I was told to stay FAR FAR away from the DX10 features of FSX.

You were definitely told wrong.

Then I listened to a few 'GURU' types that said SSD drives can damage performance. In this case, the guy said when he replaced his SSDs and went with a RAID configured pair of Raptor drives his FPS performance shot way up in FSX.

"a few GURU types" = "the guy said"  - so it is just one source then, confused?

I'd suggest you look at alternative sources of information and use as many sources as you have time to evaluate, not just one or two ... especially if you plan to spend $5000.

Well I tried at DX10 mode and it gave me back 4 FPS over DFW and GREATLY enhanced the smoggy look and feel.    But the FSX payware industry appears to thumb it's nose at DX10 and add-ons seem to explode and catch fire in DX10.    Case in point, the brand new shiny awesomeness that is FTX Global decided that little black boxes everywhere was better than actual 3D lights.  This issue is known to ORBX and they are working on a patch to correct the lights' alpha maps being broken.   I wonder how many more add-ons I own are going to vomit all over the screen in DX10?

this tool looks very promising for FSX in D3D10 mode.

D3D10 does offer efficiencies under heavy load so it will be interesting to see if this fixes enough anomalies to make flying at the "heavy load" airports both worthwhile from a lack of bugs and more fun due to a better frame rate.

Well when I had the SSDs the FPS was not better.   Loaded faster at start.    I tried everything for weeks to get it running like everyone else appears to run it to nothing.    It was a last ditch effort, a move of desperation.

Yeah I saw that the other day and was like, SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY.    I want that and I am waiting for ORBX to fix their lighting system on DX10.

Is this enough clouds...draw distance to the max at 4098 in DX10 over Miami, I was testing Steve's improvements.

Share?    I don't like "Bragging" videos.     Share what you did so others might benefit ( like me!!!  T_T ).   That's what this thread was started for.

Tweaking fsx could be 4 credit course at community college.

TRUTH.

Think of owning and flying FSX as an apprenticeship, it's a bit like learning magic (or should that be magik) you need a good mentor, and someone who tells you to remove your SSD's is "not" the one!

Well since they ran a big Facebook page devoted to performance and tweaking with some of the great screen caps I've ever seen and people were posting rejoicing comments about how it changed their lives... I believed them.    Of course now...  the facebook page is gone.   Damn used car salesmen...

Oh.  Maybe this a sign of a problem too.   When I am flying in the PMDG 737NG, sometimes, all the LEDs and MFDs will go dim, like a power drain, and the system and stutter JUST a tiny bit of the FPS drops about 10 FPS for less than a second then it all goes back to normal.    Anyone know what that is about?   Only does it in PMDG 737.

Share?, OK I started with this JUST for FSX... I have the 300GB version, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227770

I was not bragging but showing what you can do in DX10 WITH a balanced PC, no magic tweak and NO sceneries that will change my FSX.cfg without my knowledge (won't name any developer), we can't compare our PC cause we don't have the same component.

Get faster RAM, 1600MHz ain't enough for FSX by today's standard, (unless you need 32GB for something else) you'll be better off with the 2400MHz as showed in my other post, sorry to be the bad news carrier but FSX love fast hardware, the faster the better.

Hey, you've got the same system as mine (albeit I have a SSD and a 780, but still). Would you like my cfg?

I think its very worrying that you can spend a fortune on a new build and then not get very good performance, I am hoping to build a new pc for around $1200 next year and am wondering will it be vastly different from my current set up?

Actually, I did have two SSD drives.   I had a Samsung PRO and Mushkin.   THe Mushkin 120 did the OS and the Samsung did FSX.    Then I listened to a few 'GURU' types that said SSD drives can damage performance.    In this case, the guy said when he replaced his SSDs and went with a RAID configured pair of Raptor drives his FPS performance shot way up in FSX.    On reinstall #4 of 6 I pulled out the SSDs and reinstalled the entire OS and then FSX and saw absolutely NO difference.   Sadly... I sold both of my SSD drives.    At least I didn't lose by 10% off each drive sell.

Oh wow...

Well... >.>      Ummm....  apparently while I was asleep a bunch of PC Gnomes invaded my PC and did magic things.     Well... sort of.

