odourboyDo you have FTX Global installed in your system?

Yes - but I've avoided any conflicts so far by deactivating any commonly named BGL files from FTXG. I do have the Orbx libs installed (if that matters). Your scenery, including the items you recommended be installed in /Global, have actually been put at the top of my scenery library - that has worked fine for me in all previous versions of your scenery.

I guess Darkstar's similar experience suggests a problem with the scenery files rather than the install?

OK guys.I solved the problem .

Download this file

http://mohsenfff.dl.rapidpars.com/4780/2568431/u6906gq0heq/Lights.rar

Delete everything in the scenery folder except "toronto_night.bgl" and copy the contains of the new rar file to the folder.

let me know if it works.

And if you experiencing frame rate hit, reduce scenery complexity to normal or lower.

Thanks mohsenfff I can't wait to try it out but won't be able too until the morning (I'm on trusty GMT). Once I've given it a good test ill get back to you.

Thank you.I appreciate it

And I made a  short video to demonstrate how it looks like at altitude 8000 ft and lower.

As always, I'm waiting to hear your comments. And I want to know whether if it's a good idea to make the same night texture and lightning for whole the US and UK or not?

Hi mohsenfff,

Sorry for the delay in feedback, still trying to troubleshoot the issue I'm having with 3D lighting - please stay tuned. I can say that the FPS is significantly improved - still a bit hungry, but much better than before and quite usable now - low 20s in the worst case. I haven't tested the performance versus Scenery Complexity, my remark is based on the setting I normally use: very dense.

Hi mohsenfff,

I downloaded the new file this morning and loaded it just to make sure it all works fine. I have waited until this evening, mainly for it to go dark here in the UK so I could ensure I tested it in the best circumstances.

My findings are similar to odourboy’s and I also use very dense.

By including a couple of BGL files from the first Toronto Night scenery I'm getting some 3D lights in my scenery but I don't know if I'm seeing everything I should. I'll just post some pics for comparison.

First, (a repeat) is the photo I took recently over Toronto

Second, Toronto scenery (original). I'll call it version1.

Third, Toronto scenery (latest). I'll call it version 2.

I'm not even going to bother with either default FSX or FTXG as they don't hold a candle to this.

I see fewer 3D lights in the second version which I presume is, in part, to help improve the the overall performance. I like the lights, but I also like the performance, so this seems like a reasonable tradeoff. I also see there's been numerous tweaks to the scenery lighting - most obvious to me is the highway illumination (also some tweaks to the neighbourhoods). Overall, a nice improvement.

Am I seeing everything I should mohsenfff and do you want to make any more changes before some specific feedback & suggestions?

I do love the picture of your real flight it does bring back some happy memories. I remember coming back from a rather long trip and was arriving back to the UK at stoopid o'clock in the morning. I cant remember exactly, but the airport doesn't open for landings until 5am. I remember on one occasion, the pilots timed it to perfection. we were descending for landing and the wheels touched the tarmac when my watch showed 5am. On another occasion, we were flying over London, circling ready to goto Heathrow. I was just gorping out the window and forgot to get my phone out. I'd been on the trip many times and thought their would be another opportunity. But I either couldn't get a window seat or the weather was so bad I didn't have another opportunity.

Back to the lights...

I still prefer version 1 of the files as it gives what I feel is the right look and is closest to your real life shot. Just my opinion. Version 2 is better on frames so its swings and roundabouts. Either way, the lights rock.

No that file is still there. I just reviewed everything one more time (all the .rar files in order and your instructions and what I ended up with in my scenery files). It all looks like I think it should but I can see that we're out of step somehow. You're screen shots look much better so I'm obviously missing something. I hate to say it, but this is getting me frustrated and not having the scenery coming up right doesn't allow me to provide you with a good detailed critique, so I'll give you some general feedback:

Toronto looks amazing - really looks like you're flying into a big North American city at night. All the things that bug me about FSX default, FTXG & UTX/GEX are presented so well with your scenery. Keep this up - you've really got something here!

How it would be even better (my opinion):

1) You've pretty well nailed the night colours of a North American city. The highways are perhaps a bit bright and the neighbourhoods in between the highways, a too dark. More balance between them would improve the overall appearance - I would like to see the smaller city streets and houses/buildings both a little brighter (roads maybe not so yellow in hue).

