FlightMap is currently designed for 10 inch tablets. I should be getting a 7 inch tablet within the next month or so to start working on support for that size.

I’m working hard to get the next FlightMap update out to my beta testers. I’m nearly done with the full GPS flight plan feature. I’ve also updated the application to work with 4×3 aspect ratio tablets like the HP TouchPad. Hopefully the beta will be out to my testers within the week and if all goes well released to the market next week.

More information is always available on my blog at

FlightMap version 1.9 has been release to the Play Store. It should be rolling out over the next 24 to 48 hours to everyone. This is a pretty big update with the following features:

- Full FSX and P3D flight plan support in GPS mode

- Course To Steer (CTS) added to GPS mode display

- Estimated time to waypoint (ETE) added to Adhoc flight plan mode (NAV mode)

- Improved the launch page for ease of use as well as other fixes for launching the app

- 10 inch 4×3 tablet support like the HP TouchPad. 4×3 tablets don’t get the Gauges

In 7 inch tablet news I have purchased a Nexus 7 and it is on it's way to me very soon. Version 2.0 will be dedicated to adding 7 inch tablet support.

I don't currently own the hardware that would be required to do iOS development. It's rather expensive to get up and running for development on that platform. I won't say never but it's not on my radar at this time.

Wow this looks great. I have the nexus 7 so can't wait for that version.

Just a note- the just released nexus 7 is full HD and you mentioned the original version for 10" would be called HD. Just an FYI.

Also I know u said working off 4G for phones is a lot more difficult but is it in the plans? Checking the flight over the internet would be awesome if you had to go out.

Howdy,

I've actually decided to build the 7 inch version into the existing FlightMap app so I won't be changing the name. One version for all tablets.

I do force the android side of things to validate that wifi is running and pull the wifi address. The big problem with the current implementation is mainly the complexity of the setup for the end user. The user would have to make sure their computer is accessible from internet (has a valid ip address) or is accessible by another means. The network would also have to support UDP. AutoDiscovery would not be possible so the user would need to know and provide both server and client ip addresses. There is just a lot to make sure is right so I've not allowed it to even be attempted right now.

I have thought about doing a relay though. Have FlightConnect push to a cloud service that FlightMap could then pull from. The big problem with that becomes the speed of updates and latency. I would not want to make this the primary way FlightMap was updated. Right now it's incredibly fast and reliable and this other method would be a lot slower. It is something I may look at improving on though.

I'm just thinking outloud here but maybe I could have multiple modes for FlightMap. In the local network mode the current implementation would provide the high speed realtime updates but only work on wifi. In the alternate mode, not sure what I would call it, it could update much slower and pull from the cloud and would work anywhere. I could even store the flights and allow them to be overlaid as a history or something. Something to think about anyway. Perhaps that's a different application. FlightHistory or something like that.

I've made a lot of progress on the 7 inch tablet support in FlightMap. So much so in fact that I just released the first beta to my current testers. I am looking for 2 more beta testers who have 7 inch tablets. I own the new nexus 7 (2013) so I need testers with other devices. If you are interested fill out the form on my blog.
