Dug up this topic from April of 2002! 10 Years ago discussing the virtual cockpit and the 2D

3D cockpits were a feature only as of fs2004, so I'm sort of confused...

Just keep the NGX virtual cockpit in mind when reading this! Haha

LOL Fun read. "It would sure be nice to also be able to adjust radios and such from the VC view, but that probably will be down the road." Sometimes we forget how lucky we are with what we've got!!! ^_^

Good point on that step forward. Well, you will still find discussions over 2D vs VC nowadays. Some things never change. ^_^

As for the progress itself, some other parts of the sim still present themselves in ancient ways and I guess that, after some six years, I could welcome a nice FSX replacement.

My fondest memories are of flying the stormy approach into Oakland on FS4.1, and also flying Eric Ernst 767 v7 on SATCO... those were the days

Don't start that.

Times certainly have changed but I still remember the thrill of simpler 'Sublogic' days...

Now that's a name that takes me back to the days of FS98 (when I first started simming)!

I think VC was first introduced in FS2002 actually but it was purely decorative i.e. you could read the gauges but couldn't click any of the switches or manipulate anything.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

very interesting read. I sort of remember my brothers FS98. Flying around Meigs was fun.

Weve come a long way thats for sure

There was virtual cockpits even in FS98, but you couldn't click any swithches or read any gauges...

WOW! All those who complain about bad graphics nowadays should have this pic printed!

Those graphics are modern. We started with wireframe, then filled polygons. The dithered poly fill was later.

The complainers shouldn't have the pic printed, they should be forced to fly that for a year instead because nothing else is available. That gets your head in the right place to appreciate things like sprites for trees.

I remember looking at some cutscenes from a game, and wondering if the actual game graphics would ever catch up to that quality. It happened just a few years later, and now cutscenes are generated in-game.
