Okay.

Very strange and I am hoping someone can help me.

I am loading into FSX now, and my fps are litterally 0.1 [from 30].

Something is not right. I have done an intel burn test, passed with flying colours. Any suggestions?

Alex,

I would try to restore to a day that you know it worked fine.

I have NOT had that system issue, but I have developed the habbit of backing up everything so that if somethings goes wrong I can just restore.

As per FSX guides, System restore is off.

One of my harddrives is reading around 100mb /second, and fluctuating. Comapred to the identical other drive at 138

Alex,

If you go to NickN's Windows 7 guide, he explains how to do a Chkdisk on your suspect HDD. That is one way of finding out if it has gone pear shape.

This is not Nick's but it's how he would tell you to do it - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/guide-to-using-check-disk-in-windows-vista/

I dont think it can be related to the drive. Probably some sort of driver conflict, or perhaps an update for windows that is interfering somehow. I know its a stupid question, but have you rebooted since you got this problem? It could theoretically be a temperature problem as well, if your cpu / gpu is starting to throttle. It would have to be extreme throttling tho to reduce the framerate down to 0.1

Running checkdisk on a potentially failing hard drive is about the quickest way of killing said drive. You need to look for evidence of disk failure then actually test the drive before applying a solution for a problem that you don't know even exists. Step 1: check the system error log for NTFS and/or disk errors. If you find these errors, move to step 2 which would be to run a disk diagnostic. I recommend MHDD. Step 3, if the disk shows errors in MHDD would be to backup your data to another disk. Step 4 would be to clone the failing disk to a new disk. NOW you can run checkdisk on the new disk without risk of losing data or killing your drive.

Back to the beginning though, application performance issues are rarely caused by failing hard drives. Unless your issue is extremely long loading times, you should look elsewhere. Resetting your graphics settings in the graphics control panel would be a good non-risk potential solution to try. Checking CPU speed during load is a good step to take also. Overclocking settings not loading correctly is a fairly common issue.

Same here. i saw a large drop in fps over the week end. From 25 to 3. I noticed a couple of download of window update about at the same time. Rebuilt fsx.cfg, checked processor and video temp. Still searching what cause that fps reduction. Its erratic going from stopping on a frame for one minute or more to returning to almost the previous speed for a couple of flight before going down again.

Still testing....

My read/right speeds of the suspect drive [anyone know how to see which hardrive model relates to which drive on windows?]

They are very erratic, and plumet up and down between 100mbs/ to 40,

I think a modern HDD would come up with some S.M.A.R.T. warnings in the case of severe errors or 'just' a severely reduced performance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T. My failing ones always came up that way and even Windows then warned me to NOW take a backup. Means as long as it's possible. This worked out, except for one fancy SSD of mine which didn't give a warning but just died. However, this did not have any fps impact before it happened.

Are you using any new Aerosoft sceneries by chance? I recall that ASE module to cause some trouble for no (obvious) reasons. Mine for example likes to crash the sim when exiting and I really 'love' it for that. Thanks for those kind of protections. <_<

Well, as a test. You could temporarily move your dll.xml and exe.xml away. This will lead to a sort of clean boot for FSX, no addon modules. By this, you can check if any of those affected the sim in the mentioned way.

Did you run a deep antivirus and antimalware scan already?

(Speaking from experience ... )

With kind regards,

Bart S.

Hi Bart,

Not yet, there is no indication of anormal activities before fsx start so I was more inclined to look at others possibilities. But I will definitively give it a try this week-end.
