December 3, 201213 yr Dear all, I am building a new PC mostly aimed at FSX...should I install w8 or stay with good old w7. I run the typical add-ons . NGX (and most of the PMDG planes), AS2012, EZdok , aerosoft and UK2000 sceneries , FSUIPC. Thanks for your help Best Fulcrum
December 3, 201213 yr Commercial Member Stay with W7, many users have reported problems with FSX + Win 8, and Win 8 really doesn't bring anything interesting unless you are using a touch screen.
December 3, 201213 yr I've noticed no difference at all - positive or negative. But for compatibility's sake, if you have no other reason to get Windows 8 - stick with Windows 7.
December 3, 201213 yr Windows 8. I'm using it and have had zero problems. If you're rebuilding a machine I don't see why you wouldn't go for the latest version of the OS. December 3, 201213 yr Windows 7. You probably know this but dont do what I did. I got the one install Windows 7 and wished I had picked up a standard version. Respectfully, Jet
December 4, 201213 yr Author Captains, Thanks a lot for your views ! I'll follow the crowd's advice: w7x64 ! Kind Regards, Fulcrum
December 4, 201213 yr FSX runs as good or better for me on Win 8 64 bit. Win 8 has better memory management than Win7 and boots a lot faster. The only add on that I can't get to work so far is the LD 767 but I can live without. All other add ons have worked with no problem. As far as "many users reporting problems" I haven't see that. If they have problems then most likely it's because they haven't taken the time to troubleshoot and solve the problem. Windows 8 isn't ONLY for touch screens. Unless you are set in your ways there is no reason not to have the latest OS.
December 4, 201213 yr Author Hi FTD1949, Thanks a lot for your insight. Looks like a lot of problems have occured with hardware (hotas warthog) i.e. drivers etc... I'll also be running dcs a-10c and benchmarksim falcon. Have your tries those on w 8 ? (sorry for being a bit outside of the pure FSX scope forum) best Fulcrum
December 4, 201213 yr Author win8 and my sims/games run great and stable on my desktop and laptop :good: FlashsisMayia, thanks a lot for your input. You indeed seem to run a large addons list ! Poor me what shall I do ? Getting very conflicting opinions
December 4, 201213 yr Just as an aside I'm running 4 year old hardware with no problems. I use a VRInsight M Panel which is working fine on Win 8 64 bit as well as a home made Panel, a Saitek AV8R-01 and Saitek Rudder Pedals.
December 4, 201213 yr It would be nice to know if the Win8 naysayers have any actual runtime with Win8 and FSX, and have any personal experiences with it. So far I've seen a lot of "stay with 7" without anything to substantiate it. In fact, when I see comments like "unless you have a touchscreen" I'm almost certain that you don't have any personal experience with it. The few people that clearly are running Win8 seem to have mostly positive things to say from what I've gathered. Despite the controller drop out issue which I'm wondering if it is more of a USB 3.0 thing than a Win8 thing. It would just be nice if recommendations/feedback was limited to those that have personal experience with the subject matter being asked about. - Aaron
December 4, 201213 yr Commercial Member From a purely IT based standpoint (I have worked in multiple IT departments both at the help desk and sys. admin level) I would stick with W7x64 until at least SP1 comes out for W8. I have used W8 (not for gaming) and it is fine, but it is a new OS, new OS's have problems. If you run into a problem in with FSX/Application on W8 then you need to troubleshoot to see if its an OS issue or a FSX issue. With W7 you can be much more certain that it is not an OS issue. Wait for SP1, let other people find all the problems/bugs. Personally I will be sticking with W7x64 until W8 SP1 comes out on all of my home/FSX machines. I do have a W8 VM at work but I still find myself using W7 for all my Windows related tasks and OS X for everything else (now managing a Linux server environment and OS X user environment). - Jordan Jafferjee - AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D | Asus X670-E Pro Prime | Gigabyte RTX4080 Eagle | 64G G.Skill Trident Z.5 DDR5-6000 | Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360 | 2x2TB Samsung 990 Pro NVME | NZXT H7 | Win 11 24H2 | TM Warthog Flight Stick + Throttle | Honeycomb Alpha + Bravo | MFG Crosswind Rudder Pedals | Samsung 43" Odyssey Neo G7 | Dell U3415W
December 4, 201213 yr Very sorry, that I have overseen a WIN8 thread Had Enterprise RTM for two month and Win8 Pro since first day. Pro: - faster boot, all in all faster system I would say - some nice features in the file explorer, copy task, task manager, etc - rockstable - some nice Apps available - absolute no problem with any programs. What is running in Win7 is running also in Win8 - no problem currently with any FSX addon I have - 767 could have problems, but I have not tried it. - if you probably own a windows phone (I do: really great device) everything is working flawlessly all together: all contacts, calendar etc is synchronised without any action. - I like ModernUI more and more neutral: - FSX doesn't gain anything. Maybe I tend to say it is a bit smoother but you know about such imaginations. But you do not lose anything contra: - All in all they could have implemented the tile style more into the normal OS. So you have now two systems: Desktop and ModernUI. As example, you could not drop a live tile onto the desktop or vice versa a folder onto the Metro UI - I had problems with FSX that I have lost my joysticks after a while and I haven't fiddled out why and at which point. But that was with enterprise RTM version and since upgrading to Pro I haven't had it any more. However other users still report this bug. I can't say if it's now a real problem or not - for me not. December 4, 201213 yr I got the one install Windows 7 and wished I had picked up a standard version. Huh? No such thing.... lol There are OEM and Retail.. OEM = Locked to PC (Stays with that hardware config). Retail = You can install it on any PC (Take it with you as you switch PC's in future). Both can be installed as much as you like,, but OEM can only be installed on the same PC.. Richard... Amateur Pilot and UK Web Hosting Guru 🙂
