June 17, 201312 yr Moderator Excellent programme. Looking forward to tomorrow night's. Here's a link to the BBC's Airport Live site. Hopefully available to non-UK visitors. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p018t3xgTo gain access to the control tower made the show. I never fail to be amazed at the calm professionalism of the controllers.Thursday's show should be interesting. Dan tries to land a A380 in a simulator. I hope they can achieve 30fps and the Ai behave themselves. Ray (Cheshire, England). June 17, 201312 yr If you fancy a go at ATC at Heathrow, why not join VATUK? www.vatsim-uk.co.uk Regards Callum McLoughlin

June 17, 201312 yr Moderator If you fancy a go at ATC at Heathrow, why not join VATUK? www.vatsim-uk.co.uk Regards I tried it many years ago when dial-up was the only connection. Comms was very hit and miss and apparently I caused several go-arounds after I lost my connection and couldn't respond to instructions. Since then I have migrated to Radar Contact but it's something I would like to try one day. Ray (Cheshire, England). June 17, 201312 yr Ray, I'm sure we can get you up and running. Were you at TAS last year? Callum McLoughlin
June 17, 201312 yr Moderator Ray, I'm sure we can get you up and running. Were you at TAS last year? You must forgive me but what is TAS? The Aviation Society? If so then no. Never attended that. It's something I will try but first I have to wait for the announcement on the future of Radar Contact, due on 1 July. And I'll probably need a quieter airport than EGLL for my first few flights. Ray (Cheshire, England). June 18, 201312 yr I found tonights program interesting, especially the wing vortex with the colored smoke that the aircraft flew through. They should have that at all airports. It will make plane spotting much more interesting
June 18, 201312 yr Author I found tonights program interesting, especially the wing vortex with the colored smoke that the aircraft flew through. They should have that at all airports. It will make plane spotting much more interesting Yes that was the most interesting part, aside from pointing out all the places to my girlfriend that I've planespotted from  At the end of that demonstration it looked like they were erecting "barriers" as some kind of shield against the vortices, but I noted that they didn't elaborate at all about what they were doing.
June 18, 201312 yr Managed to see tonight's one as it happened, watched last nights on YouTube. Its a really interesting program, especially for us AV geeks
June 18, 201312 yr Moderator The BBC should be congratulated on producing such an excellent series of programmes. Even for the non-geek I'm sure it will be very interesting. Just one mild criticism. They mentioned about the strange language used by ATC but then never really expanded on it other than the use of the phonetic alphabet and that British Airways' aircraft are referred to as Speedbird. What about the take-off clearance? Wind 315 at 7. I'm sure most people would recognise the second number is the wind speed but does Joe Public really know that winds from 315 are really from the NW? And why use numbers rather than NSEW etc? But other than that it's brilliant. Ray (Cheshire, England). But in general I think it's really good! And a third night of nice weather for it tonight!
