December 4, 201213 yr If Windows 8 was only for tablets (which is an argument I've heard too many times), why did Microsoft put the same tiled start screen in Windows Server 2012? December 4, 201213 yr Another +1 for staying with W7 x64. Nothing against Windows 8. I've read some articles and haven't had an opportunity to play with it much myself. There are some ways it may be better than Windows 7, some where it may be worse. The jury is still out. However, all new OS's have teething problems. Some of those problems take a while to come to the surface. Systems that are overclocked, and do alot of high end 3D gaming (Like Flight Sims) always seem to bring alot of these underlying issues to the surface. In my own opinion, its easy for me to install new video drivers, easy to "fix" or find workarounds for alot of things...but if the OS is causing you issues, they can often be difficult to track down and difficult to solve until Microsoft releases a service pack. Tracking down issues chews into valuable fun time! So I'd stick with whats stable and working for now. If Windows 8 turns out to be absolutely great, you can always pick up a copy and install it down the road.
December 4, 201213 yr With all due respect reading an article and actually using an OS are hardly the same. I've used the Beta version since it's release and am now using the RTM version and have found no obstacle that hasn't been easily remedied. No different than my experiences with every Windows OS since the very first one or Android since the very first one or Linux. Win8 was tested by more people than any OS that I know of prior to the RTM release. Kind regards, Craig
December 4, 201213 yr Windows 8 is great... WAY faster boots and overall much more snappy than W7. I'd highly recommend it.
December 5, 201213 yr I upgraded to Windows 8, and have been having joy stick problem ever since. If ANYBODY have any ideals please let me know!!!!!
December 5, 201213 yr If Windows 8 was only for tablets  If I ever heard anybody say that I think I'd slap them for becoming the newest dumb-&@($* of the year... You have a lot of self control there Tom.. I upgraded to Windows 8, and have been having joy stick problem ever since. If ANYBODY have any ideals please let me know!!!!! Very vague there mate... Might be best if you open a new thread as this is a specific problem to you rather than feedback on Windows 8  Richard... Amateur Pilot and UK Web Hosting Guru 🙂
December 7, 201213 yr Author Just to close the loop: i decide to take a bit of risk and install w8 pro x64 ...my entire fsx is working perfectly ( as2012, fsuipc4, ezdok, pmdg and a lot of sceneries + saitec hardware) best fulcrum
December 7, 201213 yr Sounds good. Considering win8 pro gives you what amounts to win7 ultimate at home premium price (not even with the current upgrade discounts). AFA waiting, don't recall that win7 sp1 fixed anything for me. Not sure how it compares to fsx on win7, but multi-monitor on win8 seems better implemented. scott s. .
December 8, 201213 yr I have a question for you W8 users running multi-monitors, if you don't mind me asking... Lets say you open a web browser or application, and maximise it, has it figured out yet that you want to maximise it for that single screen only, or does it still maximise to the full resolution of your desktop? I currently use eyefinity across 3 x 24" screens, and its seriously annoying to try to full screen something on a single monitor because I have to manually re-size every window, otherwise, if I hit "Maximise" my browser then spans all 3 screens which is nuts when you just want to full screen a youtube tutorial on 1 screen only.. December 9, 201213 yr I took the Win8Pro64 plunge about a few weeks ago, installing it on a new Samsung 840Pro 256gb SSD, and ran into quite a few issues with it. After tweaking the crap out of it, re-installing all of my X setup a couple of times running into those #$#!@ StackHash errors that I NEVER had before, then getting a bit more into my BIOS for a little bit of OC'ing (thanks, Jim!), I can finally say I've had about a week of flawless flying at rates I didn't have before. As many have pointed out (lots of good points in this thread), as a new OS, you will run into problems. BUT, as a new OS, you also get to ride the cutting edge of all the better code they put into it. There are some pretty neat features that are too numerous to detail here (if you do go Win8, get Start8, and go into Group Policy and turn off Windows Store if you aren't going to use them- I hate 'em). I think it runs better- certainly boot up (mine is about 8-10 seconds from a dead stop), although my Event Viewer doesn't necessarily document that statement very well. :-) Two points I can't stress enough that I found in all my googling are: 1) you will have to spend some time getting all the LATEST drivers for everything to ensure minimal problems- don't rely on Windows Update no matter what settings you use. I spent about 2 days doing nothing but that, and found a lot of newer drivers (i.e. Intel) and I used two driver update programs to confirm, and 2) MAKE SURE you save your BIOS profile and install with default BIOS settings (NO Overclock). I read a lot about this, and have reason to believe it might have been an issue for me, but I also threw a brand new SSD at the process, which I still suspect might have been some of the problem also. All is fine now, but boy, what a ride it was for a few days there. Richard: for your question, I run multiple monitors, and probably one of my greatest likes about Win8 is that is treats each one separately. I can have a Taskbar on each of them. They also have different desktop pictures on each of them. Downside is that my screensaver is truncating pictures now, and I've been waiting for AMD to update the 12.10 CCC. Minor point, though. I can't say this is the most stupendous OS upgrade I've gone through, but it's working for me quite well. Now....off to that Event Viewer to solve some more puzzles....:-) Sean B. December 9, 201213 yr hmm, thanks Sean... So your FSX is running much better now too huh? THAT is of serious interest... My only pain in the neck has been right from the start in using eyefinity is that I cant maximise a window into just 1 monitor, it just goes full width across 3 screens... Might be worth looking into this, as I know ASUS have released a lot of BIOS updates for my systemboard to handle Win8.. Richard... Amateur Pilot and UK Web Hosting Guru 🙂
December 10, 201213 yr Richard: I should have mentioned that I don't use the eyefinity feature- I just extend the desktop to all monitors. I run my VC on the top 55", and the two 23" I use for ATC, PFD, HSI, and FMC. so, it might be just a totally different use than what you are trying to accomplish with. If you have a Z77 MB, there is a new BIOS out there- if not, I'm sure Asus has upgraded all of them. Hope this helps. Sean B. December 10, 201213 yr Commercial Member Windows 8 - don't even think of using Win7 especially if you are looking for stability. Cheers jja Jim Allen[email protected]SkyPilot Software home of FSXAssist / P3DAssist
December 10, 201213 yr Commercial Member Yes - WIN 8 handles app errors much more gracefully and seems to know how to fix them. One example is the other day FSX had a CTD and I got a popup saying that it was set to compatibility mode (VISTA Service Pack 2). I Assumed this had something to do with the UIAutomation.dll issue. Anyway I'm much happier with WIN 8 over WIN 7. Cheers jja Jim Allen[email protected]SkyPilot Software home of FSXAssist / P3DAssist
