Only PMDG may build the new ATR-72-600

Hello PMDG Staff and all PMDG Family,

 

I have al most all aircrafts from PMDG and for that reason i am part of the PMDG family, i dont know if is the right place to post this one if not sorry for that.

 

Flight1 have the ATR-72-500 initialy build for FS9 and then update for FSX, many bugs with this aircraft runing FSX with W7 64bits and problems to with FS9, whoever is fantastic aircraft but....not build by PMDG :)

 

I wondred if with the new ATR-72-600, where the cockpit is completely diferent and many things the PMDG like to think about develope this fantastic aircraft :)

 

Anyway congratulations to PMDG for the excelent work and let us join the excelent aircrafts.

I used to see the ATR's back in DFW and SJU when I used to fly on American. I flew on 1 ATR-72 from SJU many years ago. I love the turboprob as a FS aircraft to fly and it makes me sad that they are not used widely in the real aviation world as much.

 

The Majestic Q400 is a phenomenal product with the JS41 being a great one as well. Since there is a good Dash-8, a Saab 340 would be awesome for someone to make, but I doubt many more props will be modeled.

I doubt it.  It's not quite an aircraft that you see all over the world at your local airports, which has been their aim recently.  To be honest, I don't think I've ever seen an ATR in person in my life.

 

Depends from where you live, in Northern Europe one can definitely see more ATR's than Dash 8's around. Here in Finland most of our domestic traffic is handled by them... 

 

Also to me it seems like they are rather popular in a lot of Asian & South American countries too. 

 

Anyway PMDG already made JS41 which is extremely rare almost everywhere compared to ATR, thus I can't see why an ATR wouldn't be popular enough to be profitable. I think despite the modernized cockpit in -600 the different ATR models still share quite common systems so making multiple models shouldn't be too difficult.

It was made as a test project for the NGX, and it was probably chosen as a test project because Robert flew them for a while when he was with ACA.

 

As such, it really didn't have to fit the popularity metric, which was something they started after the MD-11 (which was around when the JS41 was released).

An impressive list, to be sure, but you'll note that a ton of those operators are pretty obscure...

That list looks rather outdated, Finnair hasn't operated an ATR since early 2000's I think, nowadays they are operated by FlyBe Nordic which is missing from the list

 

Also it seems to miss many other ATR operators such as Bangkok Airways, Aerocaribbean...

That explains it then, I didn't know it was a test project to prepare for the NGX...

Well with all models combined over 1000 ATR's have been built which makes it almost as popular as Dash 8 series. 

 

As far as I know no other modern turboprop comes even close ATR/Dash 8 in numbers produced and flying today. 

 

Because Majestic has already made theDash 8-Q400 I think ATR would definitely be the next choice of turboprop aircraft for any major developer. 

 

Looking at this list even many of the oldest ATR's still seem to be active, it seems to be missing a couple of aircraft though as in reality ATR delivered its 1000th aircraft in 2012.

You are letting your local experience translate into global expectance again, Kyle. ATR is pretty popular worldwide. Especially now as there is basically no other contender in 40-50 seats market.

There is only limited success in North America, but they are pretty popular in Europe. And Russia. And India. And the Pacific Islands. And the Carribean. And also Africa, lately.

Regardless, it was before they set up the current factors for development ("something you see at your local airport," etc).

Sure, but I only know what I know, and if we're looking at the "buy at your local airport" idea, I don't see it.  Granted, I'd probably still buy it because I know they're popular in the Carribbean (EGF banished them, to a certain degree, there after a few icing incidents), among other select areas.

 

...but again, looking at that list of operators, I really don't see many mainstream operators.  I see that there are some Nordic operators, some greater EU operators, and then a whole bunch of random island countries.  Translate that to the purchasing idea mentioned above (your local airport), and I don't think that'll cover what you want to cover.  So, in America, you'd probably pick up a few people in the Carolinas (Mountain Air), Idaho (Empire), and Hawaii (Island Air).  Cape Air has two out in Guam, which has a population of half the daily, one-way subway ridership where I live.  The Dash, on the other hand, is all over this country.

 

I'm sure it would be a hit in Europe, which would be another economic draw in purchases, but the rest of the operators (save a few in Aus) seem to be so obscure, that you'd be lucky to see a sale there.

 

So, sure, I may be giving in to my typically American world view ("the world is, or should be like us" * ), but I just don't see the worldwide popularity that people are claiming.  I see EU, and a bunch of pockets.

 

* I don't subscribe to this world view, though I occasionally fall victim to it, mostly unintentionally.
