January 21, 201313 yr Just remember that many youtube videos have been digitally enchanced in video editing software, so they don't always represent realiy. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
January 21, 201313 yr All I've got to say about her video is that the 727 has got to be the most beautiful plane ever to fly the skies. Never found a satisfactory one made for FSX, unfortunatley
January 21, 201313 yr Steve has made some amazing discoveries vis a vi DX10 (I would never go back to dx9) yep FSX is here to stay. What discoveries?

January 22, 201313 yr 3rd party developers like PMDG, Carenado, REX and many others have really kept FSX alive and going. So the sim still remains fun, interesting and realistic.
January 22, 201313 yr Kanwar - I feel for you. Making statements like that makes your frustration obvious. But FSX is still the best sim around. A lot of simmers do not agree with you. I know =(. Honestly I wish I didn't agree with me either. It's just my opinion though - I personally have found FSX to be ultimately lacking. Until a viable replacement comes along I'll make due. I would caution the OP about investing too much in this platform at this time given its age.
January 22, 201313 yr Yes I agree. Go for FSX. On today's computers you can get good results. FSX is still way ahead of XP in many ways. And no I'm not hating on XP (I tried the demo) it's just the truth. Have fun Lee fsx is a complete finished product, xp10 is not.....it's still in beta.
January 23, 201313 yr See my post on OOMs I just made. My advice to you mate is don't even bother. I'd say save your money, come back in a year and see where XPlane is at. FSX is a lost cause. FSX is the dominant platform in 2013 by a large margin - so I guess most simmers and developers disagree with your 'lost cause' statement. Hardware was an issue in 2006 for FSX. For those willing to invest in modern 2013-spec hardware, it's not a big issue. X-plane remains interesting and imho is worth the relatively small investment that it takes to buy into this evolving platform. But FSX has had a briliant last 12-18 months (ngx, opus etc etc) and no reason to think that this progress is stopping any time soon. January 23, 201313 yr FSX is the dominant platform in 2013 by a large margin - so I guess most simmers and developers disagree with your 'lost cause' statement. I honestly don't care who disagrees with it. If I were him I would avoid investing in it. Eventually you will hit a wall and with some of the newer HD addons coming out and the demand for them increasing that wall is getting closer for more people as has been highlighted in my other thread.
January 23, 201313 yr To summarize some of the stuff that I would like you to see.. Youtube "PMDG 737 ngx, FS2crew, Carenado, REX +overdrive, Flytampa DUBAI" I have a full list of things to watch, if you are not hooked yet
January 23, 201313 yr Shocked to see so many unaware of the DX10 fix. You people are seriously losing out on the real FSX. So simple too. You can have DX10 up and running in under 10 minutes.
January 23, 201313 yr As others have said, 7 years on has produced a plethora of content for FSX. Just about anything you can think of regarding a flying experience has been created for it, short of animated passengers and flight crew (though I think there's some planes out there that have a waving stew if memory serves. ). From scenery, to aircraft, to cockpit environment enhancement, to weather, and more, there's enough stuff out there to tailor FSX to your every whim. True, its code doesn't seem to want to adapt to the way hardware has developed over the last few years, but there are still ways to get some enjoyment out of it as long as the right balance of detail vs. performance is struck according to your tastes. Prepar3D is the evolution of MS's commercial ESP product, which was their version of the FSX engine for commercial training applications. It's produced by Lockheed, who purchased the license to develop it, and they've enhanced it for use in multi-role training. On the surface, it's still pretty much FSX, but users report better performance out of it, and some of the bigger named 3rd party addon developers are releasing their products for it. You can get it under a "student license", which assumes you're enrolled in some sort of flight training, for around $50. I'm hesitant to mention X-Plane, since this is the FSX forum and it seems to be a hot button issue of late, but it is out there and worth a look. Compared to FSX, it's pretty lean on the addon availability, but some 3rd party developers are beginning to give it some attention. Most notably Aerosoft and Carenado, but PMDG is also in very early exploratory stages on making something for it. I'd recommend giving the demo a go to see if it's something you'd like. Some love it and some don't, but you're the best judge of your own experience. Despite the gloom and doom associated with MS's decision to end support for FSX and their botched model for FLIGHT!, simming as a whole is trucking right along and there's plenty of variety out there to tickle your fancy. Welcome back! This! ^^ Always remember to Find Your FUN! -Bob
January 23, 201313 yr Hi Tristan, welcome back! Much like you I took a hiatus from FS2004 for about 5 years and just last year invested in an FSX computer system and bit the bullet. It's quite amazing how far it has come, especially when you have been away from it and you see all of the developments in one fell swoop. The addons are what keeps it going and improving, of course, FSX itself hasn't changed. But the hardware has caught up and now it is possible to run pretty much anything with a smooth experience. The limitation now is the 32 bit code and the 4gb memory limitation that come with it so you just have to manage your memory usage. But it is doable without taking away from the immersion. It is a whole new world from what it was 5 years ago!
January 24, 201313 yr Seeing this has turned into a FSX vs X-Plane thread, I have to admit the planes in XPX are very nice and detailed. Just XPX is not there yet. It needs quite a bit of improvements. It holds promise, but who knows what happens with the XPX lawsuit and how that affects development. Ill tell you one thing, the day we see a platform that can handle HD everything, with realistic levels of traffic, no wind shifts, having TAT while climbing below zero all the time and in the minus 40s and 50s at altitude, under realistic ATC control and no license wording disputes, with FPS at a consistent above 30 with high settings while maintaining relatively normal CPU temps, oh and unlimited access to RAM, I dont think I will be flying it, as I'll be in the hospital suffering a heart attack from actually seeing it come to fruition. Meantime Ill save my heart and enjoy FSX now and the awesome products in the past months as well as the ones in the coming months. January 24, 201313 yr Look in the DX10 Forum here on AVSIM. A DX10 Shader fix. Best regards, Jim Steve's DX10 fix has certainly pumped some new life into FSX, fixed a lot of problems and may open up a lot more 3rd party doors. I don't really understand why this has to be a XP10 vs. FSX -- anyone that has enjoyed FSX will enjoy XP10 for many of the same reasons and plus or minus a few reason in each. Considering the cost of XP10 is about the same as the cost of one aircraft from PMDG. I look at my purchase of XP10 as an investment in the future of flight simulation ... not an exclusion of anything else. FSX, XP10, P3D can all live together and co-exist ... the more enthusiastic of us will most likely have all 3 products (such as myself). It's all good ... there really is no need to pick a side, enjoy each product for what it is and does for you. Rob
