REX Essential PLUS vs OpusFSX

Featured Replies

And now I see that the latest Opus version does have the last 24 hours of wx available for same-day timeshifting. I've grabbed the latest to give it a try, along with some of the new smoothing features.

Grrr...! I'm not much of a tester/tweaker at heart. I really want to just decide which best matches my needs and preferences and get on with flying (and I almost had!), but these doggone developers keep stirring the pot. :-)

Don't get stuck in the 'I need to test' loop, Scott. Spoils the fun, regardless of the product in use. Trust me, I know that loop from very close.

Oh, believe me I hear ya! I'd all but settled on REXE+, as it's working well and I slightly prefer the way it's rendering almost every situation I've been able to A/B test. Plus I prefer having real-world winds/temps aloft, and so far I've been impressed with the combination of working winds and relatively benign shifts. The one glitch is that I'm having an issue with recent historic wx (and have a thread open on it on the REX support site).

While I like being able to fly a day in June, for example, and have been able to do that, what I want most is to simply be able to time-shift to earlier the same day and I've had some problems with that. Among other things, that's prevented me from posting some of the comparisons I'd like in same-conditions flight. With the new Opus beta supporting the last 24 hours of historic, well... :-)

I was impressed by this video:

I have REXE+ and ASE but could never see such conditions with them. I can always see the runway or runway lights from a distance, nothing like this. Can anyone confirm the latest AS2012 can do the same we see in this video?

I was going to buy OpusFSX just because of this, but if AS2012 can show the same, i'll have to think twice.

Regards.

Great video, Alvega. I have never seen this in FSX yet, but saw it in fs9/ASE many times. Nice video and useful as a new benchmark and an eye opener for some.

Dirk.

Alvega, could you share your FSUIPC and Opus WX Options?

Thanks,

Dirk.

Hi Dirk,

As i said, i didn't buy Opus yet. The video is not mine, another user talked about it on the first page of this thread and i searched for it. I didn't post it as an eye opener, i just want to know if i can have this low visibility condition with AS2012 before jumping in to buy Opus. I currently use ASE for weather but never seen such low visibility with it (or REX for that matter).

All is clear, Alvega. And I've bought them all, as it appears they all have their strong sides and wx is just too important to miss anything. For whatever reason you posted it, I'm very much impressed.

Dirk.

Once you start adding fuel planning that accounts for average wind component to your flight plans, youll see what i mean.

I have already and I understand what you mean (I have owned AS2012 since it came out).

However, true winds aloft are not an important factor for the flights I normally make with the NGX. More important is weather conditions depicted so that you can't see thru clouds on a Cat III approach.

For now it seems you can't have both in FSX, so I choose OpusFSX.

I have been shooting CATIII approaches to minimums in AS2012 since it was released. SP2 makes it even better. Although it wasn't an approach, there are some screenies in the SP2 thread in the AS forum that demonstrate what I am talking about.

Hi Vic,

So you can confirm you have seen low visibility as in the video i posted with AS2012?

Thanks.

Out of all 3 major engines, can anyone definitvly say that it has squashed the random Winds Shift bug? I own REX now with plus and the latest opus beta, and they still have not got a handle on this. Very annoying flying with VAFS to get penalized all the time for it. FSUIPC wind smoothing and any options in the engines doesnt seem to do it. I dont have AS2012 but if it actually supresses it properly I would consider it.

Thanks

For me AS2012 did it, can't notice any shifts with it.

On the other hand with AS2012 I have never seen such thick fog like in the video, that goes evenly all the way down to the ground without visual transition, I mean without clearly seeing the ground one moment then getting in the soup next. Overall somehow OpusFSX seems to pump in more cloudiness and more variety of cloud combinations at the same time in similar conditions should I say.

Dirk.

Though the REX+ graphics look great, they still have that checkerboard look when seen from above and even though REX supposedly implements true winds aloft, I have yet to actually see it while flying.

Here's a screenshot of an NGX flight at FL360 heading to KDEN from KSTL. At this point in time when the screen shot was taken, the flight was almost directly over KMCI and the weather had been forced to update. Per the REX superimposed screen I should be getting winds mostly from the west direction at approx. 60. Instead, I'm actually getting winds "pushing" me from 40 degrees at 60.

Yeah thats quite the dillemma.I never had thick fog or actual poor visibility until I loaded up Opus.Just my opinion too that Opus seems to be the closest to the Metars particularly in cloud cover. Personally I think all three major engines should get together and instead of compromising on one, solve it all in an all in one package. LOL One engine now does a better job of clouds, another does the best in winds aloft and high altitude temps, another has the best graphic textures. Go figure.

I7-14700k 64gb 6000Mhz DDR5 ASUS  z690 ROG STRIX Gaming  RTX 4080 Super,

Just an update on my post regarding REX+ above. After numerous restarts of the KSTL to KDEN flight, I finally observed reasonable expected winds aloft out of the west. Whatever made it work correctly I have no idea... Hopefully, going forward, REX+ will be reliable and not a half dozen restarts... Just can't mess with that many restarts with an FSCaptain flight, it's not worth the hassle. I'd rather fly with OPUS's incorrect winds aloft than go thru all that again.
