Aivlasoft EFB approach charts real or fake?

Featured Replies

The nice part is the ability to display and handle a lot of information when being connected to the sim. I think a rw flyer would consider this as cheating of some kind. ^_^ You can even display your plane's position on the approach chart, lateral and vertical view that is. This is just one example.

The details in regard to rw charts are reduced as the data set doesn't deliver all of them. Well, the advantage is that for a simple Navigraph description you get to see what your addon planes are flying. All of them use the Navigraph stuff.

The price isn't that low and I wouldn't recommend the soft for someone just looking for a moving map or something. But since you can test the program for 30 days, you may like it sooner or later, perhaps not only for the chart stuff. The feature set is huge and it's really neat to e.g. receive the weather reports in the same program displaying your charts.

Bob introduced a nice phrase instead of the 'fake' display. Synthetic sounds good and you can adjust most parts of it to your liking. You can even install and start it numerous times. With one server app being connected to the FSX PC, you can use the client (display) unit on a second PC or some (Win) tablet.

And you can even help the default GPS gauges a bit since the EFB can stream the flight plan (including current SID and STAR data) to FSX. You don't need to access the FSX flight planner, it's just there and even gets changed when you select another approach in EFB or even a new route.

So I guess the big part really is that connection to the sim. The downside may be the slightly reduced chart detail when compared to rw stuff. Perhaps try it and wait until they offer a discount again. As you like.

The service and support are top notch in my eyes.

I can't fly without it anymore, its one of my best addons I bought. I load my Fsbuild flightplan in it, have a moving map, see the AI planes on it. Have the airport layout with all the gates and taxiways according to the afcads in FSX, find the right Sid and Star according to the winds, and I update it with the latest Navigraph cycles. For me its far enough detail to fullfill my flight. I use it on a second monitor, and you're able to run it at an Ipad too. Sometimes I use the real charts next to it for more detail. But the program has so much more to offer then just charts. So I totally agree with CoolP, try the demo, you may like it sooner or later.

EFB is my greatest addon, shows me VATSIM traffic, ground maps, routes, SID / STAR and enroute legs. It shows active VATSIM frequencies, borders between CTR areas. It gives you metar, in readable form if you wish.

Loads of great stuff that increase situation awareness in an hectic online environment. I use Navigraph charts for preplanning and preapproach of course. All addons run on a laptop networked.

As long as I update both my plane (NGX) and EFB with the latest Airac cycle it has never given me any wrong info, but there are something missing from the full charts from Navigraph sometimes. EFB also alerts you if there are discrepancies between FSX scenery and the airac presently active.

But, one thing could be better: MA procedures are not always shown, a d is not "active" as a plan in EFB, but I have them in my FMC of course with the STAR as always. And on my Navigraph charts.

Great stuff, easiest 70 bucks spent :) My 2 cents of course, anyones taste!

Morten

Fantastic program for all the reasons cited, especially the way it can "feed" the FSX GPS with SIDS/STARS/approaches on the fly, and the "synthetic" chart can be a great visual aid when deciding which procedure to use etc. My only regret is that for the moment it doesn't (yet) work with X-Plane 10 and so miss it greatly since I permanently moved over to that platform.

The biggest problem is that the EFB does not display all the data you need to fly a procedure. Everything that is written in text on the plates gets dropped, and tbh, what is written in text is the important part! The pictorial view is nice, but the text is critical. And the fact that the EFB runs on data from navigraph makes it less than accurate. The quality of navigraphs data is not very good, and often stuff like constraints are missing, or even waypoints. The EFB might be good as a secondary tool to help situational awareness, but for flying procedures accurately you really need the real stuff (real charts). It might not be a big deal if you fly offline with an ATC addon or perhaps without ATC at all, but if you fly online you have to know the procedures you fly accurately. It's not enough to almost know the procedure

Thanks Wims80, interesting, I was not aware that Navigraph was a lower quality service. I always thought they were the best... I also buy airac cycles from them for my NGX. Do you have a recommendation for a pay service that is better than Navigraph and that has Europe fully covered?

I am using the Ndac3 software from Navigraph to print the full charts to pdf, then viewing them through EFB's library module, and they look the deal. EFB's active moving map depiction is stripped, I know.

Now this is getting interesting, I never though Navigraph deliberately would leave stuff out, now I'll compare Navigraphs plates with maps from official AIP's where available, as I fly there, and check if there is info missing.

I dont understand why you are getting upset? I didnt try to persuade you to get the Aivlasoft, I was just saying what I know having owned the product. I do like the product I find it quite useful. Would I but it again? Probably not, not for $70 anyway.

I would be a lot happier if I found a good program to use to get it on to an Ipad. I understand Air Display has an fps impact?

I did say "it's 'Your' choice!"

Real charts have all the necessary information and they're free. that's "my" choice!!!!!

I also use real charts.

I'm done now, that's my choice...

So isn't there any way of updating FSX so that the Aivlasoft EFB then shows more accurate or real world info?

Whats the use of up to date charts when FS doesnt follow with its frequencies, locations of beacons, etc ?

You still will be out of sync, with a chart not matching what you will find in the sim.

And then there is the ATC issues..

The answer to that is to update the sim's bgl files!!

And how do we do that ? is there a download for it already ?

Silly me.. of course.. I saw it earlier and applied it.. thanks for the headsup.

Awesome, so applying this update, will bring the source of where EFB is getting its data up to date, thus the 2 will be far more current and realistic shall we say?

Did I get that right?