I decided to look at my OC settings.     I was on a Bus of 100 with a Turbo of 46 @ 1.46 volts.    I decided to push the bus up to 125 and pull the turbo down to 38 and brought the volts down to 1.44 and rebooted.      This gave me an OC speed of 4.75ghz as opposed to 4.6ghz.  This also pushed my RAM speed up to 1666mhz over 1600mhz with 9-9-9-24 Timings.    A small jump but more temperature efficient.   I don't know if that little bit was the magic bullet or something else but I just did a flight from KHOU-Hobby Houston to El Paso International KELP with max everything and VoxATC traffic set to 50% with REX weather engine rolling in the background.

Not one stutter, not one slow down the entire flight and SweetFX decided to just start working in DX10 now.   I could not get that little sucker to fire up.     Could it be... have I .. slain the beast?   At least for that flight.    It was partly cloudy the whole way there.   100 mile draw distance on the clouds with realistic haze layering.    I forget to turn on FRAPS so I could do some screen caps to share.  T_T     I wish I could have a little more AA.    You can't turn on AA in FSX with SweetFX in DX10 mode running.    It won't start.   Sadness.   But... I'll suffer a few jaggies for better color and stutter free flight enviroment.

The big test was after landing at El Paso during my taxi in to the gate.    It was LOADED with Airliners and GA aircraft waiting to party and the FPS didn't even blink.  30 FPS solid.

My only regret is... GIVE ME BACK MY SSD DRIVES!  T_T   Stupid contradicting 159817951 forum posts.   No this is good!  NO THAT IS GOOD!   Do this!  DO THAT!   DO NOOOOTHING!  AHAHAHAHAhaahahah...    :wacko2:

(( And my apologies to alainneedle1  .    I had a lot of "helpers" give their advice in the form of LOOK AT WHAT I CAN DO without actually SHOWING how they did it.   I see a haze of red now when it looks like someone is doing that again.   And I unfortunately I need 32gigs of RAM for my photography work in Photoshop so the best I can run is 1866mhz. ))

No need for apologies, we have all been there.

I did not pay enough attention to your mobo, indeed the best you can do is 1866MHz (a little more with some overclocking), I was assuming without looking, my mistake.

Just make sure that your system is stable after any changes you make in the bios,...good luck.

Oh, anyone running PMDG.   If you can, I want a comparison.     Take off from KDAL at 5pm with just Fair Weather running and tell me what you are getting.   I am curious to see what others are getting in the DFW area.

I did cut the crap.   I actually added one tweak at a time and went and tested it.   I have an EXCEL spreadsheet with every test on it, what I added and what the results were.    I could not get past 72 FPS in the normal MS Boeing 737 so I decided to clamp it all down to 30 FPS then PMDG came through with it's wrecking ball.

I don't have many add-ons added at the moment;  I just have REX, ORBX FTX Global and PMDG.

I feel you with Rex, FTX global, and my traffic 2013 at FSDT KLAX with sliders set pretty high in the default CRJ700 I get 50-60 fps in the NGX or Aerosoft Airbus X I get in the low 20's. No doubt these planes eat FPS for lunch.

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.     Did my second test flight from El Paso BACK to KDAL.  Smooth as glass with sandy weather and partly cloudy.   FIXED.  *FLEX*  LIKE A BOSS.

Thanks for sharing your story in this very entertaining way!

I've lost the count of how many times I've found myself spending more time tweaking and tuning FSX rather than flying throughout the years so although it's very interesting to read these kind of stories I'm a little bit worried at the same time I'll get stuck in the tweaking wheel again "just to try that one little thing..." but I'll take my chances ;-)

This "one thing" I would like to try after reading about your adventures is to go back using an external FPS limiter since I haven't been using one for a very long time so just wanted to know which one you're currently using since I remember there are a couple of different ones?

The Java Based GUI one from Vento.     I don't have any of the VSYNC fixes turned on in my Tweak file.   I just have Nvidia Inspector set to Standard - 1/2 Refresh on the VSYNC section.    I am also not running with any AA on in Inspector or FSX.   I am letting SweetFX handle AA using SMAA mode for DX10.      Did a long flight from KDAL-Love Field to KSTL-St. Louis International, 100 Mile draw distance.   There were billowing thunderstorms being generated by REX off to the west and northwest.   With St. Elmo's Fire textures turned on for Lightning from REX it was EPIC looking.  The first time I've been able to see REX go all out on cloudgen.    FPS never flinched the entire flight.    *flexes*   This thread helped keep me motivated to keep prying under the hood of this monster simulation to finally find a solution that seems to work for my setup.    I have never seen a piece of software be so specific PC based before.  It's madness!     That was 3 months of tweaks, installs, unisntalls, SELLING of SSD drives that was dumb and many hours of CURSING and flipping off YouTube videos.  XD
