Yep, the ORBX stuff is a bit too dark for my taste as well, but I just make a monitor profile for it and they'll shine as bright as I like.

Did you ever look out of a window when flying ?

It always looks more dark and grey

i wonder how many gigs of hdd we will need for this, and the price of course.

Ca 5 gigs, and $195.

Always? I've been doing aerial photography for 15 years, so I know how thongs look like from above. Color and light depends on the weather conditions and altitude - period. It is not a constant like in FSX.

From what I have read FTX Global will be textures only. It will not include landclass or any other terrain enhancement such as roads/railways/rivers/coastlines/mesh, which you would normally get in an FTX region such as PNW. So it will work alongside your SceneryTech landclass rather than replace it.

You're right. I remember the article I read earlier this week stating FTXWOrld would just be textures and nothing more. I didn't put two and two together that landclass like add-ons included more than texture themselves. I understand where some in this thread were saying the quality of the pictures of Norway were aided by Scenery Tech's add-on.

So as a summary will it be worth the 190.00 or not?

In sunny weather colors will be more bright and with more color but the higher you get the more grey and dark it becomes.

With an overcast colors are more dark and less colored to start with.

Therefore I made 2 SweetFX presets. One for cloudy and the other one for sunny weather.

Imagine a FS and the colors / brightness / contrast of the ground would depend on weather conditions....

Thanks simmerhead for the comparision.

Bodo is the place where I had to land yesterday after my left PMDG's JS41 Garret died en route to Trondheim, so I will rent a Piper Cub and take a look at the vicinity shortly :)

Unfortunately with the 'non-ORBX' textures.

I'll go for it - the price is steep, but I fly worldwide, so I will benefit from it as much as I will benefit from FS Global Ultimate

Shoot... Why did they have to start with showing pictures from Norway... I've been waiting for years for some good Norway scenery. Of course it's still very generic and all but the shots with FTX World do look better... Still, some 160 euro's for a few textures...

@Simmerhead: do I understand only the FTX World shots contain UTX Europe, SceneryTech and Scenic II? And the FSX shots are really completely default?

Simmerhead already said that. In the end, it's not how it looks, it's how we perceive it. And at lower altitudes, it's definitely darker than anything I've ever seen from an aircraft.

The difference between a picture and how we perceive a subject is well known to photographers. A picture taken under incandescent light is orange without color correction, and one taken under fluorescent light is green. But when we looked at the original subject,we didn't see these colors.

I look at trees on the ground, they're always lighter than what the Orbx screen shots show. Even if a photo of the trees showed them to be dark (and I've discovered they don't), they have to be rendered the same way I perceive them or they will look unnatural.

After Microsoft Flight had bland and colorless autogen, and trees way too dark, I started looking at videos of actual flights to compare and found that real scenery just wasn't like that. Especially with flights over the same terrain in Hawaii. They certainly didn't look like photos I've taken from airplanes.

Terrain is going to have to render properly under 5000 feet, as that's when you'll be looking at it the most. If it's off at 30,000 feet, the difference will be much less noticeable.

The FTX shots are using Scenerytech only, and my shots are pure FSX. Believe me, Scenerytech is a waste of money. It might work for someone who don't know much about Norwegian geography.

Ultimate Terrain is the best, but still not very accurate.

Doesn't UT include just roads, bridges, shorelines etc while Scenerytech is about landclass, texture placement?

I know, I was just curious. Since I love to have good Norwegian scenery I own UTX Europe and SceneryTech Europe, however things only improved after installing that same Scenic scenery you posted earlier on. I'd like to see a comparison of Norway with FTX World and Norway with UTX and Scenic (including the available mesh)!

I also agree with SceneryTech being useless for Norway: just last week I left Orbx scenery for the first time since ages and moved to Norway (what a coincidence ^_^ ). After seeing how crap it looked by default I installed SceneryTech and indeed, things looked like crap still... I didn't install Scenic etx. yet because it involves a bit more work, but luckily I documentend everything. (In case anyone wants to install that Norwegian scenery and doesn't understand the Norwegian information, let me know and i will post the relevant information: it's a bit complicated.)

Right, but UTX also has landclass afaik. SceneryTech is landclass only so better, at least so you should think.

No, UT includes landclass and some custom textures as well in addition to roads, shorelines, rivers, lakes, islands and then some.

Scenerytech is just landclass using the default textures.

The problem with landclass products that cover large areas is that they have been automated, so they tend to be both innacurate in terms of placement and type of vegetation.

I'd like to see a comparison of Norway with FTX World and Norway with UTX and Scenic (including the available mesh)!

Me too. With the FTX Global textures there will probably come a new freeware landclass made by native Norwegians that will be as accurate as landclass can be.

Hopefully ORBX gets some knowledagble betatesters for their upcoming Norway scenery. It is a country with huge variation in geography and vegetation from inland to coast, and north to south, so it's not easy to do.

Hope it's the new SIM720 team that will do the Norway scenery as there are a couple of devs on that team that come from Norway. So they should maybe get it right.

Looking forward to 2014

Sounds good! Let's hope their geography knowledge is as good as their computer skills :)