2) The yellow grids which appear in areas I know to be mostly parking lots (primarily of large shopping malls - which are predominant in North American suburbs, not sure if that's generally true in the UK) are a bit bright and would look better if splashed with bright white (parking lot lighting is usually quite bright). The high-rises you've placed amongst these are actually out of place - malls are low rise buildings. Put the high-rises outside the grids as high-rise apartment buildings often get built around large malls.

3) A portion of your Toronto area (generally stuff well to the north of the city and to the west and south of the lake) is pretty rural. The solid orange treatment of those roads looks out of place and ideally, should just be very light yellow/white dashed lines (presenting pools of light from streetlights on otherwise pretty empty secondary roads). I don't know if how automated your processing is or if you can basically draw a perimeter around the outside of the suburbs to get a more rural feel to the roads, but that would be an improvement. You seemed to accomplish that better in your Bristol scenery. The transition between the suburban sections and the rural into the FTX Global areas outside your scenery seems smoother.

4) Particular to the Bristol scenery - the reddish and pinkish roadways look really odd to me. I don't know if there's road lighting used in the UK that looks like that, but I don't think you'd ever see that colour in North America.

No point in commenting on the 3D Lights since I don't seem to be displaying the right ones at the moment. :-(

BTW, the nuclear power plant you placed west of downtown Toronto (in the city of Burlington actually), gave me a chuckle. I applaud your effort, but just so you know, that style of plant (breeder reactor?) does not exist at all in Canada. If you're curious what a Canadian nuclear plant looks like, go here in google maps or Earth: 43.809586,-79.066095

As I said, the comments are just my opinion. Take, modify or ignore as you see fit. Regardless, it's a massive step up from what I've got today. If you decide to tackle the USA (and I hope you do - that's where I do 90% of my simming), there are vast tracts of sparsely or unpopulated land. It might make sense to develop a technique for a smooth transition into default scenery and stick to modelling the more populated areas so you can keep the total size of your scenery under control.

Cheers!

Thank you so much odourboy

I think you were mange to read my last post before it got all y . Sorry for that, I couldn't edit the post.
You made very good and smart points. The reason for putting Autogen out of places was due to the time limit I had to make it quick and my main focus was on the textures and lightning, if I'm going to make it commercial, I will definitely pay more attention to these details. I even wanted to use Google 3d models for high-rises.
And about highway, you are right it is too bright.

I did put some white light between the yellow grid lines, but I suppose I have to add more.5l0u34.jpg
And yes I did't uses the reddish and pinkish road in Toronto. That was awkward.
modeling the more populated area was very very good suggestion, there is no need to develop a technique for smooth transition, I can simply use a blend mask for that. however, the idea to stick to the populated area to save time and space was great.
So let me review again:
1-adjust highway brightness to keep a balance between main roads and street
2-using brighter "white'" lightning instead of "yellow" for mall and parking lot.
3-using yellow/white color for urban area instead of bright orange.
4-smooth transition between suburban and urban area and default texture. That was very good idea why I should make a night texture for an area that is not populated?
So that's all? I mean are you sure that's all I need to make my scenery more realistic?
After UK, I'll definitely work on US. For now let stick to a smaller area to see where we'll go with this project.
However, I don't know which market worth to put my time and energy into it.
once again thank you so much for your detailed information .

Overall, I agree with the synopsis of changes that have so far been discussed.

I don't know of any pink roads in the UK. The lighting technology generally matches what is used in the USA. The only real difference, is that everything of course, is on a much smaller scale. The very bright white spotlight type lights I see in your screenshots dotted around are also realistic as here in the UK their are many places that these lights are used. I have to admit, I have not seen them in your scenery in DX9 or 10 so something isn't quite loaded right for me either.

My only other observation, and I don't know if its possible, would be to make the pools of light on the road surface itself appear more distinctive. This light pooling with light and shadow is evident in the RL photo that odourboy posted above. In large city centres and even in large retail parks, their is also a sprinkling of colour from large neon signs but this is something that could be added later. Then of course their are traffic lights... But lets concentrate on simply getting the overall look and feel as close to reality as it can get. All these other things can be added later, If needed at all. It's more important to make the lights fully DX10 compatible before adding nice to haves.

They are very good points. I 'll take them into the consideration.

Before going to make this for all UK and as odourboy mentioned,"just for populated area" I'm gathering all your suggestions, I think I received 10 or more advice from you guys, which can be very helpful. And can save me a lot of time in the future.

So if there more, please don't hesitate,

Thank you so much

Looks great and more realistic than FTX Global or UTX.  Please make for the whole United States.

I have been waiting for something like this being as I use only use photo scenery.
