Linked/highlighted words and popups: new feature?

Featured Replies

Just odd as I am not seeing any underlines words, no hover, popups etc etc.

Can anyone post a link to an exact thread here where you ARE seeing these, aside from this thread.

Nope, its plain text to me. No hover, no underline, nothing... Seriously, check your browsers for malware (or maybe its just some kind of add-on? - malware would relink it to an external site most likely) If it was server side, everyone would probably see it? Or maybe just turn up your security settings as suggested? Look in your browser extensions or add-ons and make sure nothing is there that should not be there. Can you get a screenshot of the popup perhaps?

iam using ie10 does it happen to you in other forums?

I've never noticed any Pete.  I just checked AVSIM on my smartphone and it doesn't have them underlined.  Just to confirm I ran HitmanPro, the heavy duty anti malware finder, and it came up clean on my machine.  I use Malwarebytes Anti Malware in conjunction with Microsoft Security Essentials as regulars and have never had any issues.

Still can't find any links in any of the threads doing this for me. Hover over those words, nothing, no popups etc. Is it doing the same if you view it with a different browser?

What browser are you using? Could you give it a try with IE and see what happens? I've got the problem with FireFox. If everyone is seeing this but you, it's possible you're the one with the malware.

I've seen the same effect on some other sites, but it's usually pointed to some kind of advertising.

Thank God the link to the top of the page was finally removed. Hopefully this will follow quickly.

I tried a different computer using Chrome and it also shows a few underlined words.

Using Chrome here and seeing links with FSX and T7 or 777.

Joel Murray @ CYVR (actually, somewhere about halfway between CYNJ and CZBB)

It's most definitely not malware. Here's a snippet of text taken directly from a capture of the network traffic sent from the AVSIM server; it shows how the affected keywords (such as "777") are enclosed in a bit of HTML identifying them as so-called hovercard targets. I've yet to look at this thing in detail, but most likely some associated Javascript will display the annoying pop-up window when a mouseover event occurs.

All I can say is: seriously, guys, who in his right mind thinks this is a good idea to implement on AVSIM, a site that's bursting at the seams with clutter as it is and that's even now struggling to maintain an acceptable level of performance?

Just try reading any thread on the PMDG 777 forum, for example, and experience how it's littered with dozens of these utterly superfluous popup links, making the process of scrolling down the page akin to navigating a minefield. All for the "convenience" of being told that "The Boeing 777 is a long-range wide-body twin-engine jet airliner", or that "Microsoft’s Flight Simulator X or FSX for short remains the market leading and most used Flight Simulation standalone program"?

Honestly: why?

I just went there and saw nothing like is being described?!? Nor in any other thread here at Avsim. I have seen this type of thing at another, not so major, FS site, but that's to hawk the wares in the associated store.

Using latest Firefox, with Ghostery installed.

Yep  its not malware other wise it  would be happening  in all  other  forums  that iam  in, hopefully  some one  can shed some light  to this issue

It's a new feature that (afaik) uses Java. Maybe those who don't see it don't have Java installed or have it deactivated. I agree Petja: the site (like this morning) is already heavy as it was and often struggling to load on my PC: all these links don't make it easier.

No one from Avsim staff who has a comment on this...? Do you really think that people who visit this forum don't yet know what FSX is...?

EDIT

Scrap that remark about Java: I don't even have it installed and still I see those links and popup windows...

Jeroen  if I go to my internet option  and  select my setting in security to high  it  turns off  the stupid pop up windows  but the downside of  doing this also turns of  my java scripts  which prevent certain function in the forum eg  it  removes  the tab box etc

Root Admins keeping their heads down on this one.

The World is divided into two groups. Those who say "Give me a link" and those that provide the link. WWG1WGA

It's malware, I only just rid of it last week

I can't remember the name of it, but it's a 3rd party installer linked to something

I got rid of it by going to the windows program uninstaller and looked for a small program's that I didn't install and removed them

Since then I don't have that problem

I have very clean system. Nothing is in the list of installed programs that I don't know of. Nonetheless I used system restore to bring me back in time (to before I noticed this 'feature') but it's still there... Very odd, specially since not everyone seems to have it.

I use Firefox but can't find a security option that would turn it off.
