July 27, 201312 yr I'm not impressed at all by coloring/blending. Lj. Prodanovic
July 27, 201312 yr Looks better, but IMO, not $90 better. I fly XP at night and FSX can't touch that, so I think I will pass for the time being. Thanks for the comparison pics! July 27, 201312 yr Currently flying EKCH-ESSA and grabbed this screenshot just north of ESMX at FL340 and as you can see it doesn't look that thrilling to be honest and this is using GEX and UTX. To me I think some more colour would make it look better/more realistic. Would be very interesting to see what FTX Global looks like over Sweden so if anyone is doing a flight in Sweden it would be much appreciated if you could grab a screenshot.
July 27, 201312 yr From what I have seen so far I am also not impressed. Looking at the price tag I just cannot help myself.... I don't see a reasonable value for money here (and that is a VERY diplomatic way describing it...) Outside the ORBX North-America-World I use the exchange textures from Aime Leclercq. It is freeware and a big improvement over standard fsx.
July 27, 201312 yr Not really seeing that. FTXG's city tiles are much, much clearer and the desert tiles have a much less grainy look and more natural coloring. What gives the impression of looking better is we assume that Mogadishu should be a blank desert with dusty roads. It's not. Looking at pictures of Mogadishu, it seems the deep green mixed in with the desert is actually realistic and the city having green tress is as well. Bit grainy but it's one of the view that showed the north part of the city. I'm definitely getting FTX Global, but in this particular case I actually think GEX looks a little better. The problem in places like Somalia is that the terrain doesn't conform perfectly to a particular region. Most of Somalia is part of the FSX Africa Central region, so those types of urban textures get called, and they don't look exactly right. Somalia is actually more Middle East then Africa, but it is nevertheless a bit of both, which FSX just can't render accurately. Hopefully, ORBX's openLC will fix things like this. They can modify the regions file for particular areas and call more appropriate textures. They also say that they will include even more custom textures for the openLC areas, so they should be able to render places like Somalia more accurately. Here you go, taken near ESMX (the second shot looks back to the airport). I couldn't get as high as you, though LOL This must have been at something like 11.000 ft. But anyway, things DO look greener all over (this is FTXG with UTX Europe) so I guess FTXG does a better job on that than GEX.
July 27, 201312 yr Thanks a lot Jeroen, clearly FTXG comparing our shots here shows a rather big difference and in this case I would say in favour of FTXG. So...maybe I'll open my wallet after all then... Will think it over during the evening though and guess it's no idea trying to download at this point anyway having seen all problems people have accessing the servers and with very slow downloads. Thanks again for your quick response, much appreciated!
July 27, 201312 yr Hi all, Guess it's a case of if you have a number of GEX regions then you might as well stick with them and if you haven't then it would be more cost effective to buy FTX global as it covers all regions. I have all the GEX regions and looking at the comparisons on here, some are better with GEX and some better with FTX global...........So I think I will stick for a long while yet. Happy Flying, Dave Phillips.

I have to say things do look (even) better low and slow... ^_^ And btw my copy was downloaded in 9 minutes so not everyone is having problems with the download!
July 27, 201312 yr Author Commercial Member Yeah if you ask me some dry regions are better with desertish GEX textures while most green areas look better with FTX Global... Though then some actual desert areas like Sahara and a lot of Middle East look good with FTX Global.

I didn't own any GEX region (never liked the looks of it) so for me the choice was easy. But yes, the more GEX regions you have, the harder it becomes to choose. Still, imho FTXG does look better... and it covers the entire globe. And of course it has that great autogen, which is quite important too! And don't forget those great night lights... But well, anyway, I can understand that if you own all GEX regions, this isn't a no brainer is it was for me. ^_^

July 27, 201312 yr It's not just about "official" support, either. Their newer aircraft releases include a special built-in check that will disable the entire VC if it detects you're running it in P3D. I'm perfectly fine with developers not officially supporting P3D, however deliberately blocking the sim is a totally different thing. I was being a little facetious in my original reply. Flight One is going to make you pay for entirely new versions of their products if you want to use them with Prepar3d; there is no other logical reason for disabling VC support in the manner they're implementing. They intend to make add-ons works with P3D, but they don't want customers being able to port from one sim to another. More cash in F1's pocket this way, you see. All about unbridled greed, but then Flight One took the cue directly from the Flight! business model. Hey, it worked out great for Microsoft though, right?
July 27, 201312 yr One thing I think is worth mentioning speaking about Flight 1 and how they do business is they offer 30 days refund guarantee, that is really great and I wish more companies would do the same. In this case for instance it would be great to be able to buy FTXG and if not happy or if I think the improvement over GEX isn't big enough to justify the price I could simply ask for a refund.

Paid with a credit card?...You can always fight the charges if what you purchased is not what you expected.
