LOL I do hope you know most of what I post here is tongue-in-cheek and not to be taken too seriously. (Although I DO believe some people have way too many addons! )

Can't argue with you there.  Actually, I have to confess it's a bit of a sensitive topic for me right now - I built a new system and started re-installing in late January, and I'm still not done.  And I'm trying to be restrained - sticking with an only-the-best policy, and trying to keep things simple.  But man, there's still a lot of stuff in there.

So apologies if I over-reacted - blame it on Post-Traumatic Re-Install Syndrome...

Right..and the rest of us feel reassured by your "I don;t care" thingi. Sheesh!

I didn't say much earlier.. but I spent some thoughts on this, cause I didn't get the full impact of this earlier.

This issue seems to be a bigger issue of who manages and controls FSX. Orbx would have to provide a reasonable out to clean out and remove their installs. There is no way out of this. It is in the interest of all the flight sim community we request/demand Orbx do this for us.

I find it offensive and totally dissappoint with the large section of the fsim community how they are willing to throw FSX over to Orbx and hand it over to them..because they think Orbx scenrieris are cool.

On the other hand if Orbx did this unintentionally or it was just an honest mistake or Nick was plain wrong in his assertions, then All this discussion is moot. But Orbx has an obligation to clear this up.

When I renovated my kitchen last year, I didn't tell the contractor, "Hey, whatever you do, I want to be able to revert to my present day outdated kitchen in case I decide I don't like my granite countertops, new cabinets, tile flooring and gas range." I'm sure they would have happily given me the tattered cabinets and linoleum flooring scraps to hang onto for safe keeping. Heck they may have even offered to come in and reverse all of the work free of charge. Still, I thought, "You know, I think I might like to keep this new kitchen!"

FSX looks like a new sim with FTXG installed. Why on Earth I would choose to get rid of it is beyond me.

On a sidenote (or two):

Great patience by AVSIM admins to withhold the 'risk of closure' flag.

And quite some self-discipline by the contributors ("us"): It's an emotional debate but it hasn't gotten out of hand (yet  :P  ).

That's a bit of a straw-man argument.  What people are concerned about is not the ability to revert to GEX (well, some of them probably are - it's always good to have an escape plan) but rather the unforeseen impact that FTXG might have down the road on some current or future add-on, as a result of its modification of core FSX files.  I have no idea if that's a realistic concern or not, but I think it's where a lot of users are coming from.

The problem is not getting back the tattered cabinets - it's all about your fridge not working anymore!   :P

2. Full uninstaller

We will ship FTXG with a full uninstaller app, which will be documented in the user guide. Just run it to revert your FSX to whatever state it was in before you installed FTXG, although if you made any manual changes to your sim setup this may not alway work 100% correctly. However we assume people will run the uninstaller pretty soon after installing if they truly don't want FTXG on their system, in which case it will work quite well.

It didn't ship with an uninstaller. It doesn't display much confidence in its functionality - "However we assume people will run the uninstaller pretty soon after installing if they truly don't want FTXG on their system, in which case it will work quite well. "

If you ever get to a point where your thinking it would be a serious project to reinstall your FSX and remake your custom configs than it probably way past time you should invest in a cheap HDD to backup said FSX.

I mean seriously who thinks that there computer is never going to fail or run afoul of something is delusional. Not a matter of if but a matter of when....

Yes, of course.  And keeping a "virgin" FSX install is also a good idea, so that you can get at original files if you need to.  But even if you take all those steps, there are still plenty of add-ons that demand that you run the installer, track down the product code, etc.  So it can still be a bit of a process.

So let's say I give up something else and annoy my wife and spend a bunch of money on a terrain enhancement. When I do all my flying in the desert southwest and over the Grand Canyon, and suddenly I find the Grand Canyon is GREEN, I might be a little upset.

So I contact the developer.

"We'll fix that some time in the future with new land class stuff."

Ok, but that's not going to help me now. I'd like to uninstall the add-on until we get the rest of the package.

"We'll provide you with an uninstaller some time in the future."

Um...

Um...

About this time I'd be contacting my credit card company. ORBX would be getting their payment "some time in the future."

Well that's just typical.. "I want my fixes NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW!"

Or there's also the option of getting landclass like scenerytech for less than 20 bucks which helps a lot and covers the entirety of North America.

I don't think it's impatient to want to uninstall a piece of software if it is not performing adequately.  If you used the freeware Norway scenery and it was subsequently broken by FTXG, what is wrong with wanting to uninstall FTXG right away?  That's not impatient, it is removing an non-contributory product.

Most people FSX installs are complex systems with various inter-related components and if one comes along and changes some core components, there is no telling what problems may arise in the future.  After all, we have all spent alot of time and money refining and cultivating our sim environments.  If someone wants the software gone, then they should have the ability to remove it right away.

I too thought it was odd that it didn't come with an uninstaller, when I saw that DX-10 wasn't working(despite it being touted as DX-10 compatible) I wanted to remove it immediately as well.

You're right about the little changes inside FSX that can cause problems.. I have definitely run into that many a time, lol. And OrbX certainly should have included an uninstaller from the get go, no excuse for that in my opinion.

Well that's just typical.. "I want my fixes NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW!"

First of all molleh, I have a lot of respect for you and your posts.

But I'm not doing what you described. I might be willing to wait for the new land classes in hopes that it would be a great improvement. But I'd prefer to be able to remove the product until such is available... without resorting to a full reinstall of FSX.

The uninstaller should have shipped with the product.

I see this discussion as just another reminder to always wait a few weeks/months when a new product comes out so that you aren't prematurely dissapointed by an unfinished product.  Don't know anything about Orbx, FTXG, and haven't cared even a tiny bit to read the rants of NickN, but one thing I can deduce from the thousands of posts is that FTXG just isn't ready for me to purchase at the present time...no uninstaller, obvious land class errors (green Texas) and whatever else.
