November 28, 201312 yr First, let me apologize, because I'm sure that this has been asked and answered, but I can't find it. And I know that all comparisons are imprecise. I currently have an i7 2600k. How much of a frame rate boost would I see in FSX by upgrading to a 4770 or 4820? I realize that no one can answer that with any precision, but I would just like to have a "feel" for what I might expect to see. I am currently running a GTX 570 as my video card, if that makes any difference. Thanks! - Bill Magann
November 28, 201312 yr Moderator What are you running your 2600K at now as far as clock speed? Even though the newest CPU's may be faster on paper clock vc clock, and maybe you might get a 10 to 15% improvement, that would only equate to maybe 3 to 5 FPS more than you already get now. Plus the added cost of the new CPU and/or mobo if a new mobo is needed. Probably not really worth it imho. But of course that depends on what type of performance your already getting. In my case, after 4 years running FSX on a C2D E8400 at 3.85ghz and 2GB of 1066 RAM, my upgrade I did in July to a 2700K and 8GB of 2133mhz of RAM was a huge difference, and I haven't even overclocked my 2700K yet and almost feel like I dont even need to since my FPS are usually around 30 or higher running my PMDG birds. Those older 2600K chips are still pretty good at running FSX if you have it clocked right and have FSX and your OS setup properly and tweaked. Personally in your case its probably not worth the cost and hassel to do it. Although if you plan on moving to P3D then you'll probably want to get a better GPU since it takes better advantage of the GPU unlike FSX. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
November 28, 201312 yr in my experience with overclocking it's a nearly linear relationship. increase your cpu speed by 20%, frames will probably go up around 20% cheers -andy crosby

November 28, 201312 yr Author Thank you for your replies! I am running at 4.5Ghz. So does that mean that if the new processor is also running at 4.5 I would see only minimal improvement? - Bill Magann
November 28, 201312 yr You will see a little more improvement because all the various parts of the cpu are faster, but don't expect much fps gain. What you will see instead is a much smoother experience rather than miraculous frames.
November 28, 201312 yr The 2600k (and 2700k) chips can overclock extremely well, with (going out on a limb here) 4.9 gig available on all of them with some decent liquid cooling. There are three (which I clocked) in fsx use by forum members here that currently run at 5-gig (H100i), plus my own at 5 (EK waterblock) for a year or more. Using DX10 and a big gpu helps, to, but the noticeable increase is the ability to hold a solid, high frame rate that doesn't fluctuate too much. One can always find places and combinations in the FSX world which will pull down frame rates, but you just get less of them. With the addition of a very strong GPU (and DX10) - comes a corresponding increase in the ability to tolerate those places or combinations. i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.

If you are stuck at 10fps in some situations an optimistic 10% gain will only net you 1 extra fps for whopping11fps. Not a very substantial upgrade is it. :( FSX really needs a 8GHz speed cpu. Most are looking at Prep3D and DX10 FSX or Xplane 10 for better performance.
November 28, 201312 yr Author Thanks for all the very informative replies! I get pretty good frame rates almost everywhere with FSX, but my video card was an obvious limiter for P3D and some other programs. I wanted to see if buying a whole new system with an upgraded CPU was worth the cost right now. I decided to just go and order a 780ti 3Gb card. That is still only a about 1/3 the cost of a whole new system, and I should be happy. Again, thanks! I have owned every simulator since FS2, (anybody else remember Sid Meier's Solo Flight?) but I have been away from Avsim for a long time. It's good to feel "active" in the community again. - Bill Magann
November 28, 201312 yr i think you made a wise choice, with a 3 monitor setup the improved videocard will probably help a lot more than a cpu upgrade would, plus it will scale for p3d if you go down that path. you might find a nice cheap upgrade adding a few more megs of ram to your system i never tried sid meier's solo flight but sid meier's railroads is my most played app other than flight sim loll cheers and happy thanksgiving! -andy crosby

Clock speed is just one way to improve performance. There's IPC, as well as increased parallelism. For me DX10 and FSX is very smooth and stable. I don't have any issues, and I get really good framerates. I did actually notice that in Prepar3D 2.0 when I tried it out, the first core, much like FSX, was running at 100%, while the rest were not. November 29, 201312 yr Guys!!!!!!!! We Stay need to see what we get from the VERSION 2 OF PREPARE 3D.
November 29, 201312 yr I recently went from an I7-960 to a 4770k, gpu from a 580gtx to a 780gtx and where I used to get choked in some places things are good now. For me, worth the money. Dave
