January 21, 201313 yr As others have said, 7 years on has produced a plethora of content for FSX. Just about anything you can think of regarding a flying experience has been created for it, short of animated passengers and flight crew (though I think there's some planes out there that have a waving stew if memory serves. ). From scenery, to aircraft, to cockpit environment enhancement, to weather, and more, there's enough stuff out there to tailor FSX to your every whim. True, its code doesn't seem to want to adapt to the way hardware has developed over the last few years, but there are still ways to get some enjoyment out of it as long as the right balance of detail vs. performance is struck according to your tastes. Prepar3D is the evolution of MS's commercial ESP product, which was their version of the FSX engine for commercial training applications. It's produced by Lockheed, who purchased the license to develop it, and they've enhanced it for use in multi-role training. On the surface, it's still pretty much FSX, but users report better performance out of it, and some of the bigger named 3rd party addon developers are releasing their products for it. You can get it under a "student license", which assumes you're enrolled in some sort of flight training, for around $50. I'm hesitant to mention X-Plane, since this is the FSX forum and it seems to be a hot button issue of late, but it is out there and worth a look. Compared to FSX, it's pretty lean on the addon availability, but some 3rd party developers are beginning to give it some attention. Most notably Aerosoft and Carenado, but PMDG is also in very early exploratory stages on making something for it. I'd recommend giving the demo a go to see if it's something you'd like. Some love it and some don't, but you're the best judge of your own experience. Despite the gloom and doom associated with MS's decision to end support for FSX and their botched model for FLIGHT!, simming as a whole is trucking right along and there's plenty of variety out there to tickle your fancy. January 21, 201313 yr See my post on OOMs I just made. My advice to you mate is don't even bother. I'd say save your money, come back in a year and see where XPlane is at. FSX is a lost cause. Strange, i have NEVER had a OOM with my hardware and Word Not Allowed tuned FSX. Hardly a CTD once in a while. http://#####.wordpress.com/fsx-software-and-hardware-guide/ Xplane better within a year? I hope so, but i doubt it, it's only getting better in very tiny steps. Look here what i wrote about Xplane: http://forum.avsim.n...75#entry2571366 For the pure joy of great flight dynamics (but NO mixture control, ATC, radio's, other countries, real weather, winter textures ... yet) with some GA aircraft or glider and very nice Swiss photoreal scenery, and a 50-60 fps framerate with NO stutters: try AeroflyFS, besides FSX/P3D. With kind regards, Bart S.

January 21, 201313 yr Thanks for the replies. They're some pretty impressive videos, the scenery has come along way! Bimmercop, yeah I was aware about MS scrapping plans to develop beyond FSX, but I guess it still looks like a lot of fun. Xplane looks interesting, but I think I find the detail in aircraft add-on like PMDG most appealing. Eyecandy is just a bonus. Thanks heaps this is a 727 vc in xplane10, try it sometime....you will like :good: http://youtu.be/XT1MdVpejaY http://youtu.be/MImwf2zecBI

January 21, 201313 yr :aggressive: :t0106: Now now, fellow X-Planers.... much as we get wrankled over FSXers coming to the X-Plane forums to tell us how superior FSX is, the least we could do is respect the sanctity of this forum. :Peace: "No matter how eloquent you are or how solidly and firm you've built your case, you will never win in an argument with an idiot, for he is too stupid to recognize his own defeat." ~Anonymous.
January 21, 201313 yr Hey there, I was a flightsim enthusiast some years ago, FS9 and PMDG being my main setup. With the arrival of FSX in 2006, I had started my real flight training and every last cent went into that, thus not simming as much and not upgrading my software. Now that I'm flying commercially career wise, I'm now starting to develop an interest in flight simming again, go figure:-). I remember reading the forums just after FSX was released, and remember reading some very negative posts from users, mainly with the performance issues. So my main question is, how is FSX now? Has it progressed a lot since its release in 2006? Are simmers finding their hardware can cope with the FSX engine, and the add-ons. Can users max out their settings along with advanced add-ons and get good performance out of it? Tristan welcome back Tristan.... I enjoyed reading your post.... it's like watching Back to the Future :-) too much, too soon....
January 21, 201313 yr Kanwar - I feel for you. Making statements like that makes your frustration obvious. But FSX is still the best sim around. A lot of simmers do not agree with you. I'm running FSX on a 30" monitor and I've had no problems whatsoever - running with UK extreme scenery with both the NGX and the Airbus X Extended. FSX in my view has improved much with so much scenery and complex aircraft. However if you are getting so many OOM errors I'd also look to a possible hardware problem. Take heed of the advice in your thread re the 1.5Gb video card. Try a hardware swap with your card or RAM sticks. I know its an extreme step but you could also have a problem with your mobo. Something isn't quite right on your system. FSX isn't the problem. Since getting my rig I've had no OOMs at all - even in really high density areas with the NGX or the AXE. I've had a few systems, and maybe I've been lucky - FSX has been great on all of them. I've got to agree with those youtube videos. Many of them show what can be achieved by many. ..and some of them have a much lower spec system than yours. Best of luck. Tristan - go for it. If you have a good system you can have a ball with FSX. FSX has a lot of mileage yet. There's nothing else - yet. January 21, 201313 yr Yes I agree. Go for FSX. On today's computers you can get good results. FSX is still way ahead of XP in many ways. And no I'm not hating on XP (I tried the demo) it's just the truth. Have fun Lee
