An Interesting Future for Outerra

Featured Replies

Forests look way better now compared to older screenshots. I agree with Brandon, once trees will be able to cast shadows like in Prepar3D 2.x, we'll get a photoreal result.

Terrain shadows will be added later as well.

  • Well, Outerra has had only one variety of flora (pines) for quite some time, but have little birdies seen the future?

  • I think of it this way: there are two approaches to making a sim, particularly a flight sim. One is you make the planes and the things that go with the planes, and paste a somewhat satisfactory sketch

Perhaps its better this way. Sometimes, a big company is a greedy company. Its good that thay take their time devoping Outerra, rather than pushing incomplete and unstable features out, so they get more buyers.

Well, they say: "Its money that makes the world go around" don't they?

And I think its proven by a lot of professional companies in the business that most companies have a strong interest to produce good producs rather than looking at quick profit on short sight.

If the pace of development stays the same I am afriad that it will take another ten years untill we see this to become a reasonable usefull simulator. [Yes, I know that Outerra is not a Simulator but a Rendering engine ...]

What a pity!

Outerra really is something new....... Cameni writes:

These screens are actually from academic project that's going to show and compare the current and predicted future forest coverage and distribution of tree species in north-western USA. Right now it's using large species maps to compute what trees grow where, but we aim to generate the coverage procedurally using rules for individual species, based on temperature and precipitation ranges. Once that's done, it will be used in OT to get variety in vegetation that also conforms to bioclimatic rules.

I guess some simpler basic rules will be used initially to bring variety into the public version soon.

The mind boggles at putting that much thought into trees........

I remember reading science fiction when I was little where the hero discovered the principles of interstellar travel, developed the necessary technology in his garage, built the ship himself (maybe with the help of a billionaire industrialist if the hero wasn't already one himself) and then proved themselves not only as a scientist, inventor and engineer without peer, but also as a two-fisted squared-jawed man of action...... (who was also irresistible to the ladies) by taking the ship out themselves for a bit of explosive adventure.

It makes me smile and wonder about Outerra, where essentially these two guys (Seaton and Crane?) are working on an immense project essentially alone it seems.

In a book, it may take a week from initial concept to final liftoff of our interstellar speedster, but in real life.......... Yeah, they probably need some help (and lots of it) to bring their project to market in anything short of a geologic time frame.

Here's hoping they get it done before we are all getting measured by the undertaker!  :P

The new trees are great but sorta of lower-resolution. The developers say its due to memory concerns....

Which underscores the importance of the promised switch to 64bit!

Its hinted that higher resolution offerings may be made available as a separate download for those who feel their systems can handle it.

what is the status of 64bit conversion ?

The last time I asked (May 19) the reply was;

Finishing the 64 bit build of our Chromium browser wrapper, other libs should be easier.

wow that is impressive. the cockpit shadows are so crisp its amazing.

it saddens me that this engine is not a full simulator by now. i wish they can release something by this year
