REX Essential PLUS vs OpusFSX

Featured Replies

Unfortunately, no. Its afaik hardcoded. Theres only a bubble around you with the current weather. The rest of the planet has 15°C, 29.92 inches, no clouds, no precipitation and i don't know for the wind exactly but it seems some kind of ISA model for regions instead of worldwide. Hence the abrupt 180° changes in upperwinds which are very funny when you want to collect some penalty points for overspeeding in FSPax or even stalling your aircraft (for example: headwind 90+kt into tailwind 90+kt at FL410). That wouldn't be a problem since you are always inside your weather bubble but FSX slowly but continously tries to change your bubble to standard-wx. Solution so far: Make a square (or better a cuboid) of weather, tell FSX to keep the fingers outside it. BTW, i had your mentioned rate at 0 the whole time. I don't even know if this has any effect since the external wx-engines turn your setting to "user defined".

I'd hazard a guess that the ISA model for winds would be approximately: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6d/Earth_Global_Circulation.jpg

Ok, so I havn't really bought opusFSX yet... as I am watching this topic to see if I need to. I have REXE+, and I did the weather engine last night. It seemed pretty good, but I havn't really experimented with it thoroughly.

I want to know if OpusFSX has features that REXE+ doesn't have when It comes to the weather engine?

What kind of flying do you do? Low and slow or high and fast?

Afaik the main difference OpusFSX brings is that it loads all the available weather around you at once in a large area so you can see weather on the horizon and fly that way and actually reach that weather or those clouds. I did a flight where I noticed thunderstorm in the far away distance while I was still in sunny conditions. After flying along I finally reached that thunderstorm. If I would turn around I would see the sunny condition I had left and I could fly there again. Other weather engines load specific weather around your plane and that kind of weather is everywhere and you will only see that thunderstorm when you get there. If you know what I mean.

OpusFSX also does a better job on showing for instance very low fog near the ground below you and you can actually fly into that fog: other weather engines show you nothing above the ground and let the fog popup when you actually get there. However, I've been told by a real world pilot that this doesn't have to be unrealistic... He often approaches an airport and is able to see the runway and all until he enters the fog and suddenly is in bad conditions: in real life, so it seems, fog isn't as 'thick' as it can be in FSX. So being able to see the runway while there is fog low above it, isn't necessarily unrealistic...

But hey, I've found out during the last few days that TALKING about weather engines leads to nothing and you really honestly have to see for yourself which engine suits you best...! OpusFSX works with the Flight1 wrapper and Flight1 has a no questions asked refund policy, so I would advice you (and everyone else!) to simply TRY it yourself! That really is the ONLY way to find out which weather engine is best for YOU. Because there is NO 'best weather engine' out there. ^_^

Ok guys, just bought fresh copy of OpusFSX...

I am in complete love.... OpusFSX looks 1,000,000X better, and the head shake? Can't be beat.

I have to say that OpusFSX and REXE+ textures have the best combo!!!

Have to agree, Opus really shocked me as I just thought it was mass hype.

It is a mass hype. I don't know since when you are in the FS business, but this is hardly something new. If they manage to keep it up (the looks), with all other real weather features, well then, my hat down and will get it again.

I see Scott is on some comparison. Means adding to the words from the users. And I admit being excited about it. It's not that I would need another payware engine for FSX (I've already bought three <_< ), but why not compare them and learn new things?

I can find nice screenshots for any engine there is, but the ones really comparing results are rare. Hence my notes.

Seriously guys, anyone who has followed this thread and other similar threads don't let comments like the one I'm quoting here or any other comments for that matter positive or negative decide what wx engine you should go for in the end. Instead do what has already been suggested by others...try OpusFSX for yourself and see what you think.

I read there is a demo although limited but even better buy the full product so you're able to see it's real potential without any limitations and then make up your own mind and if you don't like it and feel like Word Not Allowed that all Opus wx engine is is a "mass hype" then simply return the product and get all of your money back with Flight1's great money back guarantee. You don't really have anything to loose more than the time it will take you.

It would only be mass hype if they didn't offer a free trial...but they do.

Anyone can download the demo for free and decide for themselves if its worth it.

Indeed. Definitely agree that it should be trialed and decided all themselves.

I thought I would jump in here with some pics regarding OpusFSX and how it depicts RW wx. First, I fly GA aircraft usually in the PNW, NRM & CRM areas. I typically take on short to medium haul bush assignments.

Here is a shot taken off the www.weather.com site showing a small region of light rain about 7 miles west of Westport.

Here is the Hoquiam (KHQM, Bowerman) METAR report at that time:

WX starting to close in a bit as I continue toward the disturbance:

The next two shots show the overcast conditions as I enter the disturbance. Light rain and Overcast skies, altitude is 2790, position is approx 8 miles west of 14S (Westport):

Preliminary impressions are favorable. WX appears to be accurately portrayed for the regions & altitudes I stay within. I believe the visibility is pretty authentic and I enjoy the "stability" of the local WX conditions. OpusFSX is presently working on an even better means of smoothing the transition between wx systems but I must say I'm not at all disappointed with the wx engine as it presently operates.

Hope this helps.

Reading and reading and not finding the answers that I am looking for.

I am mostly flying big iron and transcontinental (anywhere in the world). Now I am using ASE which is giving me predictable winds and temperature profiles (most of the time), means my trip calculations mostly work out and there are no more uncontrollable windshifts. Weather at departure and destination might not be 100 % correct - I have never had an actual 0 - visibilty situation. But I have lived with that up to now, although I would appreciate better.

So - do I need Opus for the weather ? I do not want to go back to those times that I came back to the sim after having a smoke to see that my plane had crashed due to violent windshifts....

I also am looking for the possiblity of operating Opus on a separate computer, as my FS-Sever does not get to see the internet usually.

Then there is the other issue with operating Opus versus Wideview with traffic and weather but this is another issue altogether....

Stay away for now, as there are not proper aloft winds and still bad problems with wind shifts. It's perfect for low and slow flying.
