REX+OD Yes or No?

Featured Replies

Hello all

I am contemplating the purchase of REX essentials + OD since I have been reading such great reviews about it on these forums. Since I already have ASE2012 for textures and I am using OpusFSX for weather, FSBuild and Vroute premium for flight planning, for me it seems like a waste of money for another add-on I probably don't need right! So I was just wondering what advice this great community can offer? Also wondering for those using REX essentials for flight planning, is there an option to save or convert the flight plans in PLN format to RTE format for use in the PMDG 737NGX??

Your thoughts and suggestions will be much appreciated in helping me decide!

Yes, go for it.

Mix the best with the best, as I do.

I use 'FSBuild' for my flight planning. You can save any weather format you use.

Thanks for your opinion doorstep.

Can anyone who has actually gone from ASE2012 to REX Essentials+ provide comments/opinions on their respective texture sets?

Is there really someone out there who uses REX for flight planning...? I doubt it. I certainly wouldn't buy REX for THAT...!

I own REX and I only use it for the textures. When I look at the addons you already own I wonder if REX is worth it. In the end it seems to me you are only paying for just a few textures (because not ALL textures will be beter then AS2012). If you were starting from scratch I would say 'Buy it' but as it is now, I can imagine your doubt...

I own REX and I only use it for the textures.

+1

The REX weather engine still doesn't cut the mustard for me.

I use it just for the REX OD textures which are very good.

OpusFSX for weather every time now.

Hope this helps,

Adam

OpusFSX for weather engine and REX for textures.

REX has better textures then AS2012 imo. With OpusFSX, AS2012 is now in my closet.

Only thing I don't like about REX are their cloud textures. I found the HDEv2 freeware clouds to be the best out of everything I've tried. They also have great sky textures for dawn, day, and dusk.

I know the REX textures are very popular, but the first time I saw them in a screen shot, I asked, "Are the clouds supposed to be that ugly?" It's going to be a matter of personal taste. I'll accept that some people really like them, those people should accept that I, and others, do not.

Maybe the newest textures are better. The newest Active Sky textures are better than the older ones.

They look painted, like an artist's impression of what a cloud should look like.

Others disagree, but it's just my opinion.

I'd have to also agree with that. I own FEX, REX and AS2012. I can't speak to AS2012's textures since I have never tried any of them except for onw night texture set to get rid of the 3:00am sunrise, but I have tried pretty much all of the REX clouds and hav found none that I ever liked. They always look to hand painted, over baked with shadows and really fake against the sky not blending well at all. I know they are very popular but dont look good at all in my opinion.

For sunrise, day and sunset I think the HDEv2 remastered set for FSX looks as realistic as you can get for a pretty average sky color you would see most days and the clouds are pretty well done as well. But as much as I like the HDEv2 clouds, I have a set of FEX clouds that I think look the best and most natural out of anything I have tried.

The only think I use REX for is the water textures and animations and some of the runway, taxiway and apron textures, however the runway, taxiway and apron stuff doesn't even get much use since I primarily fly into and out of 3rd party airports which have their own textures. REX is one of the products that I had to list in my most regretted purchases for FSX, not because there is anything wrong with it, but I prefer the freeware sky from HDE and clouds from FEX. I pretty much spent around $50 dollars for REX for water textures/animations.

And that set is........? ^_^ I also own FEX so I might want to give it a try.

Maybe I should also give HDEv2 a try. They are made for FS9 but work with FSX...? Or do I need to find a special 'remastered' download somewhere?

I own REX , AS2012 and Opusfsx. Although the two former progs are great in their own right, the most realistic weather I have ever experienced comes from Opusfsx in combination with FEX clouds.

This whole RW weather question is very subjective and is down to personal taste. Other than the REX sparkling wave animations (which I like very much) I personally wouldn't rush out to get REX taking into account what you already have at your disposal.

As stated above, if you were starting anew, then yes consider REX, although I would recommend Opusfsx in preference.

Probably no help at all, but just some personal thoughts!

The base package has clouds and sky textures. The clouds work in fsx but the sky textures are for fs9.

There is a patch that converts the sky textures to fsx format. It's all on the same download page.

I highly recommend both.

Just to give an update. We are presently working on a Service Pack (ONLY FIXES) for REX Essential. We will be going into beta this weekend. The priority is the weather engine with those fixes.
