What do you think about a 42" LED TV as a display?

It would help me understand your system if you could post details in your profile.

I just updated my system specs so you can check it out, Avsim deleted my profile accidentally a few months ago.

You should go back and read this entire thread.  I originally thought 42 inches was insanely big.  Even when I was a teenager 20 years ago I didn't like sitting in the front row at the movies.  42 inches is still easily all within your field of view at 3 feet.  Don't get me wrong, it's huge, just not "too big."  In fact I could see someone being happy with a 47 inch display, but since mine is facing into a corner, it's the biggest that will fit.  If you're coming from a monitor I'm sure you'll be pleased going to a 32 inch, but while you're at it you should seriously consider at least 37 inches.

Watching movies at that distance isn't as big a deal as you think.  In fact it's fantastic, especially 3D stuff.   It's not as if I like things being mega up close and plastered right in my face.  It's just big and nice.

Oh and yes, 1080 limited at 24 for 3D.  Actually if I could get a smooth solid locked 24 FPS in ALL circumstances I could live with it.  But in real heavy areas with tons of AI in the NGX and soupy weather I dip into the upper teens a little, although mostly it stays locked around 30 (unlimited in P3D and limited in Inspector).  But 3D at 1080 just bogs down a little too much in heavy conditions.

I visited my retailer today with a memory stick of screenshots of the PMDG 737 panel and Concorde's. I also included two very high def photos for normal image assessment.

My first view was of the Sony Bravia 32" LED Smart TV and my initial impression was "wow". I was very impressed. I then viewed the same images on the Sony 40" and although it was impressive the screen is just too big for my room. Here in the UK houses are quite small so compromises have to be made. 40" wouldn't have allowed me space for other FS components.

I decided on the 32" and it's now sitting on the dining room table until the DVI-HDMI cable arrives in the next day or two. I'm happy I've made the right choice. The other reason I chose 32" is because it can double-up as a TV in my bedroom one day.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Ray, Enjoy!

If you are like me, you'll feel that you just got a new Flight Simulator and you'll want to re-fly

all your favorite routes.

I'm assuming you have already set WideViewAspect=True in your fsx.cfg..

Thanks Bert. I have to be patient until the DVI-HDMI cable arrives. I'll check that change (my 24" is widescreen) but most of my flying is with FS9 until a PC upgrade this autumn.

I can remember being wowed by a 24" display so I'm sure the bigger display will have a similar impact.

I'm sure you'll be quite wowed again!  Have fun!

42" Vizio stereo 3d tv flying in 3d is awesome, but do realize 3d stereo 1080 fps is limited. Use 3d stereo in photoscenery with Carendo ga planes like c-172 and c-152 as anything complex not smooth engough to fly. Without 3d stereo and regular 1080p wide-view tweak makes it easier with trackir to perform traffic patterns. Like 3d and non-3d aspect of 42in. Starting too see with lots of money using three or more 42" displays to fly.

I'm attaching a photo of my system with the new 32" Sony LED TV. The forward view isn't particularly good due to the brightness. The Sony is too high on that stand. It needs to come down a few inches so I'm looking level or slightly down.

I've ordered a 3M stand that has 3 removable feet so the height can be adjusted. A bonus is the GoFlight MCP can be placed on the stand so it's at eye level.

Over to the left is the old 24" Dell display showing Project Magenta Boeing display, its CDU and ShowText for Radar Contact. Over to the right is my GoFlight rack. Just off to the left is my laptop for running FS Flight Keeper and Active Sky weather.

The larger display definitely adds to the realism but I'm still having to make picture adjustments to compensate for a larger display being restricted to 1920*1080. I'm certain I've made the right decision by not going for a 40" screen.

Ray, looks good!

Again, if the TV is too bright, use the nvidia Control Panel to reduce the Gamma setting..

Hi Bert,

Do the Nvidia Insector setting's have to be reapplied if you use the Nvidia Control Panel to lower gamma?

Bert,

I'm using a grey scale to set contrast and brightness. if I then adjust gamma it makes either some of the darker blocks too dark or the whiter ones flare out. The black level appears okay. I think gamma is set close to 1.

Hi Ray,

I love your setup shown and I hope you dont mind me asking a few questions.

What plane are you using in FSX?

How much does PM cost?

They are independent of each other, as best I know.

If your TV is not too bright for comfort, there is no need.

My LED monitor is too bright, and burns out my eyeballs.

So, Gamma to 0.8 first, that gets the level down to a comfortable level

for viewing close up - adjust contrast and brightness second.

Hi Christopher,

I'm still flying with FS9. I do have FSX installed but rarely use it because my PC is 5 years old. I fly the PMDG737 when using Project Magenta. That version did allow you to disable the PMDG autopilot and other functions. That isn't possible with FSX. I also fly the PSS Concorde but PM isn't running for that of course. I just use the Concorde panel.

Project Magenta is far from cheap. It cost me £291 10 years ago for the Boeing Suite but all updates are free. I don't have a home built cockpit which PM is aimed at but it does allow me to fly with a full forward view with all instruments running on a second PC via WideFS. That does help fluidity a lot.

I'm completely hooked on my Sony Bravia 40" HDTV for FSX, but I'd be even happier if I could get a resolution to complement the size. Anyone know of any TV/Monitor in the 40" range offering 2560 X 1440 or 2560x1600?

odourboy,

You won't find any TV with a resolution higher than 1920*1080. That's full HD so there's no need for higher with TV.

As far as monitors go the highest I've seen is an Asus 4K 32" display with 3840 x 2160 resolution. Price? A cool £3000.

For 2560 x 1440 the size limit seems to be around 30".
