Opus on cloud layers depiction yet.

Sorry guys, will need to test more, the Update installer reset my Max Cloud Layers back to 5 (so it was not 20! as I thought).

Lol, will need to test again, disregard my previous 'observations'.

Thanks,

Dirk.

Switched from AS2012 sp2 (HighAlt IFR mode)

Comparing global mode to a station or theme-based mode when looking at cloud depictions is kind of futile. Smooth cloud transitions mode would be a much more appropriate comparison if you want to compare clouds depiction between AS2012 and different products. Hope that helps.

Damian, for what it matters, still I could see some blue above my aircraft on the ground in rain and low overcast. How about that? While at 7000 feet I could see bleak ground through the low overcast. I'll test @20, swear to God, I wish I never heard about that OpusFSX, lol. Will report more.

Thanks,

Dirk.
