I need your HELP to start simming again

Featured Replies

Hi guys! First time poster so excuse me if this isn't the right place to ask such a question.

I have simmed on FS9 for quite a bit of time before FSX came out. My rig was too old to run FSX so I took a break from simming for a couple of years but I am dying to jump back in. I need a bit of help deciding which machine to purchase for FSX. I know how flight simulator is, and I never got super frame rates on my old machine, but I would like to get something which will let me run fsx maxed out or a close to as possible. I know that when FSX was release there were no such machines around but with Intel's new Ivy Bridge and all the new upgrades PC components have recieved I am sure there is a rig out there for me.

How do you guys feel this machine will hold out against FSX on ultra high wiht payware addons such as PMDG, etc.

Any bottlenecks? Any suggested upgrades? Will this machine do fine? Should I spend the cash to get an I7 instead of an I5? Will it help me? I plant to overclock. I am looking to primarily run FSX and a couple of others games but FSX is a priority.

Or if anyone would like a suggest a different build? I am open to suggestions!

I would also love to hear from people who have something similar to this machine and what kind of perfomance you guys are getting out of it. I would love to get back to fligh simming but would hate to buy a machine only to go home, install FSX, and find out I'm only getting 10 FPS on high settings. Please tell me what it takes to get fluid performance from FSX.

Thank you in for your time!

If you know how to overclock why aren't you just building your own computer? It's far cheaper.

I don't think you should get win8 yet because not every addon is compatible. Also you should get an ssd and be prepared to overclock to 4ghz+

Actually, that rig is pretty decent. You'll have to check the CPU cooler, and put an aftermarket one in (example Coolermaster Hyper 212 plus), and then overclock it. I'd check the PSU as well. But $800 is a good deal and they'll have the OS included I'm sure. The GF 660 isn't a fabulous card but it will suffice for now.

That's only an I5. I got a Gateway with I7 3.4 Ghz with 1.5 Terrabyte HD and same memory from Tiger Direct for about that price. A year ago! Well, I believe it was $899. I think you can do better. Check the Gateway FX6860. There will be a new three digit suffix to the model number. I just found the current version on NewEgg but only with a 1 TB HD. The current one appears to have I& 3770 and a Radeon 7770 2 GB. Mine came last year with an AMD Radeon 6750, but the 1 GB video memory version. I fly highly detailed models, virtual cockpits, with terrain and environmental add-ons, and have virtually no frame rate issues.

Keep looking around. I love this Gateway. It has (4) easy to get to USB ports, two on the top front bevel near the power switch and two more further back on the top. A multiple media card slot array is also on the front bezel at the top. Very convenient. Has USB 3.0. Also has another dynamite feature. It has two slide in hard disk bays behind a sliding door on the front panel. Slide the door down, and with the new types of HD's available (sorry I forget the exact description of the HD type) you can just slide an additional drive into place. I found that the exact same model 1.5 TB hard disk was available from Amazon. I bought one, slid it into place (with computer off), and used the software provided with the HD to clone the primary drive in the system. i.e. bootable clone. If the primary drive ever fails I can just swap the clone into place. I perform a clone backup about one each two weeks. It takes only about an hour. Valuable for flight sim users with all the ID codes we get saddled with from add-on suppliers.

I have the i5 3570k and have it overclocked easily to 4.6ghz with the Coolermaster Hyper 212+ and it's great.

Agreed... the 3570K vs 3770K doesn't do a whole lot in FSX. In other software like multimedia etc it would help. the 3570K is a great value cpu.

Ivy bridge i5 3570K......Having one and really wringing it out with FSX I couldn't agree more with Ryan... The price is good, the reviews and OC experiencing great and the stability and frames exceptional.

I cooled it better... used an SSD drive as my op and FSX drive, and it really does well.

Just my experience...

This topic has been moved from "MS FSX Forum" to "MOBO, RAM, CPU's & Other Hardware".

I moved this topic as the hardware forum has several similar topics regarding the type of system best suited for FSX. In the hardware forum you will find a lot of others who want to know the same information and possibly you can gleen some positive ideas for what is best for you.

Best regards,

Its a pretty decent system. The processor is fine, the video card looks fine. Don't know how good the MB is.

The memory 8GB is sufficient but the speed is underwhelming.. Memory is very cheap... so it needs be at least 1800 or 2100 or even 2400.

The PSU 500 is a tad low... it would help to bump that to 700watts.

I too quit simming for 3+ years and got back.. I have an Ivy Bridge processor and enjoying FSX. very much. The settings are not maxed out completely... but using the tweeks that are documented here in this website.....addon sceneries and aircrafts are now fantastic.

I can relate the FSX saga to the home studio phenomenon where millions are buying up thousands of dollars worth of "add-on" synths and looped audio samples in the hope of creating the next big hit. Rarely do any of these wannabees create anything other than the redundant sound of electronica. In order to make good music you should study music theory for years. A similar train of thought can be applied to FSX. Buying add-ons left and right gets you some candy that melts in your mouth then disappears, except for the craving for more candy. I would suggest investing your assets into getting things like SimPlatesX and learning how to follow through on a realistic approach. Creating and following/creating a real-life flight plan and following ATC directions can boost the immersion experience. I'm thinking Reality XP and ATC-Pro/X. Simply buying the latest great iron tube is not going to get you anywhere except in a daze.

My rig was too old to run FSX so I took a break from simming for a couple of years but I am dying to jump back in.

Exactly what my issue was. I wanted the NGX but my old machine couldn't run FSX. Then, one day, my old rig wouldn't start. Fast forward a few (5) months of saving some money, and I bought parts to build my own simple rig that was FSX ready.

It's an i52500K 3.30 3.60 GHz, Asus mobo, 8GB ram, 1GB HD video, simple 600w power supply, Windows 7 64bit.

Built her up by watching NewEgg tutorials, installed Windows, FSX, NGX in that order, haven't overclocked, and I couldn't be happier.

Total cost: Just over $1000 Canadian including shipping. Runs fine for me.

ASROCK H61M-HVS, uATX this is the motherboard that is mentioned in the description of the system and since it is a H61 chipset so you can't overclock your processor with that motherboard. I don't understand why they have paired an unlocked processor with a motherboard that does not support overclocking. You can take a look at ASUS P8Z77-M pro. Its a micro-atx form factor but overclocks really well. If you are not looking at extreme overclocking(i.e. 4.6 ghz+) then you can save a few bucks and go for a ASUS P8Z77-M board. I have also heard that ASROCK motherboards have a quite rich features at an affordable price tag but some of my friends were encountering LLC drop problems with ASROCK motherboards when they tried for higher clocks on the processor. I hope ASROCK has fixed it by now. As for PSU if you don't plan on SLI(now or later) then even a corsair GS600 or Seasonic S12II 620w will be more than enough to handle an overclocked IB processor and gtx 660. I personally would have preferred a GTX 660Ti but then I don't have any idea how GTX 660(Non Ti) performs in fsx.

Rohit
