REX vs. AS

Featured Replies

Okay, I just forked out the $ for REX; now I wonder if it was the best way to go. What do I get with Active Sky for an additional $50? Thanks--just having some buyer's remorse.

After some research I think I see how the 2 add-ons are different. But would still like to hear your views. Thx!

Flight 1 as I remember

Lots of people own both, and typically use REX for the textures, and AS for the weather engine. According to the gossip, OpusFSX's weather engine is even better, but I never owned it so I can't confirm that.

In FSX I used AS2012 for both the engine and the textures and was pretty content.

Many people like to use REX for textures and AS for the weather engine (EDIT: as metalmike posted while I was typing this). I did that for a number of years. I'm currently using FEX textures (with the freeware HDE sky textures), and experimenting with both AS and OpusFSX for weather.

There used to be complaints about the REX weather engine but I gather the new version is improved - I'm sure people who are using it can fill you in.

REX for Textures, AS for the weather engine.

I don't have AS, but I know the weather engine is a bit better than REX.

But when it comes to textures, REX takes the crown.

I used AS2012 for the weather, REX for water/runway/taxiway textures, HDEv2 for the sky texturess (sometimes the clouds also) and FEX for the clouds usually. In hindsight I probably could have skipped getting REX since I don't use more than half what it offers, but its a popular addon so I got it and tried it out. I think I am done buying any more weather/texture replacement programs going forward if more should happen to come out.

Hello,

I own all "the big ones": REXe, AS2012, OpusFSX.

Currently only AS2012 works with PMDG's aircraft without problems. The other 2 are causing problems with winds an temperature (on my system).

I only have used REXe weather for a short while. Based on my testing, the overcast conditions were not close enough to the other products to warrant more testing. YMMV.

Opus has the most "realistic" feel. By that I mean that what you see from your pilot's seat, matches extremely well to the METARs. The wind problems on my system are so bad, that I'm unable to use Opus for weather. Again YMMV.

Here's my current way of using all of these three:

REXe: Textures

Opus: Camera

AS2012: Weather

- Jarkko

REX: texture addon (clouds, skies, water) with weather engine

AS2012: weather engine with textures (clouds, skies, water)

OpusFSX: weather engine with camera functions (easy setup of views and motion effects)

FEX: an older texture addon (like REX but without the weather engine) that hasn't really been really updated for a few years

I use REX for textures and OpusFSX for weather. I own ASE (the version before AS2012) but OpusFSX is faster and better (imho). If you plan to get OpusFSX in the future (which you should ^_^ ) you don't have to regret buying REX at all. Some people prefer FEX for textures (which I also own) but REX is more then fine with me (as long as I don't use HD stuff which looks fake) and at least REX is still being updated. I haven't heard many people say they like the AS textures more so I felt no need to get AS2012 at all.

Anyway, if you really bought REX at Flight1 and you didn't do so more then 30 days ago, you can get a refund without questions asked.

I have both (AS and REX), I use both. REX mostly for GA flying and AS for heavy iron. I also use textures from both addons, why limit the choice. I wouldn't say one is much better than the other - I think you can't miss with either.

Only thinks I can think of are common sense and respect to the hours of work the developer has but into their product.

To be honest, I don't know how the refund works.

I have REXE+ (haven't downloaded SP1) and I had problems with the wx engine. I got Active Sky and am using it for the weather engine without a problem. I still use the REX textures...the Active Sky ones are not very good at this point.

When you ask for a refund you get a mail with instructions how to uninstall the software. That's it. It's very reassuring (don't know the right word for it but it's GOOD) knowing there are still companies out there who trust their customers...

And the thing that's stopping you from still using the software is called conscience. Everyone has one, so I am told.
