I apologize, I didn't get it. However, your refernece was on page one or two, so it wasn't that obvious I guess.

This misunderstanding proves what I wrote earlier in this thread: The written text without seeing or hearing the person you're having a "conversation" with, it is sometimes hard to tell the difference between a serious comment and a sarcastic or humorous one.

I have only been here for a little over a year (and this isn't my main forum because I really just got more interested in FSX lately again). Really enjoying all the improvements and the community overall, great bunch of folks if you ask me. Just don't let the occasional negative nancy get to you, sometimes we all post negative stuff out of frustration (I did it the other day, but later apologized).

 

This forum is very mild compared to some - try math forums, computers, networking, audio/video. Those places are much nastier in general, and this is actually a breath of fresh air compared to some forums.

 

Anyhow, just my -2 pesos.

"Being popular" doesn't mean "following the crowd." It often means "leading the crowd."

 

The reputation system is a powerful tool for keeping the forums civil. It's also a powerful tool for learning what you can and cannot do. If you get downgraded consistently, study your posts and posts that have been upgraded a lot to see how they are different and how you may have expressed yourself better. It's not a perfect system, but it beats confrontational followup posts.

I notice there can be the occasional passive aggressive attitude in some posts. Sometimes, some comments can come across as a challenge, but due to the forum rules, such challenges cannot be answered without bringing the hammer on yourself. It's a bit hard to describe. While there is the old tenet of text lacking the subtlety and nuance of face to face communication, I'm sure many who have been involved in online forums since their inception (and news groups, mailing lists, BBS fora, etc.) can agree that you learn to see patterns that when studied over time, can reveal almost as much about about the attitude and intent behind these otherwise sterile figures on the screen as a facial tick or glint in the eye.

 

For example, how many of these archetypes have you seen here?

 

The bloated pontificator. This person really thinks highly of himself, and rarely will his or her posts be less than one or two paragraphs. Every post is not so much a sharing of information, but a decree.

 

The wishy-washy ADD sufferer. This person LOVES FSX the best of all. Next week, X-Plane is the best sim ever. On Thursday, it's Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. that rules the roost. Sometimes it's cyclic. All the time, it's erratic.

 

The "I'm a real pilot, so I should know." Now, all due respect to real pilots out there, but there's one breed of poster among your ranks that seldom forgets to mention his credentials, and how they make him absolutely correct in everything he says.

 

The "I fly sims, so I am qualified to tell you you're wrong." This one is good at going after real pilots. Not seen as often on this forum, they usually lie in wait to offer their unsolicited advice to YouTube video posters. On the few times they go after the above category of real pilots, the ensuing furball can be amusing.

 

The fragile snowflake. This one can be especially annoying. Anything stated that is not exactly within the very narrow confines of his worldview are viewed as a personal attack. Whether it's a criticism against his pet sim, or a preference that's not his own in the ubiquitous Airbus vs. Boeing debate, this one can easily get torn to pieces, and will quickly resort to reporting posts that happen to contain something he has even the slightest disagreement with.

 

I know I'm basically aping the Forum Warriors thing, but flight sim forums have a few unique characters.

 

And regarding other, less civil forums, there is one I frequent that revolves around PC gaming that is pretty lax moderation. They'll cull anything obviously illegal or pornographic, but other than that, pretty much anything goes. Surprisingly, it's all but self-policing. When someone says something really uncalled for, it's rather cathartic to be able to craft a biting flame in response that would make a sailor blush, and thoroughly put the offender in their place. I've also learned from that forum that no one can wield the power of swearing quite like the artistry and craft of a Scotsman. Not suggesting that Avsim should adopt a lax behavioral standard, but some communities are more amenable to that kind of thing than others.

That would be me, and not just in the simulator world. One week I reallly like something and love posting and reading about it, a week later after either being tired of bugs or just getting bored I move onto being a fan of something else. Short attention span, I don't know :-)

Also, I find this amusing. I often watch Youtube videos on aviation and flight simulation, and there is already somebody in the comments who will sit and simply pick out mistakes. On simulation videos it's not so bad, but on real aviation videos, it gets annoying fast. e.g. You see posts from simulator pilots to real pilots saying things like "You should have clicked that 2 seconds before that and held it for 2 seconds"
