Will the SDK provide enough access to create a 2D panel?

Featured Replies

Hi, everyone,

On the Captain Sim forum, in a similar discussion about 2D cockpits, someone stated that he contacted the maker of the JB Panel, Greg Wilson, and that Greg said he doesn't want his panel or component parts, including gauge placement information, to be uploaded anywhere.

Its on avsim... So does that mean we cant download it and use it for ouselves on the 777X? I did that with the captain sim

Hi, captainsazzman and everyone,

I can't speak for Greg Wilson. I don't know him at all. Just wanted to give everyone a heads-up before someone put in the effort to develop a PMDG T7 2D panel for distribution using his files as a starting point. He mentioned UPloading, not DOWNloading though. It seems to me that the best course is for anyone who has any questions to contact Greg Wilson.

The quote stated to be from Greg is on the Captain Sim Support Forum:>777 Captain>777 Wish List, topic: "...there was a 2D panel as well", page 5. You probably need to own some Captain Sim product to view it, as do I (for better or worse).

Ok we can work around this... Someone can go ahead and experiment with setting up the JB panel with the PMDG 777 and then post INSTRUCTIONS on how to do it. Those willing to go through with it may then proceed to avsim to download and apply the mod via said INSTRUCTIONS?

Sorry did that make sense?

Why not try to prove that the concept works with the 737 first?

@@captainsazzman So you don't want to fly the VC?!..........

Iwant to fly the VC but I also want to contribute to the development of a 2D compromise for those of us that dont want to; so that they can at least find a way to enjoy the 777 as much as we will

i dont understand why individuals comment with why or why not to use a 2D or 3D cockpit... if its someones preference that it is just that,

FYI - as long as you truly do use your own artwork (this means not screenshotting our VC and using it as the basis for it etc) then it appears that this will actually be allowed under the SDK and EULA - I mentioned it to RSR the other day. You'd have to create your own panel.cfg and everything and it would need to be submitted to us for verification that it does not contain our copyrighted art first. You will also be responsible for supporting it - I mean that, I will literally forward support tickets referencing it to you.

We realize there's people who want 2D over anything and if someone's really willing to do a project like this as an SDK based addon, we're willing to see where it goes.

I don't reckon my work would be good enough for distribution, but this reassures me that I could give it a go, at least for my own fun.

And it sounds like a good project to keep me out of mischief.

Thanks very much for the openness.

For me the biggest problem is how to separate the cockpit forward outside view from the vc cockpit, having the 2D pop ups is great but I use a projector for outside view and so far looks like the 777 is dead in the water for me....I do not know how much effort it would have been to have made a simple to D panel so that forward outside view could have been undocked and moved with out the VC cockpit ....

Sorry, if this has been asked before:

Won't the 777 ship with some predefined, enlarged panel views (in VC) which aren't vulnerable to those gravity/acceleration/turbulence issues?

The NGX has a number of partial views, from which you can easily operate knobs, switches and control panels.

If no 2D, I will do like a lot of people that I know not be buying it. I like virtual when taxiing but prefer 2D when flying.

While you are entitled to your opinion, and entitled to exercise your opinion by not purchasing the aircraft, I must point out that stating said opinion is like me going up to someone selling their product on DVD/Bluray and telling them that they'll be losing out by not selling on VHS....

Welcome to 2013.  Hardware has caught up to the good life, and it not horribly expensive.  The only reason people have to not use the VC is a resistance to change.

The fact that PMDG provides preset viewpoints that essentially face the necessary components head on - emulating a 2D view - kinda blows the whole "but I like 2D better" stance out of the water.

I was in this boat until 737NGX - first VC that was truly usable in FSX.

I'll admit that I was in that boat as well, but the JS41 was what pushed me over.  Heck, my old laptop (HP dv7, so I'm not talking about a gaming laptop here) ran that reasonably well.

In the past, it was a legitimate argument.  Now, not so much, especially given the caliber of VCs that PMDG creates (as has been proven with the JS41 and NGX).
