November 25, 201312 yr Hi, Can anyone recommend to install P3D on Windows 8.1 or should I/we stick with Windows 7? November 25, 201312 yr Right now, I'm thinking of going back to 7! the dissapearing joystick thats troubled me since 8 is killing this and fsx for me. other than that i think 8.1 is a better O/S.. but if the controllers keep disapearing it's useless as an OS.
November 25, 201312 yr It works perfectly on 8.1. edit: I haven't had time to test the joystick thing yet though...
November 25, 201312 yr The specs say W7 as the preferred OS. FS2020 Alienware Aurora R11 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10700F - Windows 11 Home 32GB Ram NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super OC 16GB - Pimax Crystal Light VR
November 25, 201312 yr In 8.1 it seems to be even more prone to lose the controllers than FSX. Not tried FSUIPC yet. Regards Howard H D Isaacs

Report this to LM. I'm sure a fix will come. FS2020 Alienware Aurora R11 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10700F - Windows 11 Home 32GB Ram NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super OC 16GB - Pimax Crystal Light VR
November 25, 201312 yr The joystick bug is still there in Windows 8.1. Though it does happen more randomly (I still need more time to test). LM is the only one which can pressure MS to release a joystick fix imho. I was under the impression that joystick would be using some api's from DX11 and hence the joystick woes could have disappeared. Acquiring new Windows 7 licenses is now more challenging and more expensive. November 25, 201312 yr Re: the disappearing joystick. This is a new one for me. Never had it happen on FSX with Windows 8, but it seems fairly common in P3D on WIndows 8.1.. Hopefully it'll get sorted by someone.
November 25, 201312 yr Acquiring new Windows 7 licenses is now more challenging and more expensive. I'm not sure how you've arrived at this conclusion, but if you live in the U.S. it is simply incorrect. Newegg.com (and MicroCenter) stock Windows 7 still and it costs the same or in some cases less than Windows 8. If you want the media center function it will cost *more* to buy Windows 8 than Windows 7, since it is a separate application in Windows 8 but is included in Windows 7 (Home Premium or better).

Yes, you are correct here. I was basing this on MS's Windows Lifecycle Fact Sheet which does state different dates for oem's, retail etc. How I Evaluate Third Party Sim Addon Developers Refined P3Dv5.0 HF2 Settings Part1 (has MaddogX) and older thread Part 2 (has PMDG 747)
November 25, 201312 yr Author Thanks all for the advices About disconnecting joysticks in Windows 8.1... Recently I added an extra Windows 8.1 partition for games (On the same PC I have also 2 Windows 7 partitions for FS9 and FSX, incl several controllers, like yoke etc) When running Windows 8.1, I frequently get the USB-device disconnect tone/tune, about every few seconds. Now I realize this may be the 'joystick' bug... So I might stick to Win7 on this one. Nevertheless as far as I know, DirectX 11 is different on Win7 then it is on Win8.1. Is this correct? November 25, 201312 yr Moderator Microsoft have made it clear that DX11 updates will only be available for Win 8.x from now on. Win7 users will be "stuck" at DX11.1 forever... Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
November 25, 201312 yr LM is the only one which can pressure MS to release a joystick fix imho. Microsoft isn't going to do squat, LM will fix this issue as they are in control of the code. MS at this point doesn't know their head from a hole in the ground. Instead of building up their server/programming tools/business market their chasing the home market Apple and Smart Phones own. Doing this to their own peril (I was shocked to see Metro on Window Server). I know I'm rambling but Microsoft needs to get a new CEO and get their heads out of the clouds (Pun intended)... I'm thankful we don't have to ask MS for anything FS related at this point. Hopefully in the future long past Ballmer will they have a return. Dillon, the "joystick problem" is in Win8/8.1, which obviously is not in any code that L-M have! Fr. November 26, 201312 yr I bet this ends up with MS blaming the vendor, the vendor blaming MS and the developer standing there with his arms crossed tapping his foot waiting for someone to accept responsibility.
