I built a new system and started re-installing in late January, and I'm still not done.  And I'm trying to be restrained - sticking with an only-the-best policy, and trying to keep things simple.

So apologies if I over-reacted - blame it on Post-Traumatic Re-Install Syndrome...

LOL

No need at all for apologies btw: no offence or whatever was taken. ^_^ I am enjoying myself to much to be offended by anything right now. :P

If you used the freeware Norway scenery and it was subsequently broken by FTXG, what is wrong with wanting to uninstall FTXG right away?

Just to be sure: that was a fictious example, right...? Because I do use all of freeware Norway scenery and FTXG only improved it. A lot. (Don't want people thinking FTXG screws up Norway!) If you DID have a problem, I'd like to know what it was so we can figure out what went wrong. ^_^

First of all molleh, I have a lot of respect for you and your posts.

But I'm not doing what you described. I might be willing to wait for the new land classes in hopes that it would be a great improvement. But I'd prefer to be able to remove the product until such is available... without resorting to a full reinstall of FSX.

The uninstaller should have shipped with the product.

You're right Hook,  I apologize for being rude.  They should have included an uninstaller.. I was kind of dumbfounded when I checked through Add/Remove Programs and didn't see it in there. But at least they are making one.

Also, just since you are "stuck" for the time being, have you investigated the possibility of using a landclass as a kinda-sorta fix?  It does help a lot with the green-ness (far from perfect, but better :) )

Definitely. Although we would have missed all this fun. ^_^ But I said it before: I think everyone (even Orbx) will agree that would have been best. (And hopefully all their upcoming addons will come with an uninstaller now because up to now none did afaik.)

BTW I seem to remember that there are more addons that don't have an uninstaller (not too sure though) but I do know that a lot (if not most) uninstallers do a pretty bad job, leaving all kinds of files and junk on your hard disk and in the registry... So let's not make uninstaller holier than they are: even WITH uninstallers you often have some work left to do.

Whatever his motives,  Nick is informative , how can that be wrong?  If he's talking bunk we''ll soon hear from the other side.  Good to have the facts before parting with your money.

When I renovated my kitchen last year, I didn't tell the contractor, "Hey, whatever you do, I want to be able to revert to my present day outdated kitchen in case I decide I don't like my granite countertops, new cabinets, tile flooring and gas range." I'm sure they would have happily given me the tattered cabinets and linoleum flooring scraps to hang onto for safe keeping. Heck they may have even offered to come in and reverse all of the work free of charge. Still, I thought, "You know, I think I might like to keep this new kitchen!"

FSX looks like a new sim with FTXG installed. Why on Earth I would choose to get rid of it is beyond me.

OK,  just to extend your analogy a little.

You also did not expect your Contractor  to alter the basic construction and dimensions of your Kitchen, to specially accommodate his Custom sized units and appliances, thus preventing you from any future updates, to units that needed to be installed in industry standard spaces  & sizes of openings.

Having modified your kitchen so,  you are now basically LOCKED INTO to using his standard size unit,  or be faced with the time consuming task of reconstructing your kitchen to accommodate any other manufacturer's units.

Even more upsetting, would be if the contractor did not tell you he needed to do this to accommodate his custom units, until it was too late, and the work was done.

Might look GREAT to you today, but if you ever wanted to change it, to something more "Modern", (ie. a Newly discovered and developed  PLASMA Range,)   you are in for a lot of work !!

Got to love the SPIDER WEBs  on the woodwork, above the Oven, and the upper unit fronts,  that look like they have Coffins on them.

You weren't rude! :)

I'm not stuck, either. I took one look at the scope of the project they were doing and realized the high potential for disaster, even though it sounded exciting. I like the default textures and land classes. I know they're not perfect, but they're good enough most of the time. ORBX has a good chance of major improvements, enough to warrant a purchase. But what happens if I don't like the new trees, for example? Or any other part? I might go for a new mesh at some time, but the default textures are just fine for me right now.

Bottom line: I decided to wait and see what people said about it and check out screen shots before making any decisions.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Agreed, they as other posters said, if there was disclosure of the product making altercations to the original file, and provided un-install with the program it would resolve some of issues users will have. At least the worms are out of the can and people are finally grasping what really going on behind the eye-candy.

You say that like there's a Chinese sweatshop in the computer producing the visuals lol...

It didn't ship with an uninstaller. It doesn't display much confidence in its functionality - "However we assume people will run the uninstaller pretty soon after installing if they truly don't want FTXG on their system, in which case it will work quite well. "

I'm not NickN nor Orbx.

So no. Two wrongs don't make making crap up about competitors right.

They should of included an uninstaller. Nick shouldn't make stuff up to gin up fear and push people to his products.

You can untick them in FTX Central. ^_^ Just as the night lighting. (But that's it, though...)

Happens all the time,   -- someone contributes a technical idea or suggestion in a post,  the "Peanut Gallery Monkeys" jump all over him, - probably they have no idea what he is really talking about, but are driven by being some strange urge to drag him down in public.

The result is. that in future, that person keeps his idea to himself, and the FS Community misses out, and is left with the multitude to meaningless posts, that they see  to respond to with favor.

And Orbx should deliver what it promised when it was promised.

"What would you do with an Addon IF you had one" ?

I won't have it until I'm certain I can uninstall it if I don't like it.

Hi.  My name is Bryan.  I'm a recovering FSX user.

First it was the tweaking.  I used this tweak and that tweak, I tried every type of tweak, I couldn't shake off my addiction to tweaking. Then came the the new hardware, I thought if I could just get a bigger GPU, CPU, more RAM, a bigger powersupply, water cooling that I would be able to control my urges...but I just needed to get more of that deadly drug "fps".  No matter what I did I could not seem to ever get enough "fps"...the supply was always limiting.

Finally after five years, I was cured of tweaking urges, and no longer needed any more "fps" - I became stable..but now recently new stuff has hit the market, this stuff has been given all sorts of nick names, like it somehow controls the very earth upon which we live...like "terrain", and "landclass" and "texture" and its unbelievable what this does to you.  I mean this stuff will cause you to completely loose your mind, say the damnedest things, cause you to loose a complete sense of reality, cause you to see things in distorted ways, cause you to argue with some of your best friends and buddies and argue with people you don't even know as if they are the problem when in fact it's just the new stuff that hit the market.  I sure hope someone finds a cure for this stuff because there is a real world out there just waiting to be discovered.

Damn addictions anyway, they sure cause a lot distress among folks.

Cheers, Bryan
