LAX - Singapore?

Featured Replies

I recently took a Singapore Airways flight from LAX to Singapore (17+ hrs.!!). This was on an A340-500 configured for business class only. It's my understanding that Singapore Air will discontinue this run sometime this month. I heard that they were trading in their 340s for 380s and the 380s didn't have the range. Could a 777 do this route?

The LR for sure !

Yeah the LR could.

I don't think there will be many A340's in service come the end of the year. Virgin Atlantic are in the process of preparing their A340-600's back to lease.

And those airlines who wish to remain as a sole Airbus operator will most like replace the A345/6 with the A350.

A<380 love at first flight

Most Airlines are trying to get rid of the A340 now, trading them for other aircraft. The 777 would definitely do the route SIN-LAX. Especially the 777-200LR! (Set Longest non-stop flight record)

The interesting question is usually not whether a plane can do a certain route, but how many paying passengers it can still take. A 737-900 can do Seattle - Amsterdam non-stop given the right weather conditions, but you can't take more than one or two passengers.

I'm more of a Boeing guy but I fear the 340-500 becoming extinct. It will become a rare sight in the next 3-6 years.

Airbus only stopped producing the A340 in 2012, why does it seem so doomed in this thread already?

It will become a rare sight in the next 4-8 years.

I've never seen it to begin with. The 346, however...

Keep in mind only 34 340-500 were built compared to the 218 343s

The first Airbus I flew on was a 340-500 from ETD. It is a great aircraft indeed. IMO the 345 has the right size and right engine thrust unlike its siblings (343 and 346). Wasn't too long or too short. The 343 seems like it's struggling to even take-off.
